While the name “Mission S” isn’t what I’d call it, it looks pretty good except that panel line on the back hip. Looks good from lots of angles. I’d consider one when they drop into the low 200s used.

Drivers will pick the Porsche or other ICE equivalent over the Roadster because of vroom vroom even though they know the Roadster can smoke any production car out there.

I drive a Jaguar F-Type and its 0-60 isn't super fast for a sports car (4.4sec) but it looks and sounds soooo good doing so.

Buying a sports car depends on what you wanna do with it. Short term the Roadster will smoke everything on the road. Long term the Roadster will catch fire and smoke on the road. Plus, the Roadster in 15 to 20 years will end up in the junk yard unless someone finds an economical method to replace the battery? I'm almost sure the degradation of the battery will also degrade it's performance over time. My Porsche can still be worked on for cheap like replacing connecting rod bearings. Until car companies find a way to universally make replaceable batteries, then I would avoid them. I'm sure a battery is easier to replace when they all share a common standard size.

I wish my Porsche did 0-60 in 4.4 sec but automatic 928's are not known to be fast. My Corvette is a different story.

Trade 'em both in and get a Corvette Grand Sport X (ERAY), lol. I think the V8 hybrid is the coolest way to enjoy ICE and electric by getting AWD, sound, performance, and a quiet mode. The first 3 is why I bought my Jaguar F-Type, haha.

The Roadster, like all EVs, will also have terrible depreciation but the Rich Guy Goes Fast drivers who buy it won't care.

Which Tesla Roadster are we talking about? Based on history, you will be right.

On the other hand, your Porsche probably has less than 1/3 of the HP and no thrusters. ...but it also doesn't cost 1/4 of a million dollars.
Are the buyers of these cars going to even want to drive a 1500hp car in 15-20 years?

Do you really believe these new Roadsters will have thrusters? I hope people understand that was for show.

Why not? Putting in 1/4 of a million dollars for a car that probably won't maintain it's performance in 15-20 years is going to be a problem. Especially because people will absolutely beat on these cars like people always do with sports cars. The problem with luxury sports cars is that people can barely afford them. Once these cars have problems then they sit for years waiting to find enough money to repair them, but this usually makes the repair bill even worse because cars don't like sitting around. Now imagine the same situation with the new Roadster where the batteries will degrade if not kept up with charging?

The most impressive thing Tesla could do is make the batteries modular so it's easy enough that a local mechanic could do it, or better yet can be done in someone's driveway. If Tesla could give people a warning that Bank A is worn out and needs replacing, and I can just go under the car pull it with a go handle, then that would go a long way for ownership of these cars. The battery modulars need a go handle.

They didn't deliver on the previous Roadster. And there are some people, Marques Brownlee for example, who never asked for a refund on their $50k deposit. So, it will be interesting to see if those people get in front of the line for this version (if it ever arrives). The people putting up money know what they are getting into.
 
I'm not impressed with silly gimmicks anymore. I'd be more impressed if it had a reasonable price (for a sports car) and a decent range. As it is, it is a halo car that only the very wealthy will buy. What they really need is a sports car costing around $80,000 that you'd see all over the place, not a few hundred of the things you'll most likely only see in a few select cities around the world. If he'd delivered on what he promised years ago with the thing then I'd be far more impressed because at the time he was promising a follow-up car to the original with very impressive range (I think he promised 600 miles?). They ditched that for a gimmick to wow investors.

You aren't going to get a sports car with thrusters that does 0-60 in less than a second for that price. The target audiance is not the scat pack crowd. They aren't to be seen everywhere, as it is a product oriented toward people who can afford a car at that level of performance that typically wouldn't try to launch it in a school zone after the crossing guard puts down her stop sign.

I don't think enough people would be interested in lower end electric sports cars to justify making a model like that.

I still think it's cool though. Just like any super car I'll never have.

Lot of EV are lower end sport cars because the nature of those engine tech, Tesla more regular model (model S/X) in dual motor sport trim/mode would eat about any 1990s regular sport car, they have like McLaren F1/Ferrari F50 type of numbers, Chinese make a lot of those 35-80k range EV sports cars and the Corvette has a been a relatively popular sport car for decade, C6/C7/C8 starting msrp were around that today $80k I think or not too far off, it is not for actually well rich people, but for the well off and a "popular" price segment.

That's the point. Ditch the bling and bullshit and take a Model X chassis with more modern batteries and slap a "sports car" body on it. It would sell it droves compared to this thing. This thing is pure investor attraction, nothing more. I doubt it is even going to make them any money in sales. It will, though, make them investor money and stock price which is its only goal.

All new tech comes to those at the top first. The halo car tech of the 90s is outdated today. If thrusters somehow become a useful and proven technology through use from these people, it will trickle down eventually (when patents expire). If not, as I suspect, it will be a blip that someone tried. 🤷

Investors pay for the innovation and eat the risk.

The EVs that you're talking about aren't specifically sports cars, they're just regular cars that can go fast. And that's what I think most people that want a fast EV would prefer. They're good daily drivers, you can drive your kids around and get groceries, but you can also go fast. That's the kind of car I'm into. You can't do that with a 2 seater sports car.

I also don't think a lot of the people that buy Mustangs and Corvettes would want an EV equivalent. At least the ones I know have said they wouldn't want one.

The people who buy high end sports cars just want something that looks fancy and "cool" while they drive around town. None of them are ever used at 50% of their actual performance. I'd be shocked if most of them ever hit 25% of their performance. So, they could literally slap a sports car shell on a Model X body and the same folks who drool over this would run out and buy them. No, people aren't generally cross-shopping Corvettes with EVs but the people who would want an EV would consider buying a sports car EV if it fit into their price range.

But, again, the whole point of this exercise was just to provide some wank bank material for people, not to actually produce an EV sports car. When he first proposed the updated Roadster years ago his description was more in line with what I think he should have done but he's realized that he makes more money now giving investors stuff to drool over.

Same.. some of the newer generation of kids want them, but the majority of auto enthusiasts don't want them. They won't "sell in droves" until a large number of those younger people can afford them.

Looked like a marketing stunt car, and not the real car. Besides the car being heavy with all those batteries, I also doubt the government would allow a car to be sold with thrusters. Maybe to go forward faster? There's no way thrusters would be allowed on a production car. Imagine being behind one of these cars and someone decides to use their thrusters. A rock or definitely going to break someone's front windshield. It seems most production super cars hit a brick wall of 1.6 seconds 0-60, in which case the Chevrolet Corvette C8 ZR1X is affordable.

Correct. It's easily the biggest gimmick ever. Show cars are NOT production cars. There's a big gap between the two.

Yeah, lots of videos out there doing freeze frames showing different cars used for different stunts. Same stuff they've been doing in movies for decades upon decades. You specifically design one car for one stunt and then a different one for another stunt. Neither are actually useable as a car beyond the stunt. The rocket "flying" version won't even be capable of driving on public roads ... so purely a stunt vehicle which have existed for, again, decades. His is more refined, yes, because of the decades of rocket research at SpaceX, but still a stunt car, not a car you can drive on the road.
