6850 or 460 1gb are without doubt the best cards to buy right now for price/performance if you are going to overclock. As was previously stated, they are both excellent overclockers and will give you 6870/gtx470 performance for $150. I have not tested or sold one card yet that wouldn't overclock...
Personally I would check to make sure that your heat sink is mounted properly. That is too hot for a single card. I have noticed that bad cores or overclocked cores usually generate errors within the first 300 frames of OCCT. After that it seems more temperature dependent. I would say your card...
The limiting factor on these cards is usually the VRM controller. So you may be able to get a higher core clock if you reduce your memory overclock.
Download OCCT and run the GPU test tool with error detection. Then play with it until you find the overclock you like that won't create errors...
UtopiA is spot on here. Buy whatever is cheaper as they are both the best value/performance cards out right now. I would recommend the 1gb cards though. This next year is going to be a great year for gaming monitors and you will want a card that runs 1920x1080 well.
Run prime95 and check for errors, then run OCCT cpu test and check for errors, then if no errors are found, run OCCT GPU test and check for errors. If you still get no errors then find another rig you can put that video card in and see if you get the same results.
Here is a link to the latest...
Yes a new pump would improve your temps. Getting the XSPC Raza block that nissanztt90 mentioned would help a lot more though. Then when you have another 70 bucks go buy a new pump!
Your opinion is noted.
In a thread where the OP already realizes that Nvidia usually has better drivers.
Now we see that your just being an ass because you were proved wrong about the polls.
Troll on as the OP's question was already answered and you are now just providing entertainment to...
Those of us that have been around long enough know that Nvidia's driver development team is heads and shoulders above ATI's. ATI's team has been growing and getting better with the acquisition by AMD. They have actually added a couple of devs to work on linux, where previously if you had a linux...
I have two 6870's in crossfire both overclocked as in my sig for my second machine. The top one idle's at 31c the bottom one at at 27c. This is in a slightly modified Thermaltake Armor case with pretty good cooling. Room temp is at 20c. Both cards have fan speeds at 75% and ramp up to 100% at...
I have the latest version installed on my main machine and it starts up automatically with no UAC pop ups. Download GPU-z and check to see if your cards are overclocked on startup.

Seems like a 3-1 vote in favor of Nvidia having the better drivers to me.
That doesn't mean that Nvidia is better. Just that they make better drivers most of the time. I still bought 2 4850's instead of 2 9800gt's when...
Well everyone needs to make there own decisions, but I'm sure that I save my business much more time and money by making sure my clients computers are running cool and at their peak performance. If I would have never checked the card at all, that card is much more likely to break down, or over...
Thats funny, every poll conducted here as to driver quality shows the [H] community disagreeing with you.
ATI cards have been more powerful for the money for the last couple of years and Nvidia has had much better drivers for many years. Anyone who disagrees is looking through green or red...
Are you going to overclock? The GTX 460 768 will destroy a 5770 and they both overclock really well. I would find a gtx 460 768 or if you have a microcenter nearby go and get the 130 palit GTX 460 1gb they have right now for 130 after rebate.
Microcenter has a 460 1gb non SE for about 130 right now. It is one of the worst cooled of the 460's but they run pretty cool anyway and will be much better than the other two especially if your not going to overclock.
Higher detail with less AA or AF always looks better in my opinion. I would always recommend forgetting aa and af until you reach the max texture settings available in game.
If anyone thinks otherwise or has screen shots that seem to suggest otherwise I would love to see them.
He is right that a highly overclocked 8600 will be more than enough for 99% of games out there. However for the two most popular games of this year (Black Ops which is now the highest grossing game ever and Starcraft II) a quad core is a very noticeable improvement.
I personally feel that at...
For the money the HAF 932 is hard to beat. You can fit a triple in the top with no mods, and great cooling for SLI if your not going to water cool your cards.
No way should you drop that much on a 775 chip! After the launch of Sandy Microcenter will have processor and board combos for 300 with rebates and 350ish without. Unless you can buy from someone looking to upgrade that is a waste of money for the performance increase you will get.
Buy a cheap dual core from someone looking to upgrade. If you lived near me I have a bunch of dual cores that would be drastically better than a 3800+ for cheap. Check craigslist where you live, or check neweggs barebones open box section every day for a good deal. Just make sure to get a decent...
Every test I've ever done with thermal tape has shown much worse performance than no interface at all. So now I use thermal epoxy. Yes its permanent, so do it right the first time.
Honestly most of those processors run at low temps all the way to about 3.8 ghz. If you take the time to adjust all the voltages yourself, I'm sure you can get that processor to run quite cool at 3.6ghz.
If you leave things on auto while overclocking the motherboard usually adds way more...
They are close enough that how you apply them will probably matter more than what you buy. I will always recommend X23 for video cards. Especially as you can't apply tons of pressure to most of the video card heatsinks.
For applications where you can apply pressure like, water cooling blocks...
Well noticeable seems to be very different with people here. As I mentioned above I notice anything below 60fps in a first person shooter, and so will upgrade my main computer to the point where I have no drops below that point at whatever resolution I play at. If the game is new enough or badly...
AS5 is great temperature wise but I hate it at this point, as I have had a couple of people bring me motherboards with AS5 inside the cpu socket or smeared on circuit traces. Only use AS if you are careful with it, it can kill your card or motherboard if you are very careless.
Personally I think x23 is by far the best for video cards and is all I use. It is easy to apply and wipes off completely with just a cloth if need be.
What is more important than what paste you buy is how you apply it. Don't just apply a drop and put the heatsink on. These are huge die's in...
With games like starcraft II every cpu is a bottleneck. You can go buy a new 6 core intel, overclock it to 5ghz and you will still be limited by it. The question is how much of a bottleneck are you willing to accept. That is why I posted some of those charts. People can get a reference as to how...
Just wanted to relate an experience.
Today I was putting a MSI gtx 460 in a customers new gaming pc. I pulled it out of the box and started overclocking it. Straight out of the box it was idling at about 40 degrees C. If I attempted OCCT or Furmark it would hit 80 degrees relatively quickly...
No one is saying a q6600 is a bad cpu. It's a great CPU and better than probably 90% of the cpus being used right now. Most of them overclocked very well and I would say its one of my favorite cpu's in the last 3 years.
The question asked was, is it a bottleneck to a 5970. Absolutely...
It is a much much better radiator than the single that comes with the thermaltake kit. Also that radiator works very well with low output pumps so using it will definitely improve your temps. You will still be working with crappy waterblock though. I think I saw someone that had a swiftech gtz...
Depends completely on the games you play. Also everyone has a different idea of what a bottleneck is, and everyone also has a different idea what a noticeable bottleneck is. Personally I notice anything under 60 fps on any first person shooter, but am happy with 30+ fps on a RTS.
Of course...
