so help make my rig last another 6-12 months

Get 64 bit disks for sure. Otherwise you are hitting a RAM ceiling.

    Is it worth it....

If your monitor has both DVI and HDMI available you are fine using DVI<>DVI cable. If your only choice is VGA (blue plug) or HDMI on the monitor side then you would be better off using the DVI<>HDMI cable. 22" monitors generally have crappier panels than 24" panels. You might need to change...

    Core I7 vs. Wolfdale/Yorkfield

I just built a totally awesome machine around a Core 2 Quad. My CPU was the Q9550 which I believe offers an excellent price/performance ratio if you aren't interested in overclocking (in which case you'd go with the Q6600). I'd wait until Core i7 becomes a more mature technology. The boards...

    Gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3P motherboard

Wow I would be pissed if it doesn't allow 5.1 through the optical. I'm about to buy this board and also interested in learning.

    Awesome gaming display(s)

Any 24" LCD would be nice. The space you get is a bit less than with two 19" LCDs, but if he primarily games then two 19" LCDs is just a waste. 1920x1200 is a bit much for his card to drive. He could also step down to a 22" LCD if money or resolution is an issue.

Best Case for around $125 (lian Li, Coolermaster, Antec.....)

The Plus II has the reverse ATX motherboard layout. It essentially puts the motherboard in upside down. Supposedly this offers better cooling.

    Potential new build around $1000

Thank you for all the replies everyone! I haven't built a new computer for myself in probably 3 years now so this is long overdue. Make sure you catch that I have a total of 8GB of RAM for $100. There are two sets of that G.Skill 2x2GB pack. I saw some quotes with only one. A modular power...

Just like Type-R stickers for your car!

    How does this build look?

You don't need the Rampage motherboard. Any P45 chipset would work fine. The P5Q Pro is nice as is the Gigabyte P45 series.

    Potential new build around $1000

No overclocking whatsoever. From what I can tell you just increase the heat load on the system and end up paying for it on your power bill.

    Potential new build around $1000

I'm more concerned with getting the best price/performance out of whatever I get. The case is something I'm almost set on. I could move down to one of the Lian Li cases in the $200 area. I'd rather not spend more than $300 on a graphics card. By gaming I mean stuff like GTA4, Starcraft 2...

    Potential new build around $1000

Far Cry is included I just didn't bother to list it. The nice Lian Li case is because I want a nice case I can use on future builds. I've previously used Antec SOHO style cases but think it is time to move to something else. I don't want gawdy - just want a nice clean case. Power supply is...

It doesn't have very good reviews on Newegg.

    Expanding Linux RAID5 array

I haven't done this in a while but I believe LVM is what actually allows you to expand it later on. LVM isn't required for just regular RAID though.

    Expanding Linux RAID5 array

You will need to use LVM to do it. Do NOT put your OS on the RAID5. That's only asking for trouble. Use a cheap 80GB drive for the OS. There are plenty of guides online for expanding the RAID5 using LVM.
