I am up 5.5 U2 now, for the P9X79 boards I dont think I had to but dont quote me on that, I also dont use the onboard NICS, I have Intel Quad NIC's in each server.
Just google whatever board you are thinking about using and see what others have done to get it work. Its not hard to slipstream...
Through the years I started with Napp-It, went to FreeNAS to try something new, Had stability issues with it, back on Napp-It.
Napp-It is no FreeNAS gui but it does run faster and has been more stable in my situation. Once everything is setup you rarely go to the GUI anyways. As far as jails...
Its hard to make a good recommendation without asking millions of questions but here are some ideas that I am using.
VM Storage in no particular order:
Option 1: Synology (Pick your flavor, I have a DS1511+ and DS1512+) Populated with SSD's
Option 2: HP Micro server with omni os + napp it...
Will 2 Amp Extremes fit next to each other, They are triple slot cards. I guess it depends on what setup you have.
How is your airflow, If airflow is poor people recommend reference cooler to exhaust the heat instead of keeping it in the case like most of the upgraded fans do.
So did you get anywhere with this?
In a previous build I had a 3930k with 2 GTX 680s all cooled by a 240mm x 25mm radiator and a 240mm x 60mm radiator. My GTX 680s never broke 40C at full load.
I still have the waterblocks if you are interested.
Does anyone have first hand experience with warranty through MSI or Zotac? I also am in the same "rut", usually go EVGA but that Zotac AMP Extreme looks beautiful.

Alright guys, I talked it over and decided to build to end all builds. I picked up the haswell Xeon and x10 supermicro board. I'll be recycling an older case found in the basement and will start out with some ram and upgrade later.
Thanks for all the help and ideas! The system is going to be...
I wish I had waited a bit longer, but a friend located about 10 LSI 9211-8i Sata/SAS raid cards fully tested to be functional and working. I know at least 4 are already spoken for and all 10 are for sale locally so let me know if you want one asap before they're all taken.
LSI 9211-8i $150 +...
I would go for the 4770k, that gets you on the 1150 socket and you could potentially upgrade again as the haswell chipset matures, hopefully for the better.
If the dollars make sense for you, make the move!
haha thanks man.
I'm mainly hoping to keep within the 1150 socket for future updatability, and I don't see any 4th gen Xeon's out yet.
Is there anything you'd do differently with $100-250 more, I mean if I'm gonna blow the budget, might as well make it spectacular. I'd rather build this now...
Why do so many companies pimp the gold circuitry in processor components on motherboards when silver is a better conductor of electricity?

I'd think that goes back to the vibration concern listed above, having a direct mounted fan on the CPU. No matter how well balanced the fan motor is, there's always vibration.
I don't know, the effort require to program the timing just perfectly would be astronomical. I'm trying to wonder what former-gymnast got into robotics so hard-core that they decided "Hey this is a good idea!"
Impressive, just not the first idea I'd have for a robot
Danny Bui, you're a guru in the truest sense of the word!
That case is awesome, but I'll be moving into a condo and size will be a huge consideration. If only it weren't as deep, I'd totally jump on that.
And I know I'm running a tight budget, but I'm a hardcore Intel fanboy, never had an...
I have 8, I'd like to eventually (when I can afford it) expand to 15. I've got my eye on the SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B sata enclosures, so I'm trying to find a nice plain case with 9 Ext 5.25 bays so I can fit 3 of those for 15 total HDDs and maybe an internal OS drive and cache drive if I can fit...
I haven't heard about the nexentaStor CE edition, but that sounds like an awesome option for the home NAS I'm trying to build!
Has anyone tried to virtualize it?
