RTX 5090 FE Molten 12VHPWR

did anybody else catch the part in that video at 11:03 where some guy managed to swap out the 12v2x6 connector on a Galax HOF 5090 with 3 8pin pcie connectors and did liquid cool it, but got it pulling 900w with no problems or meltage?
Putting one what amounts to a soldered wiring harness to the 4090/5090 with female 8 pin old school plugs only addresses part of the issue as the voltage regulator phases still are not split.

Given the value of these cards, I'm imagining a lot of 4090/5090s with pigtails in the future.

When Gamer Nexus said that shit I totally stopped watching. I would bet that like 99% of the people who buy 5090's are enthusiasts. The chances of this group of people not knowing how to plug in a cable, while funny, I think would be rather low.

is working successfully for over a year and the dying after being road hard at 613+ watts solid (no peaks or valleys and not just a spike) somehow user error?

i fully inserted it to the point of clicking and observed no gaps

They pretty much pick and choose fights. That's clearly one they don't want to chase. Maybe too many of their team green fanboys would eat them alive if they went after the cable. But chasing Nvidia for selling cards under the table to China through Singapore and Hong Kong gets their green fanboys on side since it's cards that could have been sold to gamers.

Also your failure type is exactly how I see most dieing as that's how weak electrical connections die. They slowly get worse with each heat cycle till something melts

Not seeing many cards dying. Sure, it happens, not that much on reddit or the other interwebs to concern me at all. My launch 4090 is still doing well and my almost launch 5090 is still doing well just like almost all others. Shit happens but it doesn't mean things are going to burn down a house. Oh yeah, no houses have burned down.

Obviously, you haven't seen the FUD around here or on the interwebs. It's also obvious you haven't seen all the eight pin, four pin and PCI-E cables that have burned in PC's. None of this is new.

Cooler Master officially launched its GPU Shield Adapter in the United States a few days ago. Initially, the product came with a one-year warranty, as stated on both the website and product packaging. However, Cooler Master has since reached out to confirm that the company is extending the warranty coverage to three years. This is a significant improvement, as the adapter is designed to protect the controversial 12V-2×6 power connector found in NVIDIA and some AMD GPUs. The GPU Shield first appeared in China in August with a three-year warranty, and this extension is now being applied to the North American region as well.

This update applies to GPU Shield Adapters purchased through authorized channels within the region, and Cooler Master is working with its partners to update all relevant materials. If you still see the old one-year warranty claim, note that product websites, specification sheets, data sheets, documentation, and support questionnaires in North America will be updated in the coming weeks as Cooler Master processes the change. The company has informed us that customers can consider this information as official confirmation that a three-year warranty will be in place while everything is being updated.“

Wait how did he add a second plug? I have that exact same card would definitely be nice to know you can add a second plug to it and cut the load in 1/2
 
Well on a modded card it's harder to blame nvidia though. 1000w and 2x12VHPWR is not really a lot of headroom if you can actually push 1000w through the card (that's hard, but heard DLSS5 can do it).

And still it always goes back to the same issue: with no pin monitoring/active load balancing you are blind to the current flowing through each pin. You won't stop the melting by simply measuring temperature from the outside of the wires.

Given the design details we know, this isn't a case of shit happens, it is a case of shit design.

People seem to be focusing on the connector, likely because that's where the damage shows up - the real flaw is the voltage regulator feeds that are not split. I suspect the no problem people are ones with really good resistance matching per pin so the the load spreads out. Some people may get lucky and not have a problem ever. If the regulator phases were split, everybody would be lucky, which is ironic as proper engineering doesn't rely on luck.

Where do you think electrical fires come from? Most PCs do not have combustible materials around the connectors but it's only a matter of time. I wouldn't leave one of these things powered on unattended in my house.

Out of curiosity, if data centers are buying up various levels of graphics adapters, what are their failure rates due to burnt connectors and/or failure rates in general?

Yes, I took out a rider on my homeowner's insurance policy to cover my daily driver. Not for the cost of the components, but the cost to replace them in the current market. Edit: 9800X3D, 5090, 64GB DDR5, 2x8GB SN850X, 2TB SN850X, etc.

Also, daily prayers to the Omnissiah...saccharine words for the machine spirit.

I'm just glad I have one but I'm babying the hell out of it as it's one thing to be like if it blows up it's 2.5-3.5k vs 6-9k to replace it now. Really hate to see what the 6090 goes for if it comes out.

MSRP on the 6090 will probably be 4999, actual price will 15k+
 
Nvidia's MSRP are fake with no real intention of that price point. While even at that price Nvidia will make a profit on their own made cards which they sell token quantities. For AIBs, MSRP is a joke price point. Bestbuy, Nvidia Official Retail seller, 389 reviews, that does not indicate any kind of volume at MSRP, the only one that remotely sold the RTX 5090 at MSRP. Nvidia can just make more money elsewhere with the memory availability, so the Cards are already EOL over a year before the next generation.
 
Sucks erek…. My buddy sent his melted connector 5090 to a third party shop for a replacement connector and for now it’s working fine again. He is definitely out of the high end GPU space after this though. Said he would go with a 9070xt with 8pins if it fails again. I’m still firmly in the camp of the connector sucks and plan on avoiding it on anything over a 5070 class card. To be fair the 90 class cards are out of my price range anyway on principle alone so I was never a buyer there. I play everything I care about on less so..
 
I'm a little confused. PCI-E 8 pins is 150w, so when pushing 900w they were out of spec for all wires? (nearly 300w per wire assuming perfect balancing?!)

Did the 8pin connectors have that much margin or did they maybe use a CPU power connector instead? Those EPS ones are rated much higher (over 300w) and I suppose they could be modded to work on a GPU.

edit: on their Youtube channel I see custom connectors, not PCIE 8pin connectors. Still neat, don't get me wrong. But seems like some things got lost in translation maybe.

Yes. They are much sturdier than what what they are officially rated for. While there are examples of fried PCIe 8-pins too, all that I am aware of came from a PSU that catastrophically failed or some dodgy adapter. People often abused PCIe 8-pin power with splitter cables on high power cards without even realising they were doing something wrong unless the PSU itself cuts the power from overload.
