Lag is one of those "spec numbers" enthusiasts like to keep pushing irrespective of its influence on the system as a whole. Just about everything IRL has some sort of lag to it. For example lifting a heavy rifle isn't instantaneous due to the laws of nature, which is why the mind has evolved an...
At this point the most suitable displays seem to be the CrossOver 43/49 units with IPS (less color shift), DC-backlight, and Displayport.
I have the samsung js8500 and suspect the VA colorshift combined with the glossy surface and maybe lightlight weirdness is what's causing a headache when...
They certainly had aspirations since device type includes not one but two PC/DVI labels with specific settings.
Just because it works kinda terrible as a monitor doesn't mean they didn't design for it.
The other possibility is that this TV probably has FRC for whatever 10/12 bit-ness. The white regions have this weird frosty glow appearance to them and colors that shift over time, kind of like what's described in this thread:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1675573
Seriously...
> You can minimize this effect so some degree by adjusting the white point. Try setting R-gain to +5 and G-Gain to +10. Then the center will be slightly greenish and the left/right edge will be slightly reddish. This significantly reduces the color shift effect to tolerable levels.
That does...
Overall js8500 evaluation: I didn't a chance to use it much at first, but honestly it's mediocre at best for PC use. The color shift is noticeably significant and kind of "glare-ish", the curved 9000 version might be a bit better but it's baked into the panel if you look carefully; appears like...
A fix for the seriously messed up gamma (literally headache inducing) that's compatible with f.lux is to download QuickGamma 4, set monitor gamma to ~1.6 or so (yeah it's that bad). Windows color correction calibration otherwise works but the file isn't readable by f.lux so it's effectively...
That refers to purchased profiles. Copyright doesn't apply to your own generated profiles any more than DeWalt owns houses built with their power tools or Fluke owns the numbers that show up on their multimeters..
Has anyone managed to generate a ICC file? The 8500 is completely out of whack from the factory. While the windows gamma util will fix it (move the bar all the way down), the ICC file it generates is incompatible with f.lux.
A generic ICC file which crushes gamma will probably work, but not...
Update on the js8500. Recieved today. Mostly OK, but has a poor gamma profile. default tests to like 1.7; well under 2.2. Gamma setting does all of jack squat, and nVidia gamma not that effective either so it's some nonstandard default curve. Suspect Samsung boosts/cheats to make video look...
It was the mainboard and they did it to quite a few models (it was esp douchey on the higher end ones claimed to be "full color" or whatever). TS1 revision generally had a samsung chipset board and TS2's had some cheapo one (the repair part prices were like $500 vs $300 on their own site). It...
Oftentimes, yes. Same "panel" but whatever coating/etc they can get their hands on. It's often for PC/inet cafes which understandably are less demanding. They also sometimes have several grade of products themselves including "pixel perfect".
Their prices were relatively cheap compared to...
Korean monitors use the same panels with simple straightforward electronics instead of all the TV stuff. The TV manufacturers with their volume should have this market to themselves if not for their generally incompetent product design/management.
The spec should be tighter and supposedly the bit mask is now for equalized eye (mandatory? equalized is in 1.3 spec, can't find 2.0 spec online). Regardless it doesn't matter because it's not as if they're making new type of copper wire etc to conform, just tweaking the existing process if the...
Adorama is an electronics shop in NY that sometimes sell gray market intl camera gear like many such shops, marked as non-US and provide their own warranty on it.
It has very low freq PWM @ 120hz, which is hardly ideal for a white desktop background turned to <50% brightness. For brief used it's alright but tends to cause strain for long term productive work.
The problem with most of those monitors is they're from podunk Korean companies.
The new Xiaomi 4k 49" tv (Samsung panel) is supposed to have 4:4:4 for ~$500 retail but only available in china. Xiaomi quality is generally pretty good.
Of the current TV's, the samsungs are good but the lower...
The two aren't mutually exclusive. There's some general purpose CPU functionality to run the smart-tv stuff, but the video processing is generally run in dedicated HW.
The other effect and perhaps main reason is reduce tracking artifacts (which you can see a bit on same rtings test). Initially it looked that 6xx vs 7xx diff might be due to different panel which seems odd given how similar the sets are, but then it made sense after they scoped the backlight...
> As far as PWM goes, I must not be sensitive to it. was concerned before I bought the JS9000 because it has been mentioned here so much, but even after reading up about it,
Only the 6xxx have the srsly low PWM freq problem. To clarify, they're all low freq, but the higher models approximate a...
It's very unlikely I'm conflating anything given I used to do this for a living rather than read about it in PR releases. The "enthusiast" nomenclature is pretty apt when folks get exited over the little things. Review sites like hardocp get free product to push articles for ad views & everyone...
This is all that really needs to be said, esp nice plasma colors. Games are far more akin to video than computer text.
Resolution these days is basically what sells more expensive GPUs, so it's no surprise what's being pushed by marketing depts and no surprise what folks believe, and it's no...
Objectively every game in existence already looks far worse than any film in existence; the visual defects/artifacts are blatantly obvious. In contrast, a single param in rasterization which is itself one step in a dozen is trite within the overall game, and no amount of tweaking it will affect...
Much of the "enthusiast" market everywhere consists of elevating tacked on cosmetics/tuning to the level of sophisticated design and engineering which goes into the original product (in this case the quite complex games and computers). If it makes someone personally happy to put a $XX turbo into...
Gaming at higher res is largely a pointless marketing exercise. No game looks anywhere near as good as something which "looks good" (eg. 1080p film), and increasing res for perceived sharpness does absolutely nothing to bridge that gap.
If perceived sharpness is the goal then the sharpness...
These also have low power requirements for those with a corp pc, htpc, etc. If they cut the 960 in half it can be powered by the pci-e slot alone much like the 750 (<75w), or if not it'll still draw less enough from the pci-e aux that it'll easily work with a molex/sata adapter.
4k 40"+ "monitors" will never "happen" in the way folk in this thread seem to take "happen" to mean (ie mainstream), much in the way that 1080p 40"+ monitors never "happened", nor 27" 2560 res IPS monitors. Regardless they're available for sale and can be owned for money.
Also, the GTX 950 is...
Those displays do exist in Korea where they're used in PC cafes. The "Wasabi Mango" 42 ips (likely LG panel) mentioned earlier is one example. The Crossover 44/404k is supposedly the same panel as the Philips 40 TV that's considered an alternative to the samsung, except a monitor version with DP...
Using a TV as a monitor is in practice a compromise but a "good" monitor is significantly simpler to create since the only real criteria is that it maps the incoming input onto the pixels directly. If anything all the drawbacks are a side-effect of the image modification and whatnot TV's are...
"A few", where? These are all simple single chip solutions and there's no way basically the same chip iterated costs much more, and the previous chips were evidently cheap.
> By all means go and enjoy your cheap laggy panel. The rest of us are here because we like what this thread is about -...

This was noted on the last page. Displayport to HDMI 1 didn't exist either...
