A few years back I used an extra PII system for smoothwall. (I liked it, but I didn't think the firewall was any better than a common router)
pfSense is basically the same thing as smoothwall, right?
Would my network be any more secure If I just built a cheap little PC with 2 NICS and a switch?
Cool, I'll try and find some FAQs on more advanced security stuff (a link to a really good guide would be helpful), I really need to know proper network configuration and all that. Thanks for the help everyone.
Here are the specs of the two routers in question, they're about the same- but it...
The Belkin also cheap. 29.00 at office max yesterday.
how much do I have to pay if I wanna "step up" in terms of firewall quality? They all have pretty much the same NAT setup, right?
I've looked at various FAQs, but I'm still not sure
I would gladly pay a hundred or so more bucks for a...
Let's say I don't feel like spending an extra 15 bucks for the N, hypothetically.
The only difference between the Belkin F5D7234-4 and Linksys WRT54G2 is the latter having a 4 port switch, right?
Excellent. Thank you. I'll probably spring for the 160N.
What sort of extra usability will a 16mb machine offer?
What are the benefits of 3rd party firmware / extra memory?
Just speed? functionality? security?
Also, why is the security "about the same" on pretty much every budget...
Current Router:
Belkin F5D7234-4
Old Router:
Linksys BEFW11S4
Possible Replacements:
WRT54G2 ($30), WRT160N ($45), or whatever you dudes recommend.
I have the choice to replace my Belkin with either a WRT54G2 or WRT160N (both refurbs:cool:).
Q1: Does the 54G2 offer any security...
Thanks for the input everyone. The Audigy 2 ZS is not CPU dependant so it gives me a boost in gaming IIRC. Does the Realtek use the CPU? My preconception about onboard audio is that it uses the CPU for audio processing, but it's been a few years since my last system build... I'm a little bit...
I'm building a new system with this board. It's got an 8 channel Realtek ALC889A chip. I have an Audigy 2 ZS OEM board (8 channel) that I could move into my new rig, but I don't know if there would be any advantage. Should I do it??
Also my speakers are just a cheap 5.1 set from a...
You really don't need the wrist strap. They're pretty much useless.
According to your uses it looks like a pretty sharp build. If you're doing more gaming I would suggest going with an HD4850.
Since 800mhz RAM is pretty cheap right now you might want to consider going with 6 or even 8...
3dfx Voodoo3 2000 16mb PCI (you could broil a steak over this card, jesus. this was my first PC upgrade other than RAM. I was about 11 years old I think.)
Creative 3D Blaster TNT2 Ultra 32mb AGP (had this thing FOREVER. Kickass performance for it's day)
Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 (Kyro II)...
Thanks a bunch guys, I think I'm gonna take the dive and go with Vista. :)
Anyone with a second opinion could still jump in, though. I'm open to pretty much anything.
What do you guys think of XPx64? Better or worse than Vista?
Keep in mind that I could care less about the visual aspect of Vista. I don't like any of that transparency hoohaw and I'll probably disable it for a performance boost.
My primary objective here is performance and compatibility.
This is what I'm leaning towards. Then again, I want to be able to use all of my RAM. I see that a lot of people here (people with nice systems) are still using 32 bit Windows.
The FAQ pointed me towards Vista, but I'm still not sure about it. I have heard nothing but bad things about Vista...
Pretty standard specs on my new rig:
E8400 Wolfdale
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R
HD4870 512mb
4gb DDR2 1000
just over 1tb total disk space over 3 drives.
Originally I was just gonna install my current copy of XP Professional, but then I got to thinking: why not 64 bit? I'm a little bit behind...
4870 512/1gb seems to be the most praised on this board, along with the 4850 for budget gamers.
Haven't seen this much praise for an ATi card since I bought my X800gto a few years ago, not to mention my 9600pro prior to that.
Perfect time for me to build a new system!
I just bought one of those today for $249.99 w/ instore pickup
It's a COMPLETE POS. the worst fade i've ever seen. Using a solid orange background it's pretty much yellow at the bottom. Looks just like the gradient effect in photoshop, lol. Adjusting/tweaking does nothing to fix the problem...
I'm still leaning towards picking up one of these
Ughhhhh why do I have to be so indecisive when it comes to monitors? I guess it's because of all these mixed reviews for the 24" TN panels. Some people say they are fine, others say they are utter shit. I just don't know what to believe!
they will work yes
they're made for LCD monitors but they will clean any screen well.
any glass CRT screen can be cleaned with just windex and a paper towel
20", 21.5", 22", doesn't matter. I want to find the best picture for my money. I've lurked around this board for a while and I still can't make a decision. Maybe the 2007WFP? This is what I'm leaning towards.
I will be doing some gaming and movies on this display, but image quality is...
Explain to him that the picture he sees is made of of thousands of little dots. the more dots, the better the picture looks. you probably don't need to go into aspect ratios or any of that jazz.
up the size of the text along with the higher resolution. that's how i got my dad to start using...
Might as well keep this in the same thread. I was looking at this Samsung HDD with 32mb cache... I think it could be a better deal than this Western Digital. Any thoughts?
ALLLright I've pulled the trigger on the PSU (buy.com) and Case (provantage) and I've got a few more questions before I finish with my purchase:
Is there any advantage in buying THIS memory over THIS memory? Keep in mind my CPU is an E8400.
I would assume that getting the 8500 mem will make...
WOW nice deal. Too bad my office depot is 3 blocks away, my car is stuck, and I don't feel like walking all the way back through heavy snowfall with my new monitor
TY. I thought about driving to fry's today (that ram seems like a pretty good deal). It's a pretty long drive, and shipping is free.
I think I'm gonna go with this setup:
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
- OEM
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin...
what do you mean by b/m stores? sorry if this is a blatantly stupid question.
also, will this memory work with my mb/cpu?
http://shop4.frys.com/product/5754972
It says this is DDR2 PC8500... doesn't that make it DDR3?
It looks like there aren't too many great deals today
but...
F3 no question.
It was the first time in a few years that I've actually finished an RPG or FPS twice in a flippin row, back to back. First time since morrowind, in fact.
I'm already looking forward to Fallout 4
I was really looking forward to GTA4 being awesome on the PC.
User-created multiplayer shit, crisp, antialised visuals, and a smooth 100fps frame rate on my brand new gaming PC!
Merry christmas from rockstar I guess!
Yeah, I'm def. going with the LS-550. Thanks for the input. I'm also gonna pick up a WD6400AAKS. As much as I'm tempted by that E8400/4870 combo deal I think It's a little out of my price range. Maybe. How much of a performance difference will there be when compared to an E5200/4850?
I...
