Partitions don't go bad; drives go bad. Both partitions get screwed when the drive goes bad. There just is no need to partition anything these days, short of dual booting an OS drive.
To keep things short, I have a GoPro, a DSLR, and a phone, all which record HD video. I have all this raw video footage and I'm looking for something simple to make video edits. For example, I use Paint.net to do picture edits as it's simple, easy to use, free, and does most of what I ask. I am...
The rear panel is a little close to the hot swap SATA connectors. I used right-angle connectors to give me clearance. I'm not sure straights would work, or if they do, its a worryingly tight fit. The standard length was enough to make it from the drives to the mobo neatly.
Fair enough. I did research on Storage Spaces and decided (right now as-is) it wasn't for me, but if it performed as well as I wanted it to (even in the future) I would pick it up for sure. Your data seems simple; you may not mind the slowness of Parity Write if you don't write to the pool...
If you are concerned about losing data, you need to have that data backed up yesterday. Like you, I piecemeal-ed my storage setup using whatever drives were on sale, but I still have my irreplaceable pictures, music, documents, and video backed up to an external, even though it's only 1/5th of...
Thanks for this, but I don't think SnapRAID is immune, because it only runs updates for modified files, and it identifies modified files by timestamp. If a bit flipped in a file not marked for update, it would be transparent, like all the other snapshot raid systems. You would need to run a...
Would like to add that this is also possible with other snapshot RAID systems as well: SnapRAID, disParity.
Would also like to add that this only works if you catch the data rot BEFORE you update the parity. If you update after data rot, your bad data is now considered good and this point is moot.
Perfect example. I decided to make a pyramid that stretched as high as the world would go. This was the original goal; 8 friends decided to join in and help.
After that was done, we extended the pyramid 16 blocks down into the ground. Then we built a lake inside. Then a crypt. Then concentric...
This! I can't find any good reason for these threads anymore; everyone wants to be lazy and not test it out for themselves, then we end up with 16 pages of useless back and forth. This isn't a car; it's stupid easy to go back. Like every new operating system ever, you'll never know if you like...
Adding to this, FlexRAID / SnapRAID / disParity are all very easy to setup and restore from. Essentially once a drive is lost, you point the respective software to your new drive and rebuild the missing data. You only lose your largest drive to store your parity data. All of these systems are...
Sticky: If your question ever is "I have a computer with [something that isn't an SSD], would an SSD be better/worth it?" The answer is always Yes.
But I have Windows XP... still a Yes
But I have SATA I... still a Yes
But I don't have TRIM... still a Yes
But my CPU is 8 years old...
I recently took some time to check out all of these solutions as I wanted to follow a similar upgrade path like you. Here is what I know:
StableBit DrivePool is very nice. Its much simpler and easier to use than Drive Bender, is cheaper, and provides the same features and data protection as...
Around here it is always encouraged not to purchase these devices as they are not only historically notoriously slow, but many other competing products from Synology, QNAP or even building your own is not only cheaper but grants better performance and flexibility. I know Synology has SHR which...
Sorry to piggy back, but is ZFS the only file system that can properly handle today's storage to mitigate data loss? My personal research on hard drives has me scared that any drive I buy nowadays will die on a whim.
I have a similar issue with my Q25B; the SATA connections are rotated 90 degrees such that they are now horizontal. Additionally, I don't have SATA power connections on my backplane; only 3x Molex. I'll take a picture and post when I get home tonight.
EDIT: Correction, it has the SATA and...
Hard drives are orientation independent; you can place a hard drive in any orientation and it will be fine. Laptops have spinning hard disks in them and they fair just fine. Heat and sudden shock are what you want to avoid. Keep the drives cool and make sure the drive won't physically fall...
To my knowledge, what boss vendor said is possible; as long as all of the RAID hardware is IDENTICAL (down to the firmware) you should be able to just swap drives. However, I have only ever heard this in the even of a RAID card/enclosure failure. I have NEVER heard of pulling RAID drives as SOP...
Drobos are historically notoriously slow, but I do not have experience with the 5N model. Around here it is always encouraged not to purchase these devices as many other competitors such as Synology, QNAP, or even building your own is not only cheaper but grants better performance and...
Storage Spaces has been proven to perform very, very poorly when using the parity mode for data protection as well as when getting close to a full drive, especially with multiple sized drives. This is a very good review of Storage Spaces, and we have multiple threads around here with [H] members...
I recently looked at FreeNAS for my storage solution. I ultimately did not choose it, but here is what I learned:
First: RAID-Z1 equivalent to RAID 5, RAID-Z2 equivalent to RAID 6
With ZFS, you can only expand the array in sets (called vdevs). Your initial set will probably be a 3x4TB...
First, how important is the data on this "big storage" drive(s)?
Remember, RAID 0 stripes your data across both drives. This means if one drive fails, both drives lose data. I would only run a RAID 0 if the data on the array is backed up somewhere else.
Second, which drives are these? What are...
For Edification: Port Multiplication for eSATA allows you to connect more than one drive to a single eSATA port. A Port Multiplier eSATA port can connect to devices like this without needed 4 separate cables.
1. You may need to connect it to your system using USB 3 first to setup the RAID...
How is your data protected now? Is everything on this WHS server duplicated, or only select shares? Do you want everything to be just one big pool, or do you not care about pooling anymore?
Striped vs Spanned: Striped will be faster, but if one drive fails you lose all your data. Since you...
A lot of people have done a lot of research on Storage Spaces and the general consensus is not to trust your live data to it just yet. I've heard of reports of missing space, poor performance in parity mode, and other quirks that makes me nervous trusting my data to it before a service pack that...
Yeah this did get mighty off topic. My apologies for contributing to the noise, but I've learned so much about ZFS and its capabilites.
Through all this, did we ever answer the OP's question?
