The sound quality of the realtek chips can be very differrent from one mainboard to another.
It all depends on how well implemented it has been by the manufacturer.
A well implemented ALC850 can sound comparable to a SB Live5.1.
Which really is'nt saying much. ;)
IMHO it depends on the motherboard manufacturers implementation.
The realtek alc650 is certainly capable of sounding better than SBLive.
I had both installed on Asus a7n8x the ac97 chip sounded better. On the other hand
my present motherboard is a MSI k8n the realtek alc850 sounds terrible...
I have 1 of those in my collection of obsolete sound cards.
SB16
SB64
SB Live 5.1
TB santa cruz.
AC97 is really not that bad it depends on the board makers implementation. The 1 on my MSI nf3 board sux its terrible. But I until recently had a ASUS nf2 (not soundstorm) and the onboard...
Thats exactly what I do in linux.
I run the TB santaCruz into line in of revo 7.1, Then the revo outputs to my pimeta and onto my headphones.
I only do this for quake3 based games since they do not support alsa drivers. Revo is unable to use oss compatability due to a mmap issue.
I am hoping...
@saturnine2
How does your maxed out PPA1 compare to PPA2? I am thinking of building one.
What about your M3? what happened to that?
IIRC Mister X said that PPA2 had superior sound quality. (M3 has less parts...)
This thread really caught my attention.
The 'sennheiser hd-201' + 'turtle beach audio advantage micro soundcard' combo seems to have it going on!
Anyway it cant be bad for 43 bucks!
I read a bunch of threads over at headFi on the revolution5.1.
One of the guru's, glassman I believe his nik was. Said something along the line's of.
- With some modification the onboard headphone amp could be equal to a cmoy.
He goes on to list the neccessary mods. (sound kinda complicated.)...
I just got the headphones. No one gave input so I bought them anyway.
They are the 120 ohm version. Which perhaps could do with an amp. Sounds a lot better than my HD 500 and HD 497 :)
Anyhow the revolution 5.1 is yet to arrive. :(
I have just ordered a M-audio Revolution5.1 to upgrade my ageing santaCruz.
The question is in 3 parts.
1. I have found an e-tailer in Spain whom sells sennheiser HD-595 for 120 EURO incl tax.(146 USD)
This seems like a steal. I e-mail'ed the to verify the price and they said its...
Listening with senn HD-497. MSI K8N neo (realtek alc850), The sound is terrible. Santa Cruz sounds a lot better.
There are better implementations I had a asus A7N8X non delux (no sound storm just realtek alc650). And it did not suffer from as much noise as MSI board.
I'm in the same boat, I agree with what you have just said but my 3400+ CO clawhammer is well over a year old I'm itching for a change. Its not a excellent clocker 2400mhz prime stable 24h. 2500mhz superPi 32M. Max OC 2600mhz.
I want to play with something else...
Check ou this article its in the line.
