    Network Room Security

It's common practice where I am to install a layer of 3/4 plywood under sheetrock walls in areas where you need break/penetration resistance. No fire code violation since the combustibles are encapsulated, and a whole hell of a lot cheaper than using metal sheeting. (be sure to check local...

    Laser Printer Recommendations

I have approximately 25 of these deployed in a school environment, in a year and a half the kids have not managed to break one yet. I am planning on replacing the last 5 inkjets in the building with these at the end of the month as they have been so good to me. If you look around you can find...

What are they looking for as far as "service ID?" Can I just throw on an EMS shirt from work or do they want some kind of ID badge (the one I lost almost a month ago at that)

    dell....ordering-faster?

Ive ordered with both several times and it's gone both ways. One big thing to concider is if they were backordered on a single part and had to wait for a shippment. I had to wait for parts to come into stock on the last 2 systems i ordered, which delayed each about a week.

    Rack mount system

You can get systems that meet or exeed those specs from dell in the form of 1U boxes in your price range. I think the poweredge sc1425 is going for like 950 at the moment with a 2.8ghz xeon, 80gb drive and a gig of ram. The Poweredge 850 will get you a 2.8ghz celron with 512mb ram and an 80gb...

And the plot gets thicker I was looking at the order page, and realized that the Bluetooth is now packaged with the Intel wireless card, meaning the exact computer I ordered 2 days ago was now 49$ cheaper. Just canceled the order and re-order to the exact same specs except I dropped from...

    How To: 25 duron cpu's

As to the power side of things, it will be impossible to run a 25 duron cluster on one circuit. Last time I looked a high end duron processor used about 60W. Add in power usage requirements for motherboard, ram, cooling fans, network interfaces etc, and that number will climb fast. Even using a...

Return items to newegg or sell on ebay?

Whatever you decide to do you should figure it out quickly. As I recall, you can only RMA items to newgg for 30 days for refund, or 7 days for CPU's. The RMA for replacemnt is much longer. All that is stated at the terms of service page when you place your order. If you ordered your parts "about...

Help, cuz the computer likes to warm up

If the BIOS battery was that bad you'd have a message saying that all your settings were reset to defaults. How does the system look? No pop'd caps on the mainbord etc? Have you tried re-seating components inside the case etc?

    Shutting down computers every night

I remeber a few articles similar to that. I belive what it came down to is that you will see virtually no decrease in service life turning on/off once a day over the usefull span of the system. Where it did come into play was in situations where people were turnign on and off the computer many...

How many of you use your electronics as a means for heating a room.

I did not close the window in my dorm room a single day i lived there last year (in MA).. I had my dual operon running, a 1200mhz duron, a dual pIII 733, and a 4ch amp in my 19" rack, as well as a 17" trinitoron (that gets really hot) and a 19" viewsonic, all on 2 smart ups 1000's.

What standard hardware today is just totally not utilized?

Well, usb was released, followed by firewire which was faster.. followed by usb2 which was beaten out by the latest round of firewire. I think the big factor there is cost, and the fact that there is no need for a 800mbps link for your mouse

Only if microsoft were smart. The only way to load drivers needed for your windows install is with a floppy unless you slipstream the drivers into your install cd. Altough, I beleive I may have used an external USB floppy once or twice.

Why are old CPUs so expensive?

In the case of those, many businesses still use them in multi-processor systems, and when one goes bad its cheaper to buy a used processor than scrap a whole system and spend time configureing a new one.

check where your cpu fan is plugged in.. Many motherbords will turn off if they do not see a RPM signal over the cpu fan plug as a safety measure.
