I had her bring in the PC last Friday. The PSU is indeed a 350W, but the rails are 13 each for the 12+ and 12-. Also, there are not 6 pin connectors for GPU's at all.
So I am recommending a 500W PSU as well as the GTX750ti for her.
Thanks all :) Can always count on Hard...

No benchmarks, but I will say Everquest load time is now 1/2 on a Samsung 840 EVO vs WB Green 640.
Zoning times are cut in half or less as well.
Don't notice any FPS or smoothness improvements at all tho, so I can't comment on drive access while actually raiding or grouping.
The Samsung is faster, I'd put clone and keep it all on the faster drive. Sell the Crucial.
If something happens to the Sammy, you're out the OS and games, but you'd be out the games if installed on a 2nd drive anyway.
Plus, this way you don't have to worry about making sure you're always...
Sorry, just edited to add that I am running at 4.6GHz on the stock cooler. Well at least 2 boxing Everquest with maxed graphics, for what it's worth.
I'd love to push her as far as she'd go, so will look into what you suggest.
Recently purchased an i5 4670K with a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UH4d motherboard. Case is an Antec 900.
First, will the Big Typhoon even fit properly on this board/CPU?
Second, will it provide adequate cooling compared to new air coolers, or AIO water cooling systems?
The Typhoon was helping my...

Seeing as I am currently looking at upgrading to a GTX770 4GB ($355 PNY on Amazon), this thread interests me a lot.
For peace of mind, and a minimal price increase over the 2GB, would $GB be good just to have? Granted, it may not be utilized a lot, but a good hedge bet on future games?
I...
Thanks for this, might be a few hours too late tho :)
I stopped into Microcenter last night to "look around" and I happened to see the clearance table as you mentioned. So I ended up with a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H for $114 after the $30 combo discount.
For the price, a $229 board for $114...

The question, while vague, is what build centered around an Intel i5 follows my parameters/needs?
So for your recommendation, the 3570K is stout enough for a few years then move to an i7?
I see Amazon has a few Gigabyte Z77 boards.
3570K prices are used around $200-220, with a few auctions...

Thanks, appreciate the input as well as the what you would do.
Didn't think his GPU was THAT much better than mine, but okay. I know mine's a year older but thought it was stouter.
Looks like around $260 for FX-8320, MB and 8GB RAM cheapest. So have plenty of room to upgrade to better...
Well, since he's 13, I'm looking at cheapest. If I had to budget it, maybe $300-$350?
$150 CPU
$75 RAM (8GB)
$100 MB
Guesstimates. I'm more interested in suggestions like:
Best CPU is XXX, so I'll find the cheapest MB that fits it with 8GB RAM slots, for example.

True, I've been looking hard at the 530 and it's overclocking ability for a while. Something about the entry level chips being able to perform so far above their stock clocks...
Hence the e4300 at 3.4GHz I've run for 5+ years now. Trooper.
Nothing at all, but if I recall correctly, the 6950 or 70 won't be pushed fully by that CPU. I thought I came across a good CPU/GPU comparison when I was researching but I can't find it now.
Discount what I've said then, I have nothing to back it up.
Sorry, was thinking your CPU wouldn't need something that stout. But looks like you're planning on keeping the GPU awhile and upgrading the rest to it's level?
I found the 6850 was the best bang for buck, unless you score a decent MIR that'll bring the 6870 to it's price level.
I used this as a loose guide:

Lol, that was my paranoia speaking up as well the other night. The kids Xbox had a video failure after 6 months as well.
My PC has had no issues and it's plugged into the same Belkin surge protector as the kids.

I went ahead and bought a new mobo and PSU for $100 at Frys. Grabbed the Antec Basiq 500W for him, per the recommendation of the condescending sales rep there (didn't like the 8800GTX).
Also, sprung for a XFX 6870 for myself since I had to pass the 8800GTX down. $149 after MIR, from the Egg...
What is more common?
Since video tests get temp of your card, etc. can't they display voltage too? Any 3rd party program that can?
I'd like to see what it's getting and then move toward a root issue. I don't own a voltmeter/multimeter.
I thought about that, but it's got enough on the rails and plenty for the minimal components I have in the machine. Thought it was a reliable and decent PSU.
This may just be coincidence on older cards, but I gotta ask...
Kid's PC:
Asus P5G41-M LE
Intel E6500 dual core
2GB Micron RAM (not sure exact specs)
no sound card
Antec Earthwatts 430W
So at first I thru him my old 6600GT to start him out. Well, after a time, this failed. Lockups, crashes...
Also, I'll need new DDR3 RAM as well? Unless there is an i-core mobo using DDR2, but that negates the benefits of the new RAM and seems half-assed to do.
I'm not having problems playing Dragon Age: Origins or similar, so I'll keep saving the poker money and work on the wife's good side a bit...
Sorry, forgot that critical info...
Budget = $250. Nothing worth mentioning really, as it would net me a mobo/CPU without a video card. Or vice versa should I stretch it and get lucky.
PSU = I want to say it's 600W, Rosewill or similiar with more than enough juice to power what I have...
Got my hands on a copy of Win7 64-bit, and was thinking of upgrading before I tried it out. Specs in sig.
Was thinking of getting an i3 and overclocking it's ass off, but doubtful the 8800GTS 640 can keep up with the newer games.
Should I just install Win7 on the machine in my sig or...
Really nice setup you have there, thanks for the ideas!
Btw, using Panasonic ethernet-over-power-lines, love it. Though in the kitchen that may be more clutter.
Possibly install a Cat5 outlet in the wall (like a power outlet) and keep the ethernet thing in/under the cabinets?

I use the free Dell keyboards that come with their PC systems. We order 3 PC's a year for work and I nab a keyboard or two. They have a decent feel and don't take up a lot of space.
