OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Which options do I have in terms of migrating a napp-it install from an OmniOS VM to a new Solaris 11 VM? I am going to attach the HBA's to the Solaris 11 VM and import the pools. I am also going to recreate the Unix groups manually (used with the ACLs). Setting up snapshots and scrub again...

    Anyone use ownCloud?

I have tried ownCloud and pydio on VMs in my home ESXi server. I have always had problems. For instance, ownCloud is not able to handle very nicely that your files are not actually placed in ownCloud, but on a NAS. Pydio was difficult to install, and once it was installed, the administrative...

Do torrents reduce the lifespan of a hard drive quicker?

My 64 GB Crucial M4 from 2011 just died thursday. It has been hosting some VMs, and among them, my pfSense router. It was very difficult to diagnose the problem, but in the end I found out that up to 30-60 minutes after boot, the Crucial M4 datastore in VMware ESXi suffered a "permanent device...

Which 2x 120-128GB SSDs for my OmniOS/napp-it server?

Hi. I need to purchase 2x 120-128GB SSDs for my OmniOS/napp-it home server. One SSD will host some VMs, the other will serve as a read cache for the NAS/SAN. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Which second HBA to supplement my X10SL7-F board in OmniOS/napp-it server?

Hi. I need a new HBA, since the 8 ports on the LSI 2308 of my Supermicro X10SL7-F are soon saturated port-wise. Which HBA is recommended? A M1015? Any advice is appreciated.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

@ Gea_: Is there any documentation of how to use the TFTPD service in napp-it or can you explain how it works? I would like to use it in relation to IPXE boot. Edit: Nevermind. Found the "help" button :-)

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hi guys. I have a question related to NFS and UNIX permissions (ACL). I have three filesystems: A, B and C. Filesystem A and B have "group@" equal to "modify_set". Their ownership is "root:groupnameA" and "root:groupnameB" respectively. Filesystem C has "everyone@" equal to...

Here is the folder-ACL of one of the problematic filesystems: I have those files SMB share files for the two problematic filesystems, yes, but I cannot delete them. I don't have any non-default mountpoint settings. To be honest, I am not even sure what it is :-)

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Can someone please help me shed some light on this behaviour? All of the above datasets, but the 2nd and 4th, have the ACL @everyone=modify_set. The 2nd and 4th have the ACL @group=modify set. SMB sharing is off, but NFS sharing is on. Why does the FOLDER-ACL column show different...

ESXi 5.1 -> 5.5 upgrade = Guests have no network connection

ESXi 5.1 -> 5.5 upgrade = Guests have no network connection

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks for the reply _Gea. I don't think that I am having uppercase/lowercase or keyboard language problems, so perhaps a reinstall is the easiest way to go. The BE that contains the state prior installation is the "pre-napp-it" one, right?

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks for the reply Gea. If I understand you correctly, the system must boot in the napp-it BE. But when booted in the napp-it BE, shouldn't I be able to login as root in the console provided that I have allowed root login? If I did the "passwd root" in the wrong BE (that is, not in the...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

I've ordered the SL7 motherboard based on Gea_'s advice and will order the rest of the parts this evening, but am troubled by finding a flash drive to host ESXi. Any advice is appreciated. I have been looking into MLC USB sticks and SLC SATA DOM's, but cannot really figure out what the...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

Just updated the list.. I will order a Zalman MS800 instead of the Inter-Tech. Can anyone recommend another or better SSD than the upcomming Samsung 840 Evo? The Kingston SSDNow KC300 seems to be in the same price range, but I cannot find any reviews of it. Also, can anyone recommend a...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

I hear what you're saying, but have some concerns. First of all, I already have a mini-ITX DIY NAS in a stylish Lian Li PC-Q25 case, but its E350 CPU is too slow. Furthermore, its hardware is limited in terms of future expansion (in the amount of drives). I am concerned that I will have the same...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

WD Red's are only 5900 rpm, if I remember correctly.. So you're saying that running a NAS OS, such as FreeNAS, on ESXi is a bad idea and such an OS would be much better off running on a dedicated storage server? Would performance (in terms of throughput) be better for both the VMs on the...

New ethernet cables throughout the home - but which category?

Thank you for your comment. I was thinking about running conduit on the roof, from room to room between or below the insulation material. If anyone could recommend a guide in terminating Cat6/Cat6a, and/or installing conduit, if would be appeciated. Anyhow, you have given me enough input to...

New ethernet cables throughout the home - but which category?

Thank you, both of you, for your replies. I have been working with Cat 6 cables before and physically, they didn't feel different from Cat 5e (as I've read that Cat 7 does). Thank you for the explanation. I had a feeling that such future proofing would be kind of lame, but it is nice...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

Thank you once again. Do you happen to know if it is possible to reflash the LSI 2308 to IT mode? I will do as you suggest and operate with two pools of drives. However, to begin with and perhaps for foreseeable future, my first pool will only consist of one SSD hosting 3-4 VMs.

New ethernet cables throughout the home - but which category?

Hi. I have decided to run new ethernet cables throughout the home, since we have none in place at the time of writing (thus relying on unstable powerline adapters). I require these cables to be future proof. The newer standards are, as far as I understand: CAT6, CAT6a and CAT7. However...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

Thank you for the explanation. Seeing as I want an all-in-one box, which is going to be the home server for all purposes, it seems that I will need a controller for my mechanical drives that I can pass through. Would I be better off with with the currently selected Supermicro X10SLM+-F board...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

I must admit that your thread about the above build inspired me in terms of my selection of parts. However, I opted for the 4U rack case because with the drive caddies, a cheaper tower case will eventually cost about the same. I think your setup is a bit too advanced for me :) Perhaps in...

New home ESXi NAS build - advice much appreciated

Hi. I am going to completely redesign my mini-ITX NAS and transform it into an ESXi/virtualization capable NAS and home server. The mini-ITX NAS is currently a DIY "consumer-ish" machine with decent NAS drives, 8 GB non-ECC ram and a motherboard with an onboard E350 CPU. On the software side...
