Red Dead Redemption 2

The best part is when the AI bugs out and the npc's run into you, claim its your fault and shoot first. Then a witness sees you kill them and you have to run from the law.
Frequently I'll be having a fist fight using mouse 1, out of no where the prompt for shooting them comes up and you shoot them since it's the same button. And then other times it'll completely refuse to pull my gun out when I want to pull it out.

I also forgot how annoying the movement system in Rockstar's engine is.

Yeah, mechanically this game is a mess. Doesn't give me a ton of hope for GTA VI.

Biggest issue for me was razor linear nature of missions. There is absolutely zero amount of deviations allowed. I get it that's due to storyline flow constraints, but they show zero creativity here.

Kind come actually did it amazingly well: you can fail so many objectives and still finish the mission. And they're history based game, so that says a lot.

But otherwise, a very solid game this rdr2

If you say so, but it doesn't excuse the fact the game has a metric shit ton of issues.
Yeah there are some bugs Im encountering but 90hrs in and they are pretty minor so far. Id give it an 8.5/10 for polish but 9-9.5/10 for just about everything else. The story and the voice acting are top notch. The combat is pretty good in first person. Decent gunplay and melee considering it's not a dedicated shooter. The graphics and environmental design are fantastic even 8 years later. And i've never seen a game depict nature and animals as well as this game does. I've seen dogs playing with each other in a way that looks quite realistic and bison rolling around on the ground like they are scratching their back, a hawk hunting a rabbit, etc. There is a ton of different animations and behavioral states for the animals and you see that stuff even when you're riding by on your horse, just happening naturally in the world. It also does a better job of things like crafting, skinning animals, and hunting than most dedicated survival games. There are a lot of small details that really impress me. And there's some pretty good emergent gameplay possibilities as well in terms of how you can interact with the world and the NPCs.
For me, never having played a Western, there's also a novelty factor where it feels quite fresh to be existing in this environment.

I also really appreciate the slowness of the camera movement. I think rock star made a very conscious decision to slow things down and try to convey a sense of weight and environmental interaction in terms of the way the camera moves at least in first person since i'm not playing it in third. Like when you're near smaller objects like a chair, you can't just float above or close around them in a kind of floaty camera way like in so many first person games. It feels like you're bumping into the chair or consciously stepping around it in terms of the camera movement. There is a natural feeling of friction/collision and bumping into things. That is something i've never encountered to this level in a game. Also , the way you slide down , rocks and climb around is pretty well done too. And you can't endless sprint , like in so many first person games. Basically , what i'm saying is they've done a better job of making you feel like just a normal human being in your environment and not a floating camera with a gun arm and feet which is what most games accomplish with their camera movement. And the rattling sound of your gear when you're moving around is also a nice touch.

I started playing this after almost 200 hours. In cyberpunk 2077, which I absolutely love but other than great mantling animations the camera movement in that game feels floaty and unattached to the world the player inhabits. I think pretty much all first person games i've played feel that way in comparison to RDR2.

Also I think they've beaten the likes of bethesda and CDPR in terms of creating an interesting place to explore for cool landmarks and discoveries side missions etc in terms of the map in RDR2. sometimes I just explore to c9me across interesting stuff, and there is lots of it. Currently exploring St Denis which reminds me of New Orleans., picked up some cool side missions and seen some funny details like "blind" beggars some of whom are actually con artists and when you aim your gun at them , they panic. You can try to steal the money in their hat and they will grab the hat away before you can take it. Eventually, after screwing with a guy like this several times he just said the h*** with this and walked away to beg somewhere else. Took a woman to the theater where we watched a vaudeville review and when I rotated the camera , one of the options was to put my arm around her and try to make a move, which amusingly failed. It's also cool how the random things your character says to people around him will vary based on the state of that person , like if they're drunk , you will tease them about it, etc.

Rockstar absolutely nailed creating a believable detailed world that your character reacts appropriately to.

Hmmm I wouldn't mind trying a FPS mod for the game, got a link to the one that you are using?

Don't think I ever had any crashes or bugs either! Don't remember any, at least.

First person is actually pretty awesome to play in. I did a play in first person and no dead-eye, shooting and overall everything felt very natural, not like a tacked-on afterthought!

I often like to park myself in ch2, when you just arrive to horseshoe overlook and enjoy open world. Sometimes, I just progress to the part where horse stables open and stop doing any missions. You can actually take your stolen stuff to fence in Rhodes and never do that one with Hosea in emerald ranch, because Rhodes is open right away.

Prologue is also one of my favorite parts. The slowness is just major charm in a game like this.

Fantastic game overall. Like previously mentioned, only gripe is locked in missions with zero deviation allowed.

So sort of like FO and ES games then. Cool, good to know.
I'm learning so much today that I feel like I did a Sesame Street marathon. :D
Yeah but the first person ranged and melee combat and overall sense of body awarness and environment interaction is 10x better in RDR2 than in any of those games, for the reasons I described and others I didn't.

Environment and story wise, yeah. Mechanically and control-wise it's tedious as hell.
I'm not finding at tedious to play mechanically or control wise. I'm using the new steam controller and the official layout. I will say that some of the button selections by default in the game seem a little bit fussy or overcomplicated , but on the steam controller , that is not an issue. It\nMakes no difference if I have to press the x and the y buttons at different points to open and close drawers for example .
Like I've said , I like the slower pace in terms of movement and interactions that the game forces on the player.

I think the problem is, they ran out of buttons, due to many functions, hence the overlap. At first, it took some time to learn and get used to, but after playing for a little bit, our brains learn and it becomes second nature.

I played both, on keyboard+mouse and controller.

Same, originally played on the PS4 at the time. When it came out on PC, yes it was a task to get it all down and get used to, but good lord after a bit, it was so much better, at least to me, when comparing to a console.

And yes, I do believe as of right now, it's the best single player game to date. Does GTA 6 beat it? Doubt it, but I'd love to eat my words.

I'm honestly somewhat in awe of this game the more I play it. Especially considering it's 8 years old but still owns any more recent games ive played.

Like, I didn't even consider it when it came out on PC at first , because I stupidly had this perception of rock star as very tech ambitious but immature in their game design. Boy was I wrong. RDR2 is a better narrative experience than most Hollywood movies I've seen.
