New Tesla Roadster Up Close and Personal

Correct me if I'm wrong - but this technology could potentially help reduce major crashes. This tech could essentially be used as method for collision avoidance.
What, the hop? Only if there's someplace the Roadster can come down safely. You probagbly really don't want it firing off on the interstate when you come around a corner or over a hill and traffic is stopped with no warning and your normal response would be to stomp on the brake. It'd be terrible if you jumped to miss rear-ending someone and came down on a different car or a Jersey barrier.

You can see the absolute meltdown of Elon haters on social media with this announcement. As a car guy, this is one of the coolest things Ive ever seen. I haven't gotten excited about a tech demo on a car in... a decade maybe?
The car is wild, and I'm looking forward to how it fares in real life... I just wish there was a different CEO behind it.

The technology display is awesome I won't deny it. Adding additional downward force as needed would be good in cases of traction loss.

But if we don't see these thrusters in an iron man suit wtf is this almost trillionaire even doing?

Cybertruck, Hummer EV and Corvette E-RAY for me. All three had some amazing tech but the first two fizzled out sooner than expected and I ended up buying a Jaguar F-Type, lol.

It definitely got people talking, and grasping for straws since everything went pretty much flawlessly (can you imagine if it didn't, lol). I imagine the buzz is the point - just like with the Cybertruck, this is going to get the fans and the haters lighting the internet ablaze with commentary, hype and hate. I've never been a huge fan of the Cybertruck, even if I love the balls that it took to actually make the thing and sell it the way it looks now lol. But this...this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Wild that there's some defiant faction of tech geeks and engineers out there who can't just admit that it was one of the coolest things we've seen in our time. Yeah it's impractical for now, yeah it's expensive, but that was like the adult version of playing with Hot Wheels and watching Top Gun when you were 8.

Tech enthusiast forum post about cool tech.

Tech enthusiast: "I hate it because its not practical in use"

??
1 person doing 1 amazing thing is ok.
10 people doing 10 amazing things is ok.
1 person doing 10 amazing things is not ok. Every regular nobody feels the need to say "Ackshually, I literally have better ideas."

This is tech demo of merging SpaceX technology with the automobile. It's not just the thrust vectoring, it's the positional technology that is controlling the thrust vectoring.

The Ferrari F50 had a fan to create downforce in the 90's. That was a simple go faster = more traction. But in the case of the Tesla, it's keeping enough traction on the wheels to stay vertical at 0 MPH, but only as needed based on the attitude. In something that probably weighs 4500 pounds or more. It's like a "Fly on the wall" mode. The car then transitions from being upside down to then flipping right side up like a cat. That's not just thrust vectoring. That is understanding the position and orientation of the car and rotating, while keeping everything balanced.

Is there a practical application for this? Nobody knows. Because nobody has ever seen a car that isn't reliant on nature determining what direction the car is allowed to move.

It seems that Elon often finds himself in situations where he is doing the stupidest thing possible until the moment he does it, and then it instantly becomes the most obvious solution that everyone always knew was possible.

That's what most people miss, or put the blinders on for. "Rrreeee he's <insert name here>". But continually, the companies he's in charge of keep putting out ideas and products that are either market changing or world changing, even if it is only one small aspect of the product. He may not be the smartest or best engineer himself, but he has weird/crazy/smart ideas that he tells his really good teams to turn into reality, and provides the capital to do so. Even if something fails, it isn't the end of the world because business ideas fail all the time. Another business may come along and have a successful implementation of it, whereas before they may not have thought of it or even tried to implement it. Or what they learned does/doesn't work can be used for the next product.

I think the top trim is a bit over the top, but it was a great demo of just how powerful the thrusters are. I fully think the downforce vacuum is the impressive part. I want to take some corners in one of these things at least once in my life. Sure, 0 to 60 in >1s is crazy fast. Will make for some insane quarter mile times. If you get past the flying part, which everyone seems to be focused on, the real world driving benefits at speed are mind blowing.

Good marketing. Everyone excited for cool thing. The standard "base" models with out the gas, but with the handling features are going to sell. The trick versions are going to be fun to watch in videos. They nailed the look, the flip down lights the side control surfaces. The standard no jumping non flying base model is going to handle. I await the headlines in '28 "Evil Musk kills young star with flying car of doom" when X or Y youtube internet celeb kid wraps a non flying but still stupid fast roadster around a pole.

I'm not talking about jumping over a car, I'm talking completely maneuvering away or around a car to avoid getting smashed.

This is husband logic trying to convince his wife he needs this car, "it'll keep the family safe!"

I can't imagine it would be any better than stopping or steering. One situation would be braking thrusters to slow you in cases of lost traction.

A 4 or 5 point harness would save more lives than car thrusters.

I don't see how you could feasibly make this safe. It's like that Chinese demo a while go of ejecting batteries from an EV if they catch fire. What happens if there's another car in the direction your car spits 'em out? Bad day. Even if you just use the Roadster thrusters to kick the car in one direction (or brake superfast) you'd need an insane amount of testing to make sure you didn't hit another car. And let's not even discuss what happens to anyone who's not belted in.

2 situation do seem obvious how it could be safer, full on emergency braking and smoother rollover (full prevention or at least smoother fall) while downforce control can of course be use as a way simpler-straigthforward just be an always-everything has more traction benefit.

A bit like formula 1, maybe this after ~20 years trickle down into some cheaper-lesser format that usable tech down the line, battery and charging could get so good that there some extra kwh to be used and weight matter less.

Because a harness would kill more people than it would save. Harnesses are only safer in vehicles with roll cages where the human is wearing a helmet AND a HANS device. Anywhere else, a standard 3-point is superior safety equipment.

Gotta love the "It's not practical" crowd. Like 300mph hypercars are practical.
99% of the productions models sold. Will have no tanks, and no thrusters. :) But the guy next you for 0.5s won't know that. That dual cooled battery and dual rear electric setup with the movable surfaces and down fans is going to fly like no other production car. (on the road the entire time)

You know what would be cool? If the car was actually for sale. I remember hearing about this Roadster years ago and totally forgot about it.

I'm not a fan of SUV's. I actually don't hate the Cybertrucks looks, but instead hate how it doesn't function as a practical pickup truck. I do like the Jaguar XKR which are cheap because most people can't repair them.

You can reserve one now: https://www.tesla.com/roadster

they definitely nailed the look of the Roadster...the Cybertrucks are all ugly and look like machines...the Roadster actually looks like a cool sportscar (and it doesn't come with the self driving stuff)

I dunno I kind of liked the look of the original Roadster (I think it was called that, Tesla's first car) but hey different strokes for different folks.

Erm, Designed in Cupertino, assembled by Cloud Imperium Games? Just sayin!

In for the complete retardation from both sides. So far my basket is full!
No magic car you dumb F's.
Played!
Please offer the best you have to pursue your points.
Maybe scared mods don't even allow me to ask?
Mods choosing a side?

The issue with the Roadster in current form is the lack of side view mirrors. Automakers keep hoping the US .gov will make changes on side view mirrors, which they should because of new tech and aerodynamics that saves energy.

Screens in place of mirrors are neat, but I don't want more cameras and screens in vehicles. With how crappy/glitchy automotive software is combined with everyone stopping parts production after a few years, no thanks.

You can keep shaking your fist at it, but it's not going anywhere.

If the suction fan is used for tighter cornering, that means dynamic tire pressures? They might exceet rated capacity of outside front during a very aggressive corner while being assisted by suck.

Race cars already create enormous downforce at high speed cornering. Is there a difference? (Honest question, not familiar with this issue)

Yes, but suction fans increase it even further! If tire ends up 'underinflated' for certain corner scenario due to higher pressure on the tire, it might blow.

You can't have too much pressure in the tires all the time, because that will compromise optimal traction and overall handling performance.

With suction fans for cornering, tire load delta increases even further. Tire might be fine for straight and light corners, but end up 'under-inflated' for a heavy corner.

I apologize that I cannot explain my thought any better.

If you ever think like you've screwed up beyond repair, just remember that someone at Porsche decided to unveil their new sports car on the same day that Tesla unveiled a flying car.

They said the Nissan Skyline R34 was like driving in a video game. But if the picture below is how you drive in video games, then the Tesla Roadster will work very well for you.

The gas thrusters will be like a physical wall keeping the car from moving too much to the outside.

Call me crazy, but I think the thrusters aren't gentle enough for that. Rather keep traction and not hit the wall than avoid hitting the wall only to hit it a few seconds later, personally.

I'm pretty sure the ones interested in that Porsche don't really care about your gimmicky "flying car."
