ZFS and NFS are entirely unrelated technologies.
One is a filesystem (a highly complex one at that), the other is a service allows one to share files over a network.
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, Windows only supports NFS on the most expensive Windows versions (Ultimate and such)...
I don't see backup being mentioned (unless you conflate it with storage redundancy? Don't do that :)).
Just to be sure, I'd like to note that shared folders are no good at all for backups. It leaves you wide-open for Cryptolocker-like problems and overenthusiastic rm commands on client machines.
I can not help you at this point, as I have no idea what is happening here.
But as an aside, just to get it to boot, you could try to set the BIOS to ignore the CPU fan, shutdown/disconnect, power the CPU fan some other way (different fan connector or wires into a molex connector), and then...
Did you check your motherboard's manual to see what the beeps mean?
Did you try to do the boot without connecting any peripherals such as the USB keyboard/mouse?
Next time I will certainly get that board instead, but I was on a budget. Aaaaand then I had to order a whole bunch of memory modules to get it running... needless to say I went far over budget.
Anyway, the problem was that the memory modules were not being recognized. This is still confusing...
They sent me the same board back, saying it worked fine.
I ordered several more modules until I found one that worked (I can look up the type number later).
The board functions properly now.
Be sure to make it a fanless system...
Anyway... I'm looking forward to see how this turns out.
Are you sure the flex seal isn't unhealthy for the turtle?
Decisions, decisions...
The priority is file restore, not system restore. The only things that would need re-installing are the office suite, PDF writer and AV. I'll try out Crashplan for myself first - a couple years ago I was not impressed, but I have forgotten why.
I'll probably present...
WHS 2011 has nice features and is quite affordable, but from reading I understand that it is difficult to back up more than 2TB of your server's contents.
Can anyone with practical experience on that weigh in?
Yes, you are correct. And that isn't much. But I was looking at the Server Essentials 2012 (E330) because I was under the impression that the extended support status does not include security fixes. Further reading shows that it does so WHS 2011 should be receiving security updates until April...
It looks good. But I would prefer to have a local backup as well, due to low external connection speed in the area.
Very informative post, brings up some good points.
This is a quite small operation actually :) As I said in my first post, it is currently just a single PC. I don't see it...
Thank you for your reply, very helpful!
What I've read so far about napp-it sounds very good, so I will try that out first.
I have decided to use the N54L with 8GB ECC Kingston ValueRAM KVR16E11/8I. The RAM is listed on http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Memory as being compatible with Gen7.
I'll...
I have family members that run a non-technical business.
They depend on one Windows PC.
Many moons ago they acquired an Acer WHS 2003 box that they are backing up to (client and server are not in the same building).
I think there are four problems:
1) The WHS box is at least five years...
Considering that you linked to a 4-bay and a 2-bay, the choice seems to depend on the amount of storage you need - something only you yourself can answer.
Synology's documentation says
http://ukdl.synology.com/ftp/ds/userguide/Synology_SSD_Cache_White_Paper.pdf
Based on that, I'm not sure...
For what it is worth, I did find someone that has the X7SPA-HF-D525 board (one extra character), who succesfully uses the exact same memory, according to the part number, KVR800D3S8S6/2G to be precise.
The memory is Kingston, which has it listed as compatible with my board, the X7SPA-H-D525.
The onboard VGA on this new SuperMicro X7SPA-H-D525 doesn't appear to be sending any signal to my monitor. The monitor works. I haven't yet been able to find other people describing this problem.
The manual has the following to say about it:
This did not help. The motherboard does not beep...
Not really the answer you are looking for, but you could give each student their own folder.
turn_in/
(world-readable, nothing else)
turn_in/studentA
( full controll for student A)
turn_in/studentB
(full controll for student B)
turn_in/...
...
For what it is worth, products like the Zalman VE400 use a hard disk as storage but can emulate an optical diskdrive. You put the ISO on the hard disk and the enclosure presents the contents of the ISO in the usual way an optical disk drive would, allowing you to boot from it. (I don't have it...
I was under the impression that it is a bad idea to use A and B as drive letters because Windows still treats those in a special way, because they used to be assigned to floppy disks.
Microsoft says
(here) so I suppose it doesn't matter anymore.
Good call, apparently it didn't really work, there were many problems. fsck didn't allow an automated run so every confirmation had to be done manually, and there were many problems. So instead of continuing that I just reformatted the partition.
Since then I've written all the intended data...
Ah thank you, I should have realized that!
I have resized the existing filesystem with the resize2fs command, all tools agree now, 2.7TB.
So I guess my confusion comes from df showing the filesystem size and all the other tools I tried showing the partition size. But gdisk lists 'Linux...
As it turns out, I was not able to write past 735G. Apparently df was the only tool reporting the correct size of the partition.
I used gpart to create a new GPT and partition, the size of the whole disk.
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
1 2048...
Ah, that command is new to me. The output is looking good!
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sdc 8:32 0 2.7T 0 disk
└─sdc1 8:33 0 2.7T 0 part /media/vol2
Thanks, gdisk gives the expected output, i.e. 2.7TiB of space in the partition, other than...
I have a new 3TB hard disk on which I am trying to create 1 partition that uses the full disk. Right now I have a confusing difference between fdisk and df output. I'm asking here because all I found that seemed relevant is one StackExchange question that recommended 'fixing it' with resize2fs...
If you 'format the drive' you will not be able to access the data that was on that drive before. Vista won't be there anymore.
What you could do if you wanted to be able to switch between the two operating systems, is attach both drives. If I understand your situation correctly, you want to boot...
It is perfectly save to remove both, other than that you lose the information inside it.
The reason that there are two of them is because of 'log rotation' or 'log rollover'; you can look that up if you are interested.
I am confused, what is there that is not OK?
The temperature seems alright, I don't know the cooling situation but the disk is under load.
This is a random program that indicates that there are 'delays' but it doesn't specify what it means when it indicates that there is a 'delay'.
I went for reliability first and bought Crucial M500s, which have some error correction features, and are able to finish their write command after power loss. I don't have a UPS, and there is a machine here that occasionally takes out the power when you switch it on.
I would NOT put those in the PSU. These fans will NOT provide enough airflow for any PSU.
They are, in my opinion, very good for providing extra airflow in a small formfactor build where noise is a consideration, for example in an external hard disk drive enclosure. I've tried to use them to...
Where I currently live, I only have wired network connectivity in the living room. I can't run wires anywhere, except via the less-than-desirable 'over the floor and under the door' method.
I don't think that is strange. I doubt going from the 3-platter version to the 4-platter version is as simple as adding some extra parts. I think some parts will have to be rearranged or replaced, for example with parts of a lesser height. I dont think it strange if that has an effect on the...
