a bit OOT: gluster and ceph are complecated :D. there is no way to make very simple due on involving many configuration. once the system is running, you will be happy with the performance aka clustering!!!.

you are talking different beast. OP talk does not invlove clutstering. on your focus, there are some good clustering file system, I prefer CEPH :P...

Yes and No... I had nightmare on SAS1 with HBA LSI card. some drive were not recognized randomly specially 2-3TB drives... this is just me, moved to SAS2 backplane was smooth sailing.

raid 0 is not JBOD :D..... you need to use HBA card not HW Raid card., ex lsi 2008..... when you setup raid 0, you are running "middle person" between drive and ZFS JBOD in lsi is called "Unconfigured Drive"

well, this is up to you.. in reality, hardware can not be disabled, the BIOS only blocks hardware functionality, the hardware still consume the same power. for blocking unnecessary functinalities, that make sense in real world.

I had much luck on sf product... fb is generic product, and they can program to match and work with your hw. refurbished one that matched is the best since just plug and play. Usually look used/refurb on ebay since the price can be lower than 50% or more....
