DLSS 5.0

Plasma TV for Gaming (Youtuber) puts it this way: Nvidia releases some "bleeding edge" tech, but it destroys performance and it's only useable on the top tier flagship GPUs that costs thousands. AMD on the other hand will wait for the next gen when it's more doable on a mid range - upper mid range card and that's when they will implement the feature. Path tracing is an example of this, Nvidia launched the tech back in 2022 but really only the 4080 and 4090 could deliver playable performance when using it. AMD waited until the next gen and now even the 9070 XT has some respectable path tracing performance, at least at 1440p which is the target resolution for it. Right now neural rendering is only useable on a 5090, but AMD's next gen should bring that feature down to the upper mid range level. I think RDNA5 will have pretty useable neural rendering even if you don't have the flagship. But I'm also expecting Nvidia to greatly improve DLSS5 performance at the same time and make it more useable on cards below a 5090.
Nobody, I mean nobody hands AMD the crown on ray tracing. Are they good enough to beat two gens ago from Nvidia, yes. It's just a thing. Do I think AMD is good enough for gamers to have fun? Sure. Is it "everything"? No. Not if you need CUDA, not if you need full on path tracing. And those kinds of things tend to make people (right or wrong) spend the extra couple of Benjamins on a roughly equivalent (outside of those differences) Nvidia GPU. AMD has to fight the "you'll never get fired for buying Nvidia" mindset. And it's a very tough nut to crack. So, we wait, we believe, and.... we get disappointed. Life on team Red.

Edit: Also remember that Nvidia's flagships are dying and it's not an insignificant number, and it's happening to very visible people. And... with all of that... people are doing the spend and buying Nivida (sigh).

Do you have a number on that? It seems like almost everyone who makes claims, be it that a lot are dying or not a lot are dying, don't have actual numbers. So far the only people who allegedly have had numbers are the HUB Aussies, they said OEMs had shared their RMA numbers with them and they were not higher. HOWEVER, they couldn't share those numbers so we are taking their word for it.

If you do, then I'd be real interested in them. If not then I would say you are making a claim without evidence. As they say "The plural of anecdote is not data."

Maybe at 4k output. But at lower resolution it expend.

On a 5080 NBA 2k27, 1440p DLSS quality with DLSS 5.0 on still average over 100 fps, on a 5070 around 65 fps.

I would imagine the bar for 1440p/DLSS quality will be around the 5070TI for the first version. For 1080p dlss quality, 5070 are good, even the 5060ti can play with max seting at over 75 avg fps a game like 2k27.

Also we are early on the testing, it will be interesting to see lower resolution via more aggressive upscaling + lower setting with DLSS 5 enabled in case that it look better than higher res/higher setting performance difference.

The moment it goes from FP8 to NVFP4, maybe 5070 get to be the bar for many title at 1440p dlss quality (already over 60fps on 8bits for 2k27).

Performance is definitely BRUTAL. 60fps without FG is pretty much the best I can currently do on a 5090 at 4K, 3x FG and I'm at 150fps. Call me crazy but I'm actually thinking of downgrading to a 1440p display for the time being while model optimizations are being made lol. I think DLSS5 is a pretty big game changer for titles that have subpar lighting and character models such as Stalker 2, on games that already have excellent character models and path tracing available the improvements are way more subtle and not worth it for me personally. IMO, DLSS5 is a more meaningful improvement to the graphics than going to 4K, of course I will switch back to 4K once performance optimizations are made but for now playing on 3x FG with 50/60fps mouse input just feels awful.

There is a tool to enable x3/x4 MFG on 40-series cards, in case the performance hit is too high.
All of the tools I've seen claiming to do that have turned out to not work properly such as just duplicating frames. What about this one? Any tests?

"Modders Get DLSS 5 Working on AMD Graphics Cards, Though Performance is Rough

A modder has ported DLSS 5 Neural Rendering onto an AMD GPU for the first time, less than a week after the tech started spreading to older NVIDIA cards. Developer danielblnc released a tool called DLSS-NR for AMD, which allows AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs to run NVIDIA's neural rendering model in supported games. The setup works by dropping a small installer and NVIDIA's own nvngx_dlssnr.dll file into a game's bin folder, then toggling neural rendering through an FSR 3 or FSR 4 profile. It has been tested on Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V: Enhanced so far, with older AMD GPUs reportedly not supported. Anti-cheat games will block the DLL entirely, so this is single-player territory only for now.

According to tests by YouTuber Ancient Gameplays, performance is still the bottleneck. Early builds tanked Cyberpunk 2077 from over 80 FPS down to around 11-12 FPS at 1080p on the Radeon RX 9070 XT. The modder's latest Alpha v0.2.7 update has clawed back roughly 12%, pushing it to about 30 FPS, still a steep cost for a card that handles native rendering well. The reason this works at all is quite straightforward. DLSS 5 runs on FP8 math, and AMD's RDNA 4 architecture, which powers the RX 9000 series, has native FP8 support, just like NVIDIA's RTX 50-series and 40-series cards."
