I love 'em all.
And I love particular things about all of them.
Windows has simple installs for the most part. And there are tools like "Everything Search" that are fantastic at filtering files.
"Charles" sees a lot of development love on OS X. iTerm is a beautiful console emulator.
Linux is...
There have a been a lot of focuses on improving performance on Windows 8. I can't find the particular resources about optimizing text and image processing algorithms and how Office 2013 was redesigned to be more power efficient, but here's a host of other entries by developers at Windows:

Check out some of the low cost hosting options on http://lowendbox.com/
But if you want reliable hosting, DigitalOcean and Linode are probably the way to go. Are you comfortable with handling a UNIX box?
The cool thing about DigitalOcean and Linode is that they both have IRC support channels...
Just wondering, is this a proof of concept? If not, it may make more sense to prioritize marketing and getting feedback from users and the sort of pain points they have. None of us (presumably) are using your product, so us giving feedback may not be *as* useful. Still useful, but acquiring and...
Like odoe mentioned, tmux + $EDITOR + whatever language/platform of choice (for me, it's a toss up between Node.js, Python, Clojure).
And for me, the editor of choice is usually vim.
Light Table is a very cool editor/IDE for HTML + Javascript. It also supports Clojure and Python well, but that's outside of the scope of the question.
It offers live previews/updates to your code as you're editing it.
Chris Granger, the creator of Light Table, raised over $300k on Kickstarter...
You can go through the K&R book for learning how to program in C. The coding style is outdated, but it will build a solid foundation on system calls. It's a very short book. If you're dedicated and just starting out to program, you should be able to go through it in about 4-6 weeks.
The book is...
They should do something on Kickstarter, like all of these other games: http://www.kickstarter.com/discover/categories/video%20games/most-fundedmore#p1
It would be much better in terms of marketing and visibility, too.
I bet we'd see a lot more interesting games if Nintendo made their SDK/dev kit accessible to just about anybody, no need to jump through legal loopholes or asking for permission.
If you're an Android developer, you just need to get a Google lifetime license for $100 and then you can publish any...
I think at this price point, it's really trying to compete with OnLive's gaming console: http://www.onlive.com/game-system/ more than anything else. It'll be a while before it's on equal footing with a dedicated console like the 360 (complete with Kinect accessory) or PS3.
And it's a decent...
Games like SC2 and Diablo 3 are designed with lowend graphics cards in mind. They want as many players as they can -- therefore, their games have scalable graphics. It's great, I think. Not enough game manufacturers that would cater as low as Blizzard. That's one of the reasons the original...
Just curious, why are you so worried about putting it together?
The best way to get over that anxiety is to just keep on doing it. Repeated exposure to putting computers together will make you less antsy about breaking computer parts. Not to mention a lot of parts are covered under warranty...
I think it's hit or miss. Some people have really good experiences with AppleCare (compared with other companies' warranty policies), to the point that they shop exclusively Apple because they don't want to deal with any headache or issues.
My biggest concern with the macbook pros is that the front edge of the laptop that your hands lay upon is rather sharp. It's something you can get used to, but I would have preferred a more rounded and comfortable edge.
Bet he's just racking up posts.
Though for something like music and movies, aren't Google Music, Spotify, and Netflix better alternatives because you can access them from any device? Though you have to stream them from the servers...
It would be nice if Apple products (in general) were easily repairable. If they had the utilitarian value of Thinkpads, I think Apple products would last even longer after being out-of-warranty. They certainly 'age' slower than PCs because as long as they're still officially supported, they are...
I don't have dimensions in mind, but something that I could leave on the side of a laptop without worrying about it breaking off. Something that would sit flush so I can put a laptop, flash drive and all (still attached), into a backpack/laptop case.
So I've been looking for small form factor (SFF) flash drives to set and forget on various computers, while I backup files to them on a regular basis (using tools like bvckup. What I'm looking for are flash drives that sit flush with the computer.
I'm not against using really portable...
It's still weird. Gaming developers are quite constrained by development time. Possibly much more than they are about program efficiency. They would benefit much more from a higher level language with certain core operations that they would have to drop down into Assembly for. What I'm imagining...
Is the touchscreen worth the extra premium? It's not a Cintiq by any means, right? You wouldn't bring the monitor down just so you can use it, the way you'd do with a tablet laptop. I'm not sure how often I'd use the touchscreen standing up. But then again, I think 'touchscreen' controls should...
I mean, Android is certainly getting more and more polished over the years. Look at Android 4.0. Revamp of UI and themes, amongst other things. Kind of sad that not every device is getting official versions of ICS, but there's a great hacking community that brings all those things forward...
Well, you can always VNC into a desktop, or use something like what OnLive is providing for the iPad, if you're ever being bummed out by the lack of ram.
Also, some people have even gone so far to use the iPad to program with. Pretty easy to do, thanks to software like iSSH, screen/tmux, and...
I was wondering, if it was a web-surfing build, why not get a prebuilt computer from the For Sale forum or elsewhere?
Maybe I'm super cheap, but isn't $500 a lot to for a surfing build? Maybe for an average gaming build it'd be okay. I guess you didn't have a Microcenter/Fry's near you...
You could always try running one on your own anyway. in parallel with your hosted blog. Heh, maybe roundrobin that, and see if you're up to keeping everything at home. Then a few months down the road, you can decide whether to keep or scratch the hosting service and self-host.
Your home...
Well the AutoHotKey script for changing volume still worked while playing SC2.
Here, this is what I have in my .ahk script:
; volume down
F18::
SoundSet -2
SoundSet, -2, wave
gosub, vupdt
return
; volume up
F19::
SoundSet +2
SoundSet, +2, wave
gosub, vupdt...
Do you guys just keep your games stored or tucked away? I've collected about 60-70 games, but I try to lend them out to friends, cousins, and neighbors in the hopes some will actually try playing them. Occasionally this happens, but... not as often as I'd like. I don't like putting games away...
A lot of people on Windows computers use AutoHotkey. It's not the only one out there, but it's not that difficult to set up shortcuts. Here's one for volume that I found randomly. I can't find the one that I used so I decided to link that one -- I'd hope it works. Although, t's pretty easy to...
They should get started on that, stat.
But this doesn't stop them completely, right...?
Wow, Apple has so much less to worry about in terms of hardware support. They just drop old hardware. Poor PowerPC Macs.
When did you get around to reading all those books?
I'm a junior in college and hardly bother checking into any cool CS texts. I really enjoy CS but I just lack the motivation to look into books. Instead, what I end up doing is sit in classes I don't belong in, hoping to pick up knowledge via...
But why choose C as a first programming language? There are more fun languages to get used to -- like Perl, Python, or Ruby, or even C# from what I hear. C is a really well designed language, but it is very unforgiving -- and it wasn't designed for everyone to use.
I don't remember where I...
If you still look young, you can just sit in on courses in a top-tier college. Well, I'm still a college student, but I sit in upper-level and grad courses all the time. If you put in the effort in a long period of time, you'll see the improvement in your programming skills.
If you want to...
I altered the Zalman (by bending the top coils to the side; it was originally in contact with the PSU) so it could fit in more properly right underneath the PSU and I'm getting idle temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius. It's a considerable improvement and the Zalman I believe is closer to...
