RTX 5090 FE Molten 12VHPWR

So a fusible link? Or they could just make it so it doesn't require a sacrificial point of failure and use proper power connection. This isn't rocket science, we have existing manufactured connector options that can carry far more power through them without issue.

“Melting 4090 connector?

Tech Support

Page 1 (Current page)Page 2 Page 3
Item 1 of 3

I started getting some random black screen issues (sound continuing but no picture) with my PC after a couple of years and after troubleshooting I decided to check the connectors for my 4090.
Is this an early stage of melting on the cable side male connector? The plastic looks a bit affected around the opening.”

"ElmorLabs PMD2X Features Per-Wire 12v-2×6 Monitoring With Overcurrent Alarm

by Cpt.Jank Today, 16:17 Discuss (2 Comments)
The ElmorLabs Power Management Device 2 (PMD2) is a discrete power management device that allows tinkerers and hardcore overclockers to monitor their system at a hardware level and on a per-device basis. The latest update to the PMD2 is the PMD2X, which adds per-wire current, power, and voltage monitoring to the device's 12v-2×6 and 12VHPWR monitoring. The product's software component now also allows users to set up an audible alarm when individual wires exceed maximum thresholds, effectively allowing it to fulfil the role of something like a Cooler Master GPU shield.

In addition to the new audio alarm and granular GPU power connector monitoring, the PMD2X also features compatibility with Seeed Studio XIAO boards, allowing for wireless connectivity, although this will require more than a little additional work to set up. This effectively turns the ElmorLabs PMD2X into a safety tool that can be used in a daily driver capacity as well as for the hardcore overclocking and tinkering that it was originally designed for. The ElmorLabs PMD2X is available for $109 on the ElmorLabs official store."

this is why i haven't wanted or bought an nvidia card when thats like a 4-5 year plug quality and the ups having to be that good so it don't burn at full loads...all those cosco ibuypower prebuilts probaly have a similar adapter too...and no you right Nvidia is going to say thats a 3rd party cable and deny anything warranty like or rma and your sitting there left hanging with burnt dead card and parts...just no kinda some baddie builder stuff and we suppose to look Professional...just no I have 0 corrosion and don't even run my dual 8pin plug vega56 at full loads just in case..its thats both imo...but nvidia will not cash out on that or i blame them as a manufacture but they should come down on msrp on cards though cause of it...i hope people keep burning them i get me good 180-200dollar card deal.

Damn, I'm missing out on the fun since my release 4090 is doing just fine and my near release 5090 is doing fine.

My near release 5080 FE is also in the "feeling left out" club.
Cool. So out of 10? 4090/5090 owners in this thread, 1 had a blow up, and 1 managed to catch a blow up before it occurred. A 20% failure rate seems unacceptably high to me, but what do I know.

You assume the sample size is big enough, I bet you that here are 100 times more 4090/5090 owners not chiming in with no problems.

You are crying again, with zero arguments/data.
Let me help you a little:

Though I have a feeling based on your posting patterns that facts are not something you care about if you can get a good whine.
You aren't accepting any arguments or data. You're just waiting for Nvidia to admit they made a mistake with this connector and to provide statistics.
But that will never happen, simply because that's exactly their plan—planned obsolescence.

The sad thing about this whole situation is that you're defending them so wholeheartedly.

If anyone had one burn up here that's means it's a high failure point as we probably don't have 100 people with 5090s on here. So go back to Mars with that Nvidia sucking tit. The cable/connector is garbage no matter how you cut it and I truly believe most 5090s will fail given enough time and without checking on the cable.

Even with a fan at 600w my card on water. My cable was heating up enough to be hotter then my case temps on thermal. That's means it shit as a electrical connection shouldn't be 20f warmer then the air around it

If it was widespread, all the youtubers would e spammming vidoes, but that uotput is less than in the 40 series era, so keep ignoring facts.

EDIT:
Anyone here thinking that Steve from Gamers Nexus would miss a chance to blast some company of there was ANY hint of a major/minor problem is delusional and pushing a biased agenda or being a crying little b**ch.

It's a good thing we are all crazy and nothing is wrong with the cable to where every company and random moders are trying to fix it......
O wait
Nvm
It's shit and Nvidia won't fix or acknowledge it

If I had an RTX 5090, I'd likely mod it, too. Warranty's been useless these days.

It's still all being fed to a single header on the GPU itself, so I doubt that this fixes the core issue of current imbalance on the pins. The wires were never the problem; the header is.
He's added a pair of 8-pin connectors to a custom daughterboard. It sounds like he's also distributing the power from them onto additional points on the board, but he couldn't be bothered to show pictures of that or even describe the mod in any detail.

Yeah, you're right. From the reddit post:
The 12VHPWR connector is still used.......

There is a pickup PCB soldered to the contacts for the original 12VHPWR header and that feeds the auxiliary dual 8 pin board.
Theoretically, he could do the same thing using a 12v-2x6 connector instead of two 8 pins, if his power supply had two 12v-2x6 outputs. He's basically soldering a second header onto the original header.

Edit: Some quite dubious claims from the Reddit thread. "Partnered with PNY to sell this mod with full factory warranty." "Hundreds of kits ready to be installed." "Separate PCB that is soldered but is a reversible mod."

If Nvidia couldn't care less people are paying 5K+ for a gpu why would they care about a bad connector?

Like a guy paying 5k for a watch, do you really think he cares what time it is?

They could close the gaming division and I'm not sure they would even see it on the budget sheet with how much money they are making on AI.

The YouTubers ARE making tons of videos about it, showing the failures of the connector in great detail, including Gamers Nexus, which does more than just the single link you posted. Hardware Unboxed has a video of their own 5090 cable melting a few weeks ago, showing how it failed in great detail using the ThermalGizzly Wireview Pro to demonstrate how the current distribution was completely off, with two of the 16 pins taking essentially all of the current. Der8auer, from ThermalGrizzly, has also produced videos using ammeters demonstrating this. This means there is an engineering problem with the design because the current is not being evenly distributed even if you’ve ensured a properly seated connection.

On top of that, several power supply manufacturers have released special cables and units designed to help address the problem, which they wouldn’t do if the problem didn’t exist.

But you knew all of that.

And before you call me an AMD fanboy, I’m a long term Nvidia shareholder currently running a 5080. I’m a big fan of Jensen Huang and Nvidia’s tech stack. None of that changes the fact that this design sucks.

I strongly doubt Nvidia will let an AIB manufacturer fix a problem they refuse to admit exists.

My understanding, from what I’ve read, is that board partners have to use it. They are not allowed to use 8-pin connectors on a custom PCB. Why they’re not allowed to at least use two on a 5090 when they’re clearly redlining it is beyond me. You have 85W coming from the PCI slot and a cable rated at 600W feeding a GPU that, at times, will exceed 600W. There isn’t a good reason to limit the design to a single connector that’s already at its design limit.

The PCIE slot is rated for 75W max power draw for 12V. EVGA got in a bit of trouble a few years back because some of their 30 series GPUs were pulling more, and in some cases a LOT more. I even RMA'd my 3090 FTW3 Ultra because their VBIOS fix didn't keep the power draw under 75W and I didn't want to risk my RAID card / array.

I remember marveling at how little PCIE slot power was drawn when I upgraded to a 4090 FE, something like 8W, compared to the 3090. I still miss EVGA because their US customer support was second to none.

Yes, thanks for the correction on that. Only reinforces how stupid the idea is to have a single 600W connector for a 5090.
