they arent end of story. some situations can survive desktop drives but i bet after about 8-10 drives your pushing your luck with vibration. you may be able to get away with more by adding a rubber pad between the drive and cady but thats just a workaround. I did see some wd? sas drives i think...

have you ever tried a live linux cd? I have had really good luck testing hw that way i havent messed with the duets yet but standard esata on a dell was no issue. this would atleast tell you if the issue is a windows thing or if its a hw issue. the portmultiplexers can be a pain to trouble...
