Finally, a good excuse to clean up my home office setup!
The Razer is my mobile gaming/VM-work environment. Desktop is my home gaming/VM-work environment. The HP ML350 G6 tower under the desk is my ESXi/HyperV (depending on what's going on) lab environment. The HP all-in-one is my...
Haven't seen a thread about one yet so figured I'd throw this up here. I just ordered my Razer Blade QHD+ 512GB with 1060 today. Looking forward to having a laptop be my daily-driver again. If anyone is interested, I will post some benchmarks once I get it next week
My boss has a couple of 1.5 TB WD Green drives in a RAID1 in his DS411+ and other than being slow they've been pretty stable. There are definitely some access speed issues due to the drive power-down that can make file manipulation on the drive do weird things, but using it as a backup spot...
It is my primary production workstation for my home business, as well as my video encoding workstation for volunteer projects and such so I couldn't afford to wait too long.
As for going with the i7 over i5 my experience between my wife's i5 and my 920 has been that it is worth it to have the...
So my 4 year old workstation stopped booting this morning, and my wife gave the okay, so I ordered the parts for my return to SFF this afternoon and hope to start on the build this Tuesday if everything arrives on time.
Here's what I ended up with:
i7 4770k
Asrock Z87E-ITX
EVGA GTX670 SC...
I live in Eastern WA as well - Pasco, which means I have the choice of Frontier DSL (formerly Verizon), Charter cable, or PocketInet fixed wireless. Charter it is for me.
Thankfully Charter has been ramping up their speeds every couple of years here, and hasn't started imposing usage caps...
Ended up grabbing a Lenovo Y510P for her while it was on sale at Newegg earlier in the month. She loves it, and I must say it performs quite admirably for a sub-$1000 gaming notebook.
Now I'm looking at the Gigabyte P35K. Very similar specs to the MSI GS70, but smaller and option to have an internal DVD/RW drive is a bonus for my wife's needs. User-upgradeable/replaceable storage is also a huge bonus for me. Hopefully more reviews become available next week upon release.
I'm running a similar setup and see no need to upgrade anytime soon. Heck, I haven't even overclocked my 920 in a year and I've never experienced a "need" for anything faster even with newer games (Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, Witcher 2).
Personally, I don't like when I get spammed with the ads in my FB feed. But if I see a friend like or recommend a local business I'm more-likely to check them out than if I see the sign driving down the street.
I can't tell you how the larger versions are, but my 50" Vizio M501 has a gorgeous picture and great passive 3D (yay for cheap glasses), and is super thin. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with a Panasonic VT series plasma if you have the space.
I game over a wireless bridge on my desktop, and on wifi on my laptop all the time. As long as you have sub 90ms ping (completely doable on even decent 2.4Ghz N) it should work pretty well. Obviously super-twitch games will lend better to wired connections just so you don't have that extra...
Roku has Plex support which works great for most media. Otherwise the Apple TV supports streaming from those mentioned or anything shared from an iTunes media collection.
As far as direct-streaming from a shared folder without any additional serving software, the only way I'm aware to...
I'm very interested in seeing how the AI really pans out. I love the idea of realistic roving bands of orcs, etc. I do realize the TTP is going to be very short, but hopefully people will keep that kind of crap toned down after a while. I'll probably wait until a month or two after launch before...
Thanks for the feedback guys. I love the price of the GE60, but the single-fan cooling for both CPU and GPU worries me a bit. Sounds like it runs kinda loud most of the time and has lackluster battery. I think right now I'm going to plan for a GS70. Time to save those pennies!
I haven't played EQ in a couple of years, but my SK has over 200 days played and I'm looking forward to getting back into Norrath. I spent a few hours watching the SOE coverage of live panels and reveal etc the other night and am looking forward to this new vision. The lore especially interests...
Hi guys, just wanted to see if anyone else has done any reflow work on their YLOD PS3? I've done it twice now, once without flux and over the weekend with. I'm hoping it lasts a little longer this time (1st time it ran ok for about 2 weeks). Any experiences with the flux reflow fix?
Hey everyone, I'm just now getting started on the web side of things after 11 years doing System Admin work. I'm currently going through the Codecademy courses for basic HTML/CSS/Javascript and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on where to go from there, other than just playing with...
Hi all, I've been watching laptop reviews for the last few months as I plan to purchase a new laptop for my wife that can serve double-duty for work/gaming. She is a 4th grade teacher who sometimes needs to hook up a laptop to her classroom projector for project work, videos, etc. She also...
You can transfer files wirelessly to AV Player HD, there is an option to turn on wireless file-transfer (creates a web interface with upload option you can launch from the IP address of your iPad from a PC/Mac, or FTP server at the iPad's IP address). In my experience there is no way to open...
Checked Sager's website and they now list the 670MX and 675MX parts as upgrade options on the NP9170. I'm wondering if the 680MX will be reserved for the dual-GPU chassis' as it will require a larger PSU?
Edit: AvaDirect has the same options today as well.
The most exciting thing not mentioned during the Apple keynote today? Introduction of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX in the new iMac 27-inch. The details at NVidia's website seem to indicate that it's a full die 680 core for mobile (1536 shaders clocked to 720 MHz). It looks to have quite a bit...
Thanks for your input guys. I already have GPU and PSU I listed and plan to reuse them to save a little $. I do a lot of blu-ray encoding for playback on my Apple TV so the i7 is necessary to me for the performance increase there.
Interesting idea with the PCI-e 1x adapter, I hadn't seen...
Hi all, thanks for stopping by. I am planning to build out my next home gaming PC in the coming months, and was hoping I could get some input from you SFF guys. I haven't built a SFFish machine since my Athlon XP 1800 in an Antec Minuet M-ATX case, and have since used two mid-tower cases and a...
