Cool thread [H].
Didn't realize 1.5Gb was fine(most of the time), even at astronomically high resolutions.
Post pics when you get this rig up and running OP. My 2x23" monitors are overwhelming when gaming; can't imagine 3x30". :D
Hey guys, I still can't see spending $150-200+ on a midrange SSD and was wondering which of these drives would make the best boot drive? Also, would there be a noticeable speed increase in load times from my current 7200.10?
Uses: Mostly gaming, web surfing, and that's mostly it.

Might just buy a 1TB WD Black or F3/4 for cheap and hold off until SSDs are a bit cheaper. $200+ for 120gb is too expensive for a college kid.
Thanks for the replies guys!
$250 for each max, maybe a touch more if the jump in quality was good.
I would like IPS, because I don't game too much and am reading many page PDF files and/or surfing the web a lot.
1080p is fine. It's still a good jump in resolution(15% more I think), and would double the desktop area(2...
Really? I was under the impression that OCZ was a top tier brand. Guess Crucial, Mushkin, or Corsair are the best options?
Very cool, I thought it had enough headroom too, just wanted to double check.
Any thoughts on the monitors?
Thanks.
Hey guys, I am still on the fence on whether or not I should buy a few new parts for my rig.
So far, my current rig is in my sig, and I have a single Samsung 216BW monitor. I really want to grab 2 monitors for the extra screen real estate, and maybe a third for eyefinity in the future...
"This particular unit doesn't appear to be available in North America right now. What about the Cougars listed at Newegg, you ask? Well... they aren't really the same thing. What we're looking at here is HEC's actual Cougar brand name, not the HEC Cougar units you can currently get at Newegg...
I got it for $30 on Amazon the other day. Single player is not bad, not sure about Multiplayer though. It sure is not a $50-60 game, but for $20-30 it is priced right.
With High Res Textures and DX11, the game has plenty of eye candy. Graphics are at or above those on Metro 2033.
Cool guys, thanks for the replies.
I will most likely just add in a 6450, the cost per month for my city(0.08 kwh, last I checked) costs $5-10 a month depending on usage. That is not bad at all.
I would use Netflix if it was worthwhile. hmm
Hey guys,
Been interested in making an el cheapo HTPC that I can play/store movies and Blu Rays on for awhile now.
Was wondering if this would be a decent system for basic HTPC and/or Server tasks:
- Win 7 64-bit professional.
- Intel C2D e6420 @ stock speeds, so far.
- ABIT QuadGT Mobo P965...
I am considering buying two LG 23.1" IPS monitors and selling my old Samsung 216BW monitor.
What would y'all think a good selling price would be for my roommate? He's mentioned maybe buying it..

Hmm, well, my old setup(8800GTX, C2D e6420, etc) ran well with it...
The power drain on a 6870 is 151w max. So:
151 x 2 = 302 watts total draw.
The power draw for an 8800 GTX was 315 watts max.
I'm also running more power efficient CPU and RAM.
Guess I'll grab the GPU asap, then...
Kind of wanting more power(and dual 23" 1920x1080 displays :D) and can't decide what I should do.
Would adding an additional 6870 be the best bet? The same one I have can be had for ~$180 AR on newegg.
Or, would buying a card similar to a 6950 yield better results? A 6950 can be had for...
