Yeah, I had seen that Corsair drive on Newegg as well. How long have you been running it, and did you make any special optimizations to run it? I managed to kill a cheap Kingston SSD after a few months so I'm a bit leery. I think it was probably journaling that did it in.
The modifications you've made seem great to me. One question though: is there a better option for the system drive? I use less than 10GB on my root partition for the operating system, and I want to keep it off of my data arrays. Should I look into a small hard drive instead, or perhaps a...
Yep, I can do that!
EDIT: Also, did some research yesterday, and here's a preliminary build I came up with. The PSU is out of stock, but that's not an issue right now.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Home server, needs a bit of crunching power for media transcoding and code compilation
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Maximum of $700, without hard drives, shipping included.
3) Which...
I ordered one around Christmas time, and it has made my machine absolutely scream. Bought this laptop in 2009, with the following specs:
Dell Studio XPS 13
Intel C2D P9600 @ 2.66 GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM @ 1333 MHz
Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB HDD
And after swapping the WD drive with a...
Hey everyone, I'm speaking with a friend right now who is starting a small game development business, and he is interested in a server for his small business. He intends to have it run Linux and host Subversion, Samba, and NFS for his business.
He would also like to add 4 HDDs to the system to...
Please, I beg that you consider building a second, low-power disk storage system instead of putting everything inside your main box. As others have pointed out, the typical ways in which a desktop is used would be hell on that many hard drives at once.
Your best option is to build an external...
I personally believe that you'd be far better off running Linux instead of Windows Server.
Advantages include:
- It's free
- Less intensive on the machine so it can focus on performing its actual duties
- Very well documented howtos to set up features
- Features won't randomly stop...
But you see, not everybody needs incredibly advanced filesystems such as ZFS. Sure, it'd be interesting to play with, but completely necessary? In my case, absolutely not. I'm a college students with minimal cash, four computers to serve files to, and only need a single, universal box to take...
Here's a thread where those of us who run Linux-based systems can show off our setups and discuss how useful and versatile they can be! In a forum dominated by FreeBSD, FreeNAS, and Windows Home Server, I think it's about time for a thread dedicated to Linux-based systems. These other...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming would be the primary use for this machine, as well as other general day-to-day tasks such as web browsing.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$800 at maximum, preferably after tax, but I...
Very interesting. I've compiled everything (with a few issues, due to everything being RHEL-specific), but I'm now missing a library called "libspl.so.0". Damn. Looks like I'll have to keep hunting.
This is certainly a neat project sub.mesa! I look forward to a source code release, so I could perhaps re-tool some of it for use with my Linux server setup. (Leaving credit to you in-tact in the source code, of course) :)
If you put the drive in an enclosure, and ensure that you are booting off your internal hard drive and not the USB device, the OS living in that hard drive will remain dormant, allowing you to pull files off as you please.
Surprisingly, it does not. Running Ubuntu Server on mine, it tears through the workloads I give it. I am thoroughly impressed by the Atom's performance, although I have never used Windows Home Server on mine.
Most likely, but it all depends on the actual hardware requirements of Vail. If...
I will be adding exhaust fans once they arrive on Monday. Temperatures are pretty great right about now, so I'm not too worried:
/dev/sdb: WDC WD10EARS-00Y5B1: 37 C
/dev/sdc: WDC WD10EAVS-00D7B1: 35 C
/dev/sdd: WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1: 34 C
/dev/sde: WDC WD6400AACS-00D6B1: 34 C

$399.99 - $50 savings - $50 with promo code EMCYSNW34 = $299.99
I bought one of these boxes about a year ago to use as a home...
I actually just performed a mod on my server today, and my temperatures dropped by 10C, even without additional fans. WOW!
My server is an Acer easyStore H340. By reversing the fan from exhaust to intake, and cutting the blue PWM wire to allow for maximum speed at all times, my temperatures...
I ended up buying four Yate Loon D14SMs today for my server and my desktop. :) I had considered the medium speed variant, but figured I should see what the low speed fans do first. Thanks for the advice!
Hey everyone, I'm seeking to buy two 140mm fans to add to my home server setup, as my hard drives are running very hot, thanks to summer finally arriving. I'm dealing with temps of 44-47C, which is far too hot for my liking. I'm looking to add one or two relatively quiet 140mm fans to my...
An SSD would be a wonderful choice, but at $120, it's a little more than I'd like to spend just to get my operating system off my data drive. That, coupled with the fact that I'd want to put the SSD in my desktop/laptop before server makes it a tough choice to swallow. :p
I've got three 1TB drives and one 640GB drive in my home server right now. The model is an Acer easyStore H340, with an additional 4-bay enclosure attached via eSATA, allowing for eight devices total. One of the 1TB drives contains both my operating system (Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS) and a fair...
Hey everyone, I've got a Linux home server running, and it currently has three hard drives (1TB, 1TB, 640GB). The current partitioning scheme is as follows:
Current:
* /dev/sda (1TB 32MB cache)
- /dev/sda1 - 8GB SWAP
- /dev/sda2 - 1GB /boot (ext4)
- /dev/sda3 - 20GB /...
The 720BE doesn't seem to be too shabby either, and it's actually cheaper than the 705e. The problem is that this machine is going to be a home server... which means probably no overclocking ever. I might even underclock the processor if I don't see the CPU load hitting anywhere close to 3.0...
Well the general consensus here seems to be leaning toward the Phenom IIs of some variant, so I'm mostly looking at the X3 705e still with the price only being a few dollars higher than the Phenom II X2 550 BE. If you guys really think it'd be possible to unlock the additional cores and make...
Hey everybody, I'm in the process of creating component lists to build a file server with... and I'm just now finally trying to lock down my choice of processor. I want something that's very energy-efficient (to facilitate this machine running 24/7 without a huge electricity bill), but I also...
Edit: At first I was skeptical about packing so many high power parts into a file server, but seeing the deals I could get on all that added power have completely turned me around. This looks great! Here's my current Servnerr-2 AMD build...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
- General purpose file server. I hope to run SSH, SFTP, VNC, uTorrent, Dropbox, Source Dedicated Server, Apache + PHP, as well as having this server run backup jobs for two other PCs in the home, as well as my laptop...
Hey everybody, I just got a brand new Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop for college in the fall, and I'd like to be able to take advantage of its HDMI-out capabilities. Unfortunately, the laptop doesn't seem to be detecting any HDMI cables or displays I plug into it. I'm not sure what the problem is...
Hey everybody, I recently got an old PC for free and I'm looking for a few little upgrades to make it a little more usable and useful.
Specs include the following:
AMD Athlon (Socket A) @ 1.2GHz
Motherboard model 8363-686A (Unknown manufacturer) - VIA KT133A chipset
128MB PC 133 SDRAM [3 RAM...
Heavy and cumbersome isn't really much of a problem, I just think I don't want anything larger than a 15" model since I know a buddy who got a 17" ASUS laptop, and it's a huge, hefty, battery-sucking piece of junk.
That being said, upon reading chaz9999's post, I looked into the XPS series, and...
I've been looking at options for a portable machine for college class use, and the Dell Studio 15 has caught my eye. It's relatively cheap, powerful, and seems like it would be a nice choice for general productivity and efficiency. I will be bringing my desktop PC with me to school (Q6600, HD...
Edit: After a quick registry tweak to enable Vista's AHCI driver... I'm back in business. Transfer rates and everything are just as fast as they were before, my drive is confirmed to be hotswappable now, and I guess I get Native Command Queuing as an added bonus! Neat!
For some reason, I think my SATA mode in the BIOS is set to IDE and not AHCI. Hence probably why I'm not hotswap capable! I will definitely check that out and report back.
And I'm just running a SATA to eSATA bracket on the back of my case, straight off my motherboard's SATA ports. Case...
Is there any method of getting an eSATA drive to just autodetect instead of having to pop open the Device Manager, scan new hardware, and then have it detect? It's not a crippling problem by any means... but it sure would be nice to know if such a feature exists.
Thanks!
