I tried doing an online reservation this morning, but had trouble getting it to go through. Finally got an email confirmation that my i5 2500k and P8P67 Deluxe were ready for pickup, so went out in the snowstorm and drove 45 minutes to the store in Richardson Texas (ironic, huh...snowstorm in...
Picked up a Core i5 2500k from Microcenter for $179 today and have the following on order:
ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
G. Skill Ripjaws 8gb 7-8-7-24
Noctua NH-D14 cooler
Will combine with existing components:
OCZ Vertex LE OS drive / Velociraptor 300 for games
2 x Sapphire 6950s in Crossfire...
I just placed my order on the Egg, I also had to cancel my Vengence order due to incompatability with the Noctua NH-D14 cooler. I went with G.Skill Ripjaws, I don't like the way they look (black and red with the Asus P8P67 Blue), but that's not a big concern...
Disciple Lan, what cpu cooler are you using? I'm thinking of building a very similar rig to yours and I'm hopin the Noctua NH-D14 will clear the RAM. Thanks.
Raven 2 looks kinda blah, but I like the window on the right side since that would be visible under my desk. The thermal and acoustic properties look promising. Only question I have is where do all the cables go that plugin to the motherboard and power supply? Since those are all on the top...
Agreed. This was just a little experiment since I already had the cards and I wanted to see how much hassle is involved in setting up Crossfire. I've already reassembled my gaming rig to it's original configuration and I'm going to put the 4870 into another machine to replace my 8800 gts 320...
I ran the Far Cry 2 benchmark with all settings pretty much maxed out:
Here are the results:
Only 9 more fps on average, and actually had 1 fps DROP in minimum framerate using mixed Crossfire. Looking to me like the limitations of the 4870 512MB don't allow for big gains in...
Here are my Vantage results, Crossfire on the left and 4890 solo on the right:
Here was the 3dMark06 result with my single 4890:
Here was the 3dMark06 result with 4890 / 4870 512MB crossfire:
So far, so good....my Crysis / Warhead installations are all hosed up, so I'm...
Not sure what I did, but crossfire seems to be working great now. I'll post screenshots shortly, but 3dMark06 was 19,100ish with single 4890, now over 22,000! Vantage is running now, I think it will post nice improvements as well.
The only thing I can think of that I did differently than...
Ok..I gave it a shot, but having major issues. Crysis Warhead Benchmark runs slower with Crossfire enabled than with the single 4890, and 3dMark06 and Vantage both have horribly stretched and jittery screens. I shut off 3dMark and Vantage right after they start running, but I can see that the...
Bummer....the 4870 has an Accelero S1 attached and it hits my power supply when I try to install it. I'll have to reconfigure some stuff this weekend and try again.
I use my machine quite a bit for watching HD-DVD's on PowerDvd 7.3, and every Catalyst version between 8.11 and 9.6 caused me massive issues on playback of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. The new 9.7 drivers work flawlessly, so I'll be sticking with that even though I HATE the new CCC layout.
Of course...
I've never done crossfire before, so what the hell....I'll throw the 4870 512 in there tonight after work and see what happens. If the memory issue hurts the AA performance I can always sell it and buy another 4890. Any tips on the installation?
I've never known my actual FPS in Crysis, I...
Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing I'd want to do at least 2xAA, which seems to require more GPU memory...meaning the crossfire setup might actually hurt me in Crysis since I would only have the 512 mb memory available instead of the 1gb from the 4890. Hmmmm....
I play Crysis, Warhead, and Far Cry 2 on a BenQ E2400HD. I also watch a lot of HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies, I think the monitor does well in both scenarios. However....
A WORD OF CAUTION.....
There is a known bug with ATI drivers with 1920x1080 resolution with dx10. If gaming in dx10 is...
Just got the Samsung and use it as a TV while I'm messing around on the computer (the Samsung has a direct cable input running from the wall). Also have it hooked up as a second monitor on my work laptop, so it's pulling triple duty! I only use it on my gaming rig when I have a ton of things...
Thanks for the quick reply. Here's more info on my setup:
Q9650 @ 4.05ghz
Vista Ultimate 64
8 gig RAM
First monitor (gaming) BenQ E2400HD 1920x1080
Second monitor (not on during gaming) Samsung T240HD 1920 x1200
Currently using Catalyst 9.7 drivers (and the horrible CCC)
I have a 4890 in my gaming rig and my brother gave me his 4870 512. 3 questions:
1) Would I see substantial improvement in Crysis, Crysis Warhead, or Far Cry 2 if I added the 4870?
2) Would the 'downgrade' of memory from 1 gig to 512 in my 4890 cause issues?
3) When not gaming, is...
I just got this monitor and every time it goes into sleep mode I get the 'Out of Sync' error. I'm running Vista 64 and the driver on the disc won't install (I guess it's a 32 bit driver?) I have an ATI 4870 video card and have tried playing with some of the settings in CCC, but no luck...
I picked up an e0 version at the Irving TX Fry's yesterday for $179. Dropped it into my Asus p5k deluxe last night, set voltage to 1.2875 and FSB to 450. Ran overnight Orthos with no problem....great chip!
