I haven't been able to play any current games for a while - mostly time constraints. My current GPU is so old, it just won't cut it had I tried. Today's current gen was just what I was waiting for but yall know how that worked out. For now, my current thought is to snag something used this...
I've recently moved from a house to an apartment. In the past, I had my main rig wired into my WRT610n router and ran laptops/iphone/tivo/etc via the wireless. Well, I've recently moved into an apartment and the only logical place to set up my computer is not anywhere near the cable input...
A buddy's looking for a low $ pc... hoping to stick close to $500. Will re-use his existing 19" monitor, keyboard mouse, etc.
He games on a console but may want to try a couple pc versions.......but nothing too serious. He knows he won't get a serious gaming rig at this price level...
Just a corp thing..... to be in compliance with "our" interpretation of maintaining security on client data. Basically, when they come in to audit, we have to evidence that we have one of the approved solutions installed on all pcs that access client information.
My office is one of 1000's...
drive encryption software needed
New standards at my company mandate that we ALL have some sort of encryption software on all of our pc's. Since my W7 Ultimate came with Bitlocker, and it's on the list of "allowable encryption programs," my pc is all set.
However, I've been asked to put...
I've built several pc's but never a server. I assume it's going to go together just like a home-use pc albeit with different parts.
I'm not quite sure what info you geniuses need ( ;) ) so I'll try to include everything.
We're going to run MS SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition for small...
Just to fine-tune a bit:
MOBO
$80 GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM
or
$80 (looks like the price went up) BIOSTAR TA785GE
-- the Gigabye has onboard ATI - I'll be installing a single Nvidia 8800GTS
PSU
$109 ($70 after rebate) CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX 520W
-- it's overkill for now but he can always...
Can't use that combo. I have to have a MicroATX mainboard since I'm going to use (hopefully) the original HP case.
I feel ya on the PSU though. I'll leave the mail-in to my buddy ;)
gottcha. thanks.
So WOW isn't THAT cpu/gpu intensive, or at least not so much that a modest cpu upgrade would make much sense......which means there's no sense in going with a board and slightly better processor (can't afford the ones that'd make a decent difference) .........which means...
Thanks Nurd, I like your idea better than my picks. I ran it by my buddy and he said either is cool BUT (doncha hate that word.....) he's not real likely to upgrade the cpu on his own down the road AND he's looking for as much of a bump up in performance NOW as he can get. I told him that my...
Buddy's son's pc "blew." The PS and the mobo are gone - I think/hope the cpu, GPU and RAM are ok. It's mainly a World of Warcraft rig with Ventrilo, some frame rate progs + game recording, basic music playing, surfing, online email and so forth.
It is/was: HP a1630n
chipset: GeForce...
Dimension 3000. I'd assumed a mATX board would fit......
and I don't believe we're in ANY tier with Dell. This is just a small independent financial planning office with 15 employees. (the corporation we clear through is huge and they may have a discount -- i'll look into that)...
I didn't think I'd get as much bang for the buck with Dell... For about $300/box and a bit of leg work we'd have new machines for the secretaries/back-office staff. They use our contact management software that is pretty memory-hungry in addition to just needing some more horsepower for general...
I've been asked to "upgrade" 3-6 Dell office pc's. I hope to use the stock Dell cases. A couple months ago Danni Bui recommended the parts below which I managed to get into a co-workers e-Machines case so I assume they'll fit into the Dell boxes here in the office.
Before I place my...
just thought i'd follow up and say thanks...
went with the vapor-x and I'm in love. it's a great card, runs cool even with my low-air-flow case and rocks out on all my games.
thanks again fellas!
Thanks for all the advice so far! I should have asked this stuff a LONG time ago.
Cre3d, I have 1 more questions for you and one general one for anyone
What's the purpose in copying my whole appdata folder (prior to the reformat) to another drive? I assume it's to save my .pst's for...
Pardon my ignorance.... ;)
I'm with ya for the more part:
80-120gb partition for c, the rest for d CHECK
install windows, make and image (image1) and store the image on d CHECK
install drivers and progs to c / games on d CHECK
make another image with programs/drivers...
I realized I was hijacking another thread with my questions so I thought it'd be best to start my own thread. At first, like most n00bs, when I installed my os, downloaded music, movies and so forth, I just let Windows put them where it wanted. After losing a c drive or two, I realized that...
Those movie recliners look great and would match my current living room stuff perfectly.....and of course, I have NO cash now. bummer :(
here's a bump for ya tho. good luck
Lulz......always with the pics... ;)
truth is, I stuffed everything into her eMachines case and got to work copying her hd to my machine, reformatting her drive, reinstalling everything and so on. I wanted that one out of my hair so I could get back to MY issues -- like looking for a new...
Heh, well......I dunno about that! I spent a couple hours reading reviews and doing comparisons over at Net Builders like you suggested and it looks like I got a couple important parts right:
855 vs 825:
the 855 doesn't seem to be very well liked period by SmallNetBuilders and even less...
Sorry I didn't get back sooner to say thanks Danny Bui! Went with your suggestions and my co-worker loves her "it's soooo much faster" computer :) . Thanks a lot for the help.
Dumb question here but I need to know.... When you guys are talking about putting data and programs on a separate drive and so forth, are you saying when you install something (like a game, ms office, and so forth) you're choosing a separate drive (or partition) rather than the default...
First off, thanks to everyone (well, most of you anyway ) who posted in this forum and in the stickied thread above. I've been battling a Linksys WRK54G POS for far too long and have decided it's got to go. I was going to stick with Linksys based upon my OLD beliefs that D-Link's reputation...
I plan to water cool everything sometime this year or next.....and my case is a TJ07 that won't be getting replaced anytime soon <--- guess I should add that to my sig.
thanks for the advice though. ;)
All-righty..... I'm stuck between a couple options and would appreciate some input:
....bear in mind: air cooling, 1900x1200 resolution, not opposed to oc'ing the card
1. will 1 4890 be sufficient or should I go with 2?
2. which card(s)
a. $224 Sapphire - 1000MHz (I figured the price...
There's a Sapphire 4890 for $205 after instant, mail-in and HardOCP rebates: Sapphire 4890
-- the HardOCP rebate ends today. Usually I'd do a lot of reading before making a decision but given that I only really have today to move on it, is this bad-boy worth snagging?
--- I assume it'll...
I'm currently using a single Asus EAH3870X2/G/3DHTI/1G (with 4DVI video outs) with 2 monitors. Main monitor: Viewsonic VX2435WM 24" Secondary monitor: POS 17" or 19" (I don't recall for sure) generic el-cheap-o lcd display
My beef is that when gaming (COD4 and Left4Dead, for example) at...
Needed: motherboard (must be micro ATX to utilize current case), cpu, psu, ram (onboard graphics are ok for this one......no other parts needed)
What I have so far:
Option 1 - AMD
ASUS M3A78-EM AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX $79
or
GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 AM2+/AM2 AMD 740G Micro ATX...
You guys are always lookin for pics aren't ya? I didn't take any because I didn't think it was anything too impressive. I didn't do any case mods, aftermarket fans or heatsinks, etc. I did try to keep the cables moderately neat but that was about it. I even offered to do a mild overclock and...
Thanks Danny and Nurd..... bought the parts you suggested and everything went smooth as silk. That case is pretty darn nice (considering my only install experience is on a Silverstone TJ07). Thanks for the suggestions!
Will do that tonight........just for u! ;)
Re. the mobo tray cuts....... I STILL had to pull every pin for from the motherboard power plug (all 24 of them or however many there are - major pain in the ass given I'd never done it before) because I didn't want to hack a MASSIVE hole in the...
