You all have been good to me, and I have built many systems for my kids and family members with deals obtained here. I want to thank you all.

I am on to another adventure, though. My kid joined esports and he has a teammate that is no bucks and needs a bit of an upgrade (I don't ask about home life, only whether they can contribute). This kid currently runs an i5-6400; I have an Asus H370 mobo (from here!) with an 8100 on it and 16GB of Crucial RAM. I would like to try to find something like a 9600k from a fellow [H]orde member because that's the end of the line for this mobo and I don't want to throw too much of my money at it for something that I will probably never see again. OR I can source a used 12500T but I need a DDR4 LGA1700 mobo to put it in. Cheapest board on the 'egg is $64.

Is it worth the lift to LGA1700 or do I put the best CPU I can get for $50 or less in this mobo I have? I got off the Intel train after I built my 1366 system (because that beast lasted a decade!).

Lastly, I have a pile of old stuff but not much worth trading. That being said, it never hurts to ask if you are looking for something specific. I have a nice sub-MATX Gigabyte board that was my pfSense firewall with a G4400, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SATA m-key drive (not sure of health) that is on top of a pile to start with. I do need to fire it up and verify functionality but that shouldn't take too long if you are interested. I also have some loose DDR-3 DIMMs from HP and Dell system pulls, almost all 4GB. If you like low hour classics, I have a Gigabyte AM2 system with a low power CPU that was my wife's old computer she never used and I parted out. Pics available upon request.

I would prefer Venmo (have a balance) but can also do PPFF.

What speed is your DDR4 at? I think the 9600K maxes out at 2666 so Intel 12th gen would get you in to 3200+ which isn't going to be world changing but a nice upgrade.

What GPU are we working with here? Most non high end GPUs are not going to benefit greatly from PCI-E 4.0 and above but it's nice to have the option.

I hope the fella is at least running an SATA SSD? If not and he's running off an HDD, let's get him off that ASAP lol.

I have a 12500t which just completed a round trip across the US to help a [H] member update a board. I've been using it to test mobos since it's low power and all but would be open to pairing it with a spare B660M DDR4 board I've acquired to contribute to the cause!

Don't buy the H610 mobo off Newegg, that's a trash chipset and as much as we're all trying to survive AI apocalypse, some parts need to stay firmly in the basic office / library / front desk usage realm lool.

I think the kit included with the mobo I have is 2400, so fine enough for the system I am trying to put together if I stay 9th gen. He has a SATA SSD, so all set there in these times of dire prices, along with an nvidia 1660 of some type. I also have a 12500T from a failed Dell, but none of the good bits other than a small 256GB 2230 SSD. I was going to offer mine to the member you helped but you beat me to it!

2400 is pretty slow, I know I got a lot smoother gaming performance going to 3200 on the kit in my current system that I forgot to turn XMP on for lol. These days, it's very much dependent on the screen rez and refresh rate as much as the video game itself, of course. Also, I'm pretty sure 3200 CL22 is JEDEC spec for DDR4 so as long as the motherboard can tweak RAM values a bit and isn't too finicky (luckily DDR4 is so much less finicky than DDR5), you can get a "free" overclock for nothing more than some BIOS settings tweaks and don't let the CMOS battery run out / make sure to reconfigure after BIOS update.

GPU-wise, the 1660 is the most "affordable" nVidia GPU that still has driver updates so while it's not going to run anything on more than low graphics settings, it's service-able. I imagine they're purposefully running on low graphics to reduce clutter and get as many frames to begin with.

$50 for a 9600K keeps the budget in check and is pretty much drop in and hope for the best. I think if you wanted to give the 12500T a whirl, it would be an interesting exercise to -> unlock the power settings to allow the turbo 4.4 to run indefinitely instead of the default short burst, slap an affordable $20 tower cooler on it to ensure temps are kept in check, and test for stability on the board (preferably a B660 or B760 with stronger VRMs than an H610). Maybe make a little friendly team-building exercise out of it in terms of swapping parts and being very very very very careful with LGA pins when mounting a new CPU + showing the kiddos what the BIOS does (the amount of boards running from factory BIOS builds because everyone is too lazy / scared to update is astounding lol).

I have a small backlog of B660 boards (I think a couple Asus and an MSI) that I would be willing to forward along at cost to a good cause!

What is your overall budget? Shoot me a pm, I had a system I was going to try an unload on FBM but I hate selling there and if you can put the mobo/cpu to good use we may be able to work out a deal.

I've got a kit of GSkill 2X8 gig DDR4 3600 I could send over (0 cost) if that would help make a better system for him. Sounds like a used B760 would be the only missing component then. The B760 boards don't support OCing on locked cpu's though. PM me if needed where to ship to.

Quite literally $50 max. PVTGoose has mailed me an unknown function 9400F I am going to test out and see if it works, so I left this up just in case it is DOA or has other issues.

Thank you for that offer. If I stay on 9th gen, it won't be necessary. thelazyone22 and I had some interesting conversations regarding those locked down chips and I would really need to prove to myself it would even be worth it to try to game on it.
