Star Wars Zero Company

Otherewise, this game is pretty cool.

The graphics are kind of fantastic. There are some games out there which are technically doing more. But, its got a pretty high level of effects and visual features. And on top of that, the art design is fantastic. This game looks Star Wars as shit. And I love it.

Everybody looks cool and great and Star Warsy
Your spaceship looks cool
The base station where you hangout and get missions, is pretty fleshed out and feels cool to run around in.

The overall story is solid. Its not amazing. But, its also not boring. And that's because---
----The dialogue is pretty fantastic----and so is the voice acting. The characterizations and line delivery are well above average.
And the facial animations are above average, as well. They couulllld be better. But overall, they don't undersell the excellent dialogue and line delivery.

Your generic hired recruits also hang out around the base station. And even have some voice lines which really help them feel more connected to your main characters. its pretty interesting what they have done here.

Indeed, the combat system isn't as good as Xcom or Silent Storm or something like those complex classics.
But, its still quite good. In particular, your characters have a lot of interesting abilities. And the gear is pretty good, too.
Really, the big weak point of the game, is that the encounter design overall, isn't very interesting.

I think people whom have primarily played Japanese RPG tactics games-----wont find anything wrong here. And people whom grew up on Jagged Alliance, Xcom, Silent Storm, have played any modern versions of those-------Well I would say this:

Everything else about this game is kind of fantastic. I haven't been this sucked into a Star Wars game since KoTOR 1 and 2.
So, it ain't the end-all-be-all of tactical combat. But, it sure is a good game.

Its too bad they furloughed most of the devs a month ago with no pay. I think the game is selling pretty well. But, it gives me very little hope for bug/crash fixes. And those exact things could kill the momentum and keep it from selling well over time.

I'm also sure that if the full dev crew had still been working during the month before release----at least some of these things would have been cleaned up better. Cleaning up the battle camera seems like such low hanging fruit-----I wonder if they had purposefully left it for the end crunch time-----and then got furloughed before it was finished.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aside from crashing, there are some obvious little issues like:

late texture streaming. Some missions it doesn't happen at all. Some of them, its like every camera cut.
Some camera cuts cause judder for a couple of seconds
During combat, the camera frequently doesn't give a good view when the enemies are moving. Sometimes, you can't even see them at all. Particularly when reinforcements arrive.
I've had probably 3 times, where an icon or menu item was delayed in being interactable, for like 10 seconds.

And its not technically a bug. But, overall, the camera could use a lot of work during combat. The general camera where you view the battlefield and make your moves, could use a bit more control. Its a little too locked to isometric view.
And then when I have selected someone to take a shot------well dang the camera view is usually pretty poor. It would be cool to have a somewhat free cam. But also have a button to snap back to the over-the-shoulder view which the game uses most of the time. And overall, the camera is very basic. Its pretty strange to have these fantastic graphics------and a camera which feels like it came from a 25 year old tactics game.

And yeah I'm about to triple post, to keep things separated:

As is often the case: The best way I have found to manage the frames with this game, is to use Rivatuner with the "front edge sync" feature selected, for capping the framerate.
UE5's frame limiter is bad
Nvidia's from the driver control panel is better, and can be good enough for many games. But, its still not great for UE5.

I'm running the game at 1440P, all Ultra, DLAA, with a 5080. Monitor set to 120hz, with the game capped at 60, by Rivatuner.

Also, this game allows you to turn on Nvidia Reflex, without also activating framegen. And I have never found Reflex to be smooth. So I have it turned off. I can run in a straight line across the base station, and watch Reflex incorrectly double a frame, about every 6 seconds.

I tried a mod which enables UE5 Megalights and some hardware Ray Tracing features. It also has an option for Ray Reconstruction:
https://www.nexusmods.com/starwarszerocompany/mods/75?tab=description

You actually need this installed as a pre-requisite:
https://www.nexusmods.com/starwarszerocompany/mods/9?tab=description

Its.....not worth using right now. Its definitely interesting. And for some scenes, it can look pretty cool. But for many scenes, it can also ruin the cohesion of the lighting or just not.....have enough light. As it deactivates some of the normal lighting. Favoring instead to do something which seems like a half meausure to Path Tracing.
Performance hit isn't terrible, either.
However, it introduces a mega amount of hitching.

Could be something to keep an eye on, however. If it gets some attention, it looks like they have potentially enabled a way to make changes as meaningful as the recent Dark Souls and Bloodborne lighting mods.

Is there a strategic element outside of combat like base management or is is mostly just mission based?

The primary things outside of combat, are various text-based missions. These cost "intel" resources to do these missions. They can also expire, if you don't do them quickly enough. And Due to their various timings, you can't do them all. or may have to choose between them, if they expire at the same time.

These missions give you various rewards like money, gear, various experience points. Some of them you simply click on them and you auto complete them. Some of them you have a multiple choice set of options, which can have various positive or negative results.

Some of the missions you have to assign team members in order to complete the mission. And based on how the text goes, they could get hurt and need to spend time in the med bay.

Ultimately, doing actual missions and text based missions, gives you "influence" or ways to manipulate influence, over one of many galactic regions. Gaining influence levels in each regions, gives you various rewards like gear, various experience points, etc.

There is also a system for your base station, referred to as your "den". Here you can essentially "research" for better stat bonuses, more slots for weapon attachments, etc.

Its pretty interesting. But maybe not incredible? Its interesting enough----and leveraging these things effectively, will feedback into your ability to be able to complete more difficult fights. Or just have more fun being able to utilize a lot of different skills and gear.

After disabling Curve Optimizer, I thought I was all good with no crashing. Played for a few hours.

Then the next night, lots of crashing.

So, I updated my X870 BIOS, which was about 10 months old.
And I relaxed my 64GB of DDR5 6400 from 6400 to 6000. I mostly did that, to be able to keep the SOC voltage at stock. As the memory controller required a boost to SOC voltage, to run 6400.
I think the RAM itself is totally stable. But, maybe the memory controller and/or SOC, weren't one-hundred-percent, with 64GB of 6400 and boosted voltage.

Played a few more hours with no crashing. We'll see!

The game certainly has some bugs and weirdness here or there. I'm not sure if its actually truly revealing instability, or if its haywire code. This computer has never crashed games with the settings I had been running.
I think I'm all good now, with no crashing. Two long play sessions later, zero crashes.

So, I disabled curve optimizer/PBO

I updated my BIOS

and I relaxed my 2x32GB RAM speed from DDR5 6400, to DDR5 6000. Which means I can run stock voltage on the memory controller. The RAM is rated for 6400. But, its possible the memory controller was only 99% stable, and this game revealed that one percent.

Never had this system crash any games before, for about two years.

So is this game any good or junk ?
The above replies seem to indicate significant play time as I understand it. Can't be that bad if the work arounds to solve crashing issues were worth the effort. 😂

I'll wait for it to be too cheap to pass up. My old ryzen will probably struggle too from what it looks like.

Is it more fun then x-com 2?

It amazingly runs on a 4790k and 2060Super. Low settings and vsync on and capped at 60. Stutters here and there with some odd pop and funky shadows but game is playable. Initial start up only took about 8-10 mins for shader caching.

Just getting time this weekend from work to consider buying this or three other games that have come out recently. There's a lot to unpack.

In a nutshell, is this Star Wars XCom?

No the story and world building seems more coherent then ChimeraSq, game play is more Xcom too.
