iPhone 18 Pro And iPhone Duo

I upgrade every year. It’s not a massive cost for me given the trade in values on the pros historically. Everything said and done it’s only about $300 for me to upgrade, and Apple makes the trade in process very easy. I also get a 10% discount from Apple and don’t pay sales taxes along with the business write off which helps.

I thought you said a few posts back that you would not be upgrading this year and were waiting for the 20th Anniversary iPhone in 2027

Correct, I’m not doing it this year because the 17 pro is just so fantastic, I guess that was a misleading statement. I generally upgrade every year. The only time I haven’t upgraded was off the 11 pro for the 12 pro (12 pro was a garbage update and way worse physical design), and the 6 for the 7. The 17 pro is a very strong model year. That statement was more so indicating that upgrading is really not as expensive as people make it out to be.

I'd argue that this will be more important for many people than the variable-aperture camera. The new camera tech is meant for the "pro" side of iPhone 18 Pro: photographers and filmmakers who need more subjects in focus.

Everyday users will notice the performance in certain tasks and, more importantly, the battery life. My iPhone 16 Pro has always drained quickly, and on busy days has needed at least one top-up. Even the 18 Pro can last an entire busy day with room to spare. And this is without silicon carbon batteries.

The efficiency and longer battery life on the smaller 18 Pro is supposed to surpass last year 17 Pro Max battery life

And they also increased the performance as well

So these new phones are faster and better performing. They run cooler. And are very efficient with amazing battery life.

I'm not an iPhone guy cuz I fucking hate iOS but Jesus these are absolutely the best iPhones ever released. Yeah sure they look the same but internally they're best of the best.

Now I'm pissed at Google. The Pixel phones seem to get the bargain bin outdated technology. Whatever Samsung is tossing in the garbage, Google buys at discounts to make their Pixel's. We're on the 6th generation of the Tensor chip and it's still way behind everyone else. The GPU is dog shit. Battery life is mediocre at best. The displays just okay.

Only reason I go to Pixel is purely for stock vanilla Android and the Pixel UI.

One thing I do NOT like is the 1TB and 2TB variants now have QLC flash along with serious price hikes. The SLC cache makes it a non issue for what most use the phone for but long term endurance remains to be seen. Users needing that much storage tend to fill their devices with LOG footage and remove it. 17 Pro Max uses TLC in all sizes. 256GB and 512GB 18 Pro/Pro Max are TLC.

I'm not too worried as Apple likely determined if the long-term wear would be acceptable. That and filmmakers need space. If you're recording 4K ProRes video directly to an iPhone's storage, that's 7GB per minute. An extra 1TB of space allows for roughly 142 minutes more recording time. In short: if you're the sort who needs 2TB, you won't be too picky about how you get it.

On. this note: Apple may have chosen matte black for the sake of pro photographers and filmmakers. It reduces the chances the phone will be visible in a reflection, which definitely wasn't the case for the 17 Pro's look-at-me-ma orange.

the new Black color is not a direct comparison to the orange color from last year...the orange compares directly to the new Burgundy

even though I have the 17 Pro I think I'm going to still get the 18 Pro...my main reasons:

-2nm chip (A20 Pro)
-improved vapor chamber cooling
-variable aperture camera (I like the way it handles nighttime/low light shots)
-new C2 modem
-better battery life
-I love the new matte black color

I'm not too worried about longevity as I get phones all the time. And recording 4K60 ProRes requires external storage.
I guess my main beef is the $500 surcharge over last year's 2TB and using cheaper QLC.

I got my iPhone 18 Pro today...I would not have an issue using this for the next 5 years...let's see if the 20th Anniversary iPhone in 2027 lives up to the hype...sounds like a pretty ambitious design

It does but the wrap around glass is kind of a nightmare to protect. And I HATE microscratches! I guess a film type plastic protector over the main screen area like OnePlus puts on their phones will have to suffice.

I wonder if it's just going to be on the Pro Max or if the Pro and base model will also get it...and will it really just be a special one-year only design

A part of me almost wants to get a second phone, that'd be the iPhone 18 Pro in Black, and also having the Pixel 11 Pro in Obsidian, would be the best of both smartphone worlds. But I have zero other Apple devices, so there's no "ecosystem" for me, and I ask would the 18P even be usable or good for me? But then again I don't really use any of my Pixel phones for doing stuff beyond the smartphone, I don't pair it with my gaming rigs or anything else really. Or would I just quickly get frustrated being back on iOS, and complaining in my head it doesn't have this or do that like my Pixel?

I ended up getting the iPhone 18 Pro in silver after being on Android for a little over 3 years, upgrading over a S23. Briefly tried a S24 FE but returned it. I liked Android but so far I'm really happy to be back on iOS. The app polish is pretty unmatched and liquid glass feels really uniform and pleasant to navigate. The battery life is stupidly good. Being back on iMessage, Apple Pay and FindMy is really nice with my family. I have no other apple devices, so no eco system here and it works for me.

It's been a good while since you used iOS, so think of this as catching up. It's fast, it takes great photos, it should last a long while on battery (the 18 Pro lasts as long as the 17 Pro Max did). And Siri AI is actually useful, so you can use voice commands and smarter dictation if you're so inclined.

I'd be patient. It'll take a little while to customize, relearn some things, and simply settle into the platform. Pixels are awesome, but I'd honestly choose the iPhone simply because it has performance to spare.

Yeah, since the 17 pro in particular the iPhone is just on another level performance wise now to the point where Qualcomm may as well be near two generations behind in performance.

I can attest to this, I've been on my 18P for a week and it's stupid fast. Also the battery life is absolutely insane, it almost lasts 3 days for me, I'm albeit a light user but even with moderate steady use it's a 2 day phone for me. I can only imagine what the Pro Max can do.

I thought my S23 honestly had good battery life but it doesn't even come close to this 18P.

I set up my 18 Pro this past Tuesday but it's been stuck at 36% 'Optimizing Search and Siri' for the past 4 days

finally after 5 days the optimizing finished...I understand it's rebuilding the search index but 5 days is still a long time for a brand new 18 Pro

Ended up upgrading my daughter's phone from a 14 Plus to an 18 Pro since Verizon provided an offer to upgrade for $10 a month (phone agreement) while keeping my 5G Play More plan. I had almost enough Verizon Dollars to pay off the taxes and was able to get $840 off the phone this way. Luckily I didn't have to switch to some Ultimate plan. Without any type of promo or using the unlimited promo, they were only going to give me about $200. I figured this way she can keep this phone for about 4 years like she did her 14 Plus and down the road we'll hopefully still get decent trade in offers.

I pay for my Pop's cell phone, and he has a 14 Pro, so I may upgrade him too while I'm at it to an 18 Pro. I bet his battery is 80% or less by now. I know it'll be cheaper to replace the battery, but I figure after 4 years that's about the time to upgrade.
