The Apple 30" Cinema Display is just $1799 right now. My wife uses it with her MacBook Pro for building ad pages in Quark, and I use it for video. I don't know about old technology (the guy on the link above mentions "old LCD modules") but the picture is super and it is totally quiet. Five stars.
