Hi,
I ordered the following for a home server and I would really appreciate some advice:
Intel Core i7 7800X
Gigabyte X299 AORUS Gaming 3
MSI GeForce GT 1030 Heatsink
It will serve SMB, Plex, Zoneminder & Home Assistant as well as transcoding my Blurays to x265.
It's going to be running 24/7...
Trying this in the past 8-10fps average is the max, with 1080p it only uses around 6 cores.
I'm pretty sure MulticoreWare Inc have a commercial product that does this, RipBot on Windows has hacked something like this together but I don't think MulticoreWare are very happy about it.
Anyone...
I remember H.265 encoding an old B&W film "Death by Hanging", the encode was larger than the Bluray, H.265 doesn't seem to like excessive grain, I remember there is a grain tuning option on x265 but I didn't try it.
H.265 seems to love clean digital camera video and 3D!
My findings on 5 simultaneous Handbrake CLI encodes from blu-ray 1080p to H.265 with source framerate and audio passthrough at CRF 17 using 24 x Xeon cores with HT at 2.5GHz (AVX2), 192GB DDR4 RAM.
OS: Ubuntu 17.04, Handbrake installed with apt using John Stebbins PPA, all packages up to date...
Hi,
Sorry to bother you all.
I'm in the process of transcoding hundreds of 1080p movies to h.265 using Handbrake CLI, using a watercooled Linux server with 24 cores of Xeon with AVX2.
I basically want to have multiple x265 transcodes running to make best use of the hardware, would I simply...
Hi,
Like a complete idiot I just went out and bought one of these used,
having read an incorrect review that mentioned Mac compatibility...
So I have been trying to figure out the best way to get this thing
working in a Mac environment.
I would like to use the networking on it...
Hi,
This is a strange request for help, I have a custom case, it's basically a big black cube, I am not happy about the disk area in the top and am looking for suggestions on alternative enclosures.
In cm it's a void roughly 38 long x 35 wide x 17 high accessible from the top of the case.
I...
Thanks raiderj.
Does anyone have any opinions on whether I should put the troubled two in to a windows machine and run WinDFT?
UPDATE: WinDFT fails, fingers crossed HGST will accept two US disks in AU.
Unbelievable, regular SATA, bare metal Ubuntu 12.04 server, the two bad drives basically stop Ubuntu from booting with the same "buffer I/O error", oddly they were mounted in the "cage" right next to each other, that does mean that I didn't run SMART on them, the other four disk passed...
Thanks!
raiderj - totally agree, I was clutching at straws hoping the disks would come good under another OS, I will do as you say under Linux.
_Gea - I didn't even notice a napp-it ESXi VM, that's awesome, once I have isolated any faulty disks I will probably go with this option.
What a nightmare, luckily I have no data on there yet!
ESXi 5.5 on a Supermicro X9SRH-7TF with 24GB ECC RAM, the onboard LSI 2308 IT in passthrough mode.
32GB and 64GB SLC SSDs
Six (new disks in vacuum-sealed bags dated Jan 2011) Hitachi HDS5C302-A580 2TB drives (that have been lying around...
Thanks Loco Laptop!
I ordered a Xeon E5 2603 yesterday and I should hopefully receive it in the next 48 hours, worst case should be early next week.
Richard
Hi,
Can someone please help me modify the BIOS on my X9SRH-7TF to support an ES processor I grabbed from Ebay?
Basically the processor is an Intel Xeon QA88 1.6GHz 20MB 8-CORE LGA 2011 ES and when installed the motherboard sits in a boot loop, the screen never turns on.
I contacted...
Hello,
I can't make my mind up and hope you can help, I'm consolidating and having a case built that houses 2 x EATX motherboards and 30 disks.
I have a dual xeon motherboard (eight cores) with 24GB RAM and three eight port SATA cards and a quad core motherboard with a HD6970.
The...
Hi,
Spotswood is building me a case:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1601030
So we were just going to have 24 power and 24 SATA directly connected.
But now I am thinking 24 individual backplanes:

UPDATE: I got a reply from pactech...
I got a reply from pactech, all good headers are available.
Now I am thinking that I have 48 LED's to incorporate, any ideas?
So right now the case panels are solid, no holes for anything.
Some things that are going through my mind:
-Using an 8 x 8 LED matrix
-Somehow using the...

Jesse B: That is perfect!
Basically people can solve the "browser" requirement anyway they want.
Option 1 maximises the time spent on a useful interface.
The SourceForge page has the features on there and I am continually updating this.
Would you consider creating a SourceForge account so I...
I have created a project and funded it to the tune of $200 USD.
https://www.pubsoft.org/pubsoft.py/project?proj=Solaris.Server.ZFS.monitoring
And here is the sourceforge page:

Its basically a melding of napp-it and JPerfmeter on HTTP.

The thing that just hit me is the case I am having built has 2 PCs inside, one for ZFS and the other for Win7 gaming, it would be cool for the webserver to run on the beagleboard so I can monitor both PCs from the same screen...
UPDATE: FYI the actual URL of the case project so you can see what...
picker: does JPerfmeter work on remote hosts i.e. will JPerfmeter run on the beagleboard and be able to monitor the solaris box?
JPerfmeter documentation seems to be non-existent.
UPDATE: I launched it http://jperfmeter.sourceforge.net/jperfmeter.jnlp and can see RStat in there.

Beagleboard-XM $149
It can be USB powered
It can drive a monitor
It has ethernet
This driving the:
Lilliput FA1011-NP/C/T $229
I may need to add a USB powered hub to this.
Could be optimal for me.

ChrisBenn: makes sense as you have many more options.
You could have:
Display connected directly to Solaris displaying web page. (most cable clutter)
MCU connected via wifi or ethernet displaying web page. (cheap option)
Tablet connected via wifi displaying web page. (easiest option)
Any...
Jesse B, I was confused thanks for clarifying, I didn't pickup on the abbreviation MCU.
Your idea does sound best (although more work) as it would be preferable to have a single cable and to not have to worry about touchscreen drivers in Solaris.
Agreed Beagleboard is overkill.
So MCU...
For me it might be a better plan to use the VGA port for video, USB for the touchscreen and 12v power that I should be able to hook up directly to the ATX PSU.
A USB display for video like the http://www.lilliput.cn/UM-1010.html would probably be problematic on Solaris. With the smaller...

ANOTHER EDIT maybe resistive wouldn't be that bad as there will probably be no...
picker: JPerfmeter looks very cool, thanks for that, does it have an optimal resolution?
Jesse B:
Internal USB header is a great idea.
Do you have any particular screens or indeed resolutions in mind?
I found this touchscreen driver for the 3M controller...
Jesse B: I think you should do it ;)
The screen layout could be:
CPU util
Mem Util
Pools Util
Network Util
Each of those areas could be clicked on, for example: click on CPU it would historically graph each core
You could allow common operations to be performed like shutdown (maybe...
Hi
Apologies in advance if this is OT, if so, could you point me in the
right direction.
I am building a ZFS server and looking for advice on how to implement
a touchscreen in the front of it's case.
The screen would show system info, pools and utilization (CPU / Disk /

Hi,
I am in Sydney, Australia and having issues getting somebody to build me a case here, so I am going international (who cares about the postage).
I was thinking that I should either get 2 cases joined together, I was reading one girl had 2 x Lian Li PC-P80 cases joined, which is pretty...
