Nice "how-to"!
Since you know exactly which hooks need building, and how to do them fairly painlessly, your method is superior to a complete rebuild of WIn2k by several orders of magnitude!
I've just flipped back through my Win2K collection of Release Candidates, and I can't for the life...
They have one, the 840.. But it's over $1K for the chip. And it's only an 800 MHz FSB at 3.2 GHz.
Sure you don't want to hold out for the 1066 FSB version?
Many people use the generic term Win2K to mean either of both versions, much the same with WinXP. Since I saw you invoke the "Pro" part, my assumption (my bad!) was you were referring to Win 2K Pro.
When I see references to Win 2K made in generic, it's generally a hassle to try to figure out...
Hyperthreading is like having a Significant Other that can cook. The cooking part generally doesn't get in the way of doing other stuff, but if there is a cake in the oven, it can tend to put a kink in other activities.
Dual core is like having BOTH a cook AND a Significant Other. You can...
If the price point is the same, and you are planning to upgrade at a later date, you may want to consider that the 6xx will probably retain more of its value than a comparably priced 5xx when it comes time to sell off/trade in your old chip.
And it would be easier to palm off on someone...
Sorry, that's just not accurate. Win 2K Pro has *always* supported dual processors, and Microsoft fully and officially supports that application. That's why the license says "1-2 CPU" on it. My old VP6 server runs dual P3s on Win 2K and has for many MANY years now.
Win 2K *can* handle...
Dual core and hyperthreading are two distinctly different things. There should be no problem for Win 2K Pro to deal with dual cores, as the system was designed for SMP systems.
As to hyperthreading, if you want to enable it in Win 2K Pro, you have to do a complete Windows installation from...
I have a minor technical query. On your tuck-and-roll, did you use leather or vinyl? If vinyl, do you think there would be electo-static issues with dry air moving over it constantly? Did you make provisions for static to be discharged through the case?
Your artistry is awesome. "Awesome"...
I don't know how I missed it, but I overlooked the vinyl graphics.
Apply the graphics AFTER the enamel and BEFORE the top coats.
Or show the graphics to that hottie from the Nail Shoppe and ask if she can do it.
Better with her airbrush, that is. Who knows, you might get lucky, and...
UV (Ultraviolet) is "black light" by definition. If you have something UV reactive, then it will "glow" when in the presense of UV. When the UV is off, the "glow" goes away (it's not like the radium on a watch dial, it will NOT continue glowing when the UV source is turned off)
"Flashing" a...
If you want it, then get it.
If you're looking for peer approval, you may have a bit of a wait.... Be patient. I'm sure there is someone out there -- somewhere -- that is going to say you are "Doing the Right Thing."
The whole right-wrong concept plumb evades me; I wish I could give you...
I've painted a bit over the years, mostly airbrush work on vans, that sort of thing.
I'm probably covering old ground here, if you use the Search tool, you can probably get other opinions. I'll give my advice, which (as you know) is worth exactly what you're paying for it.
First, SAFETY...
Just a thought, in case you're not *totally* into the DYI thing.
Trot the case down to an auto shop that specializes in painting cars. They could probably sandblast it, primer it, two coats of enamel, top coat, and bake it for less than you might think.
I'd past on the rust-proofing...
Shut down, turn off your computer at the power supply switch, then unplug your powersupply from the wall. Wait a minute. Then plug in, turn on, and try to boot.
I've had the no POST issue happen to me on that particular board, and only a dead-cold restart got it going again.
Ah, I just...
Probably the IBM BlueGene/L at the moment. It's running about 36 teraflops or so, last I heard.
If you're [H]ard up for cash, there are probably some cheaper alternatives....
Nice work.
Are you planning on posting a schematic? Parts list with specs of the caps, trimmers, and choke?
Do you anticipate any RF or inductance issues with the long leads to the bigger caps?
Your close-up pictures are great.
And the move is on to 24 pin vice 20 pin, as we speak.
I was only a little tongue-in-cheek, because of the PATA classification as legacy. I don't see PATA going away any time real soon. At least not until they start cranking out some PCI-E boards with PATA plugs, similar to the old RAID...
All of my optical drives are PATA, there aren't a huge number of choices for SATA optical, and they tend to be pricy still.
You're not including AGP and PCI slots in the legacy list?
There are sometimes when you have to have two entirely different protocols running simultaneously. Or two different speeds. Or (God-forbid) one half-duplex and the other full dup.
Until we got cable wired into the neighborhood, I was on two-way satellite that required its own NIC, as it...
Just out of curiousity (and I didn't see it in your wishlist), which operating system are you going to be running? With that big old raptor, you could set up two partitions and run Windows (2K Pro or XP Pro?) in one, and your favorite flavor of Unix in the other, and still have tons of room...
I suppose ABIT has issues with some of its boards. My experience with ABIT has been nothing but positive, but I could just be one of the lucky ones.
I'm posting from an ABIT VP6 right now. It's been running 24/7 for about 3 years. I have to reboot about once a month because MS security...
I've been running this board for almost a year. No regrets.
Yes, the NB fan blew in the first 3 months (I run my machine 24/7) Actually, it died a whiny, agonizing death. Better than a sudden stop, I suppose. It's a *CHEAP* fan.
I got Thermalright NB-1C (if you get one, you need to do...
I was *just* about to order this combination (the 300 waterblock for the P5AD2-E board) when I saw your posts.
Has this been resolved yet? Did you get the http://www.koolance.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=162 775 adapter kit for the 300 block when you ordered it? Or was this the part...
