“AMD Plans 10% Price Hike Across GPUs, Chipsets, and Possibly CPUs

by AleksandarK Today, 05:15 Discuss (16 Comments)
AMD is preparing for a series of price hikes in response to rising costs of acquiring silicon from its supply chain. According to ChannelGate, AMD is working on a 10% price increase across its products due to the upstream supply chain squeeze. Since most of AMD's silicon is manufactured by Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC, any change in wafer pricing forces AMD to pass these costs onto customers. Reportedly, TSMC is increasing the pricing of its silicon wafers, and as a result, AMD must raise its product costs to maintain margins and keep the business afloat. The price increases will affect almost every product AMD offers, including GPUs, possibly CPUs, and even motherboard chipsets.

For CPUs and GPUs, AMD has already implemented price hikes in the past, driven by a combination of demand and high DRAM pricing. However, this is one of the first instances where AMD is increasing the pricing of its motherboard chipsets, which will require motherboard makers to adjust their pricing accordingly. If TSMC implements a 10% price hike across its nodes, from 2 nm N2 to some older mature nodes, AMD will have to pass these costs onto partners and consumers, who will ultimately bear the difference. As a fabless chip designer, AMD cannot dictate or negotiate for lower rates for wafers from TSMC.”

Highly reliable rumors that 5000 Super series won't release, and any next line of cards won't release until 2028. With absurd prices already, MSRP of the 6090 will be $9,999.99.

You could be waiting a while for Rubin-based consumer graphics cards

Hardware leaker Kopite7Kimi, who has an exceptional track record, posted on X that Nvidia's RTX 60 series GPUs, based on the Rubin architecture, might not be released until at least 2028.

The leaker previously believed that we might see a new generation of graphics cards in late 2027, but now says: "Unfortunately, GR20x is a product from 2028. That means they have postponed again."

We reached out to Nvidia regarding the post, and a company spokesperson stated that they "don't comment on rumors or unannounced products."

Still rocking a 2070 I bought used from a college kid. I keep watching the used market and laugh at the ads I see people trying to sell their PC's. I can certainly pick out the type of person they are from their sale ad top picture. The best finds are the sleeper PC's without the RGB washed cases sold by someone over 45 - as surprise to no one here. Snagged a few I resold to friends so they don't get ripped off.

The amount of people I see taking loans out for PC hardware is frightening. Then the people that bury their PC's under desks with crap stacked on top of them wondering why they have heat related issues.

So glad I ditched gaming for other activities but I do feel bad for those that need gaming to survive the world now. I get it, distractions are invaluable these days.

None of this should be surprising to anyone at this point.

I hate saying it, but there really is very little business reason for Nvidia to make gaming-targeted products when they can't produce enough of the workstation stuff that sells at orders of magnitude higher in pricing. This doesn't surprise me at all. Even if they launch a gaming card, it'll get snapped up by AI guys and prices will skyrocket. I even see 5060 Ti listings with AI performance advertised.

I had a chat with a guy at a local computer store when I was picking up a motherboard for a PC I was building for my son (I had spare RAM and a spare GPU, thank the Lord). I asked him how business is going, he said it's fine, just a different type of customer. You either get gamers at the ultra high end who aren't price sensitive anyway, or guys doing AI stuff at home. Doesn't surprise me entirely, but that's just the state of things now, unfortunately.

Ok, I'll bite. Who builds something like this?:
PXL_20250424_000559469.jpg

Is that a big deal or something? I had tons of Noctua fans in the past. Looks like a SFF quiet performance build. I use to do something similar, but with custom watercooling.
No, it's not a big deal at all. I was asking That_Sound_Guy who builds a rig like this because he said he could pick out the type of person who builds a rig based on a picture. So I figured it'd be fun to post my rig and see what he comes up with.

Ah, lol.

Yeah, He's trying to see what I think about the person selling the PC based on the picture per my comment.

Based on your picture and if I saw it on FB marketplace - It's a straight on shot, with detail/high res, and clean wire runs. It's also obviously custom built based on the fans, motherboard, color matched RAM, Fractal case and AIO. No dust bunnies, no spider webs, fan blades aren't caked with years of buildup. Only mark of question is the hole cut in the grill on the bottom right. Shows hurry versus doing the job 100% as the cuts are uneven with jagged edges. So things like thermal paste, fan filters, etc may be suspect. I would assume two things - You're either an enthusiast who built the PC and takes care of your stuff while showing it with pride for a potential buyer to see what they are looking at. Or, it was built for you and you're just a person who takes care of their stuff while showing detail for a perspective buyer. I also don't think a brand-new build as the fan blades have what looks like a dust layer as one would expect from operation. The hole cut is also not in use suggesting potential case reuse or change in design. Further reinforcing enthusiast. Given the type of PC you have, I would not contact you as you have a high likely hood of knowing its value and asking for it. You represent maybe 5-10% of ads I see. If it was a prebuilt with that type of quality picture, it would get my interest to click for more info. Of course, the price listed in the ad drives a lot in initial interest to the PC.

The profile pic of the seller
What else is the seller selling
Title of the for sale ad. "Gaming PC" versus "12th Gen I7, 32GB, 3070 Computer" versus "need gone"

I can get a pretty solid idea with that data group. Now if I saw your PC for sale here in [H]? You have expensive quality components in addition to everything I said above. Been around a long while, high post count, general curiosity with the question/challenge you sent me, 2FA...; I would buy from you.

I'd probably let that slide as it was obviously done to reduce the risk of the cable and 12VHPWR connector burning up - it shows an awareness and knowledge of issues. It also won't show with the case cover on.

anyone ready to pay $$$$$ for a GPU ?

It could happen, but I'm betting against it. They typically release after NVIDIA releases their next-gen. The only way I see this happening is if NVIDIA releases their 5000 Super series, then AMD releases the RX 6090 XT. If AMD does release the RX 6090 XT as a professional card, the memory will have to be at least 24GB, and it'll likely start at ~$5K. Either way, not good for us peon gamers.

Rumours I read were that AMD will launch something next year that competes with the 5080. If that's the case, Nvidia's in no rush to respond, because they have nothing to respond to.

What's even more insane to think about is the fact that the 4090 remains the second fastest consumer card despite being being 4 years old now. When I started building PCs, 4 years was a generational eternity. A 4 year old video card would be barely functional on the high end at that point with a few notable exceptions.

I wish AMD would compete ate the high end.

that rumour is right in terms of a gaming card

however AMD also has a chungus card for xcloud / hyper scalers

if (& if) that card releases for prosumers (with 36+gb vram) it will cost maybe $5000+ but also obliterate the 5090

from what we know about 3 decades of nvidia, losing the bragging rights is a strict no-no for JHH

So there could be a paper launch of 6090 (founders edition only) to wrest back the bragging rights

Ah, fair.

Nvidia's pretty far ahead at this point. If AMD actually has something competitive at the high end at this point, I'd love to see it, but I doubt it.

So this guy has been saying based on deployed GPU capacity, that there is an incredible amount of Blackwell server GPUs sitting in warehouses. So they destroyed the market for memory, GPUs and electronics for a scam.

https://www.wheresyoured.at/wherere-all-the-ai-chips/

The demand for compute is real. The customers have said so. Companies like Microsoft have stated that power remains a constraint on how much compute they can currently deploy, but I reject the notion that the demand isn't real.

The author of this article is a noted critic of big tech and AI in general. That doesn't immediately discount anything and everything he says, however, if there's one thing I've learned in all of my years learning about business and financial markets, don't listen to what the talking heads and analysts say; LISTEN TO WHAT THE CUSTOMERS SAY. That's the key. The customers are telling you the demand is real. The customers are telling you AI is making a difference for them. The customers are telling you they need more compute, not less.

Are some overbuying? Possibly. I think once Sam Altman announced he was buying 40% of the annual productive capacity of RAM, a lot of companies reacted with big orders knowing they're also going to be in need of memory, but those companies have also said the constraint remains two things: power and compute capacity. They have not been reporting they have a surplus of either of those two things.
