The 6970 makes games run a treat. I've got a 6950 1gb and it makes my games run quite smooth (I'm playing 1600x1200- so didn't need the extra headroom). I'm a long time PC gamer, but I tried console gaming last generation. It's just not the same. Back to the PC now.
Not sure if it's worth it to you, but you could use something like this to fix your issue:

I think there is a known issue with the 6xxx series on the NForce boards. Maybe the problem was with the 6950 only. I don't remember where I read it though. If I find it I'll post back.
I got one of these. It really helps me:

I'm using a AX750 with 1x6950 and 1x5830, and 1x 400gb 7200rpm hdd on a 780i w/a Q6600 at 1.4 volts. It consumes ~450 watts according to my belkin power measurement device. Hope that helps.
BTW, why the heck are you using a 6 core in an HTPC?
I haven't had an issue like this in quite some time, but it does happen sometimes. I had a Pentium Pro that would reboot if I installed a sound blaster 16. No matter what. Drove me crazy. I had to go buy one of the first PCI sound cards because of it. Glad you were able to get the budget...
Buy an h50, h60, h70 or h100 and overclock the snot out of your cpu. Then we'll talk about upgrading you graphics more. Oh, and get a better screen, too.
Not only the clock speed boost is going to help though, you'll also get the benefits outlined in previous posts (having 4 cores instead of two). You'll see a rather nice performance increase.
A company can become virtually invincible if they legislate themselves into business and can engage in predatory pricing. The barriers to enter the processor market are tremendous. The only reason that AMD remains competitive is because they have won lawsuits allowing them access to the x86...
I can understand the sentiment about the Q6600. Had a Pentium Pro 180mhz back in the day that overclocked like nobody's business. My Q6600 G0 isn't the most fantastic overclocker, but that's partially due to being stuck on a 780i that has a ton of VDROOP. I did decide to my Q6600 a few months...
The H100 is supposed to be WAY better than the H70. If I had the loot, I'd go for the H100. That said, my H50, despite being smaller than the H70 was the only way I could get my Q6600 G0 to 3.6 ghz with reasonable temps in a cramped case. The H70 isn't a bad choice, it just depends on how crazy...
I've had the reverse problem-- an hdd that fried motherboards. Took out two motherboards and a tivo with a hard drive before I figured out what the problem is. Definitely don't rule out the motherboard yet. Starting with a multimeter on the PS is a great place to start. Were the drives you fired...
I've done a board swap to an entirely different board in Windows 7 and had no issues. My experience with XP was not nearly as smooth. What version of windows are you using?
I second this. Make sure that you have your memory forced to DDR2-800 settings and see what happens. You might also try using the official bios and seeing if it will boot.
Don't bother with this in a server. If you really want to buy an APU, get the Zacate cored E-350. It's $130 for board + cpu and the ASUS board has 2x PCI-e and 2x PCI. Plenty for a server, and nice and small.
Bought two of these and ended up only needing one. Stock is 2.4ghz, but the other one I've got will do 2.8ghz on stock cooling and volts, so 3+ghz with a good motherboard should be easy. Stepping LBBLE 0524FPAW.
Looking for $120 shipped.
Heat is under elph
the PVR-500 has dual tuners on it... some people have reported it's much louder than their other cards, but this shouldn't be an issue for you since you'll only have the one card.
The Celeron D is a better choice because it has SSE3 and a lot of media center related stuff benefits quite a bit from it, plus the heat is way lower and ghz for the buck is also a lot more attractive.
It really depends on what your budget is. It sounds like you want to be able to watch your tv, vcr or dvd player and probably have something being recorded at the same time. You'd need at least two tuners. If your video sources are analog, I'd definitely consider the PVR-150s being sold here...
