there will be content gated off for some players
It's actually worse than microtransactions because with that there is no fomo, you can buy it any time. But if you don't buy the ultimate edition you are forever locked out of some content?!

Rockstar is pissing in our mouths and says its raining. At least don't brag about no microtransactions when you are doing something even worse.

Generally you are able to upgrade to the ultimate edition of games at any time post normal edition purchase.

I assume you can buy it later at a slightly higher price. But that is not a micro-transaction, it is a macro-transaction. It seems like it is going to be lame cosmetic content so at least it likely won't matter to most people. A lot of those cosmetics I would never use in most games even if free. I will say I do find this better than an in game store with dozens of cosmetics thrown in your face Ubisoft style. As long as they keep that out of the single player experience and keep the online store outside of the in game world for them multiplayer I don't mind much as long as there is enough good content to begin with.

What I hate is when single player (and multi player) games have in game pop-ups with real world purchasing. A number of Ubisoft games had that, where I would walk up to something and it would say "purchase this with real money".

I like how this thread is in the PC Gaming & Hardware section and will probably another year or two before it's out on PC.
Thats because the majority of game discussions happen here. Its discussing the game regardless of what its on. Only thing that people post is console specific or console exclusive stuff. Keeps it all in one thread instead of split between many. Not so sure why this is so hard to see.

I tried playing GTA V on PS3, trust me this is a PC game, and maybe a PS6 game eventually.

If you're referring to the $100 version, no, it's not just cosmetic content. Items and even the ability to go into some stores/buildings are locked away if you don't pay for the $100 version.

They knew exactly what they were doing. They wanted the game to be $100, but they didn't want to outright say it's $100. So really it's $80, but if you want all of the content it's actually $100.

I wonder what the breakdown will be for number of people that bought the Standard Edition vs the Ultimate Edition...I'm sure Standard will win out but will it be close?...seems like GTA is the one series that people don't mind spending extra $$

I think I heard somewhere it was well over 50% people that bought the Ultimate Edition.

EDIT: Sorry, it's closer to 90% apparently.

wow 89% of pre-orders are for the Ultimate Edition...GTA!!...so that means that Rockstar could have priced the Standard Edition at $100 and it would still have sold well...nothing in gaming matches the GTA hype

"The firm says the typical range for premium game editions is 10- 20%, and the GTA6 split is something they have never seen before"

Yes, because as I said, it's obvious they wanted it to be a $100 game but then claim, "well, it's actually only $80"...

Rockstar doesn't need to worry about public relations...if they wanted to price it at $100 they could have easily done so...probably the only developer that could get away with it...games with a huge open world sandbox are worth the higher price tag...I would have paid $100 for Elden Ring

But, they didn't. So why the charade with a clearly inferior $80 version?

this can put it in the hands of people who arent exactly rich and if they want they can upgrade to the full version if they care. Casting a wider net. This also helps make sure that the game sells well this holiday season. Telling a parent or the like what they want for christmas is 80 instead of 100 can make or break it. Im sure in 8 months when they have the sales data from doing this they will know if it was better to do this or better to just make it 100 flat out.

Do the stores sell more than cosmetic things? If so that is kind of shitty.

I assume the extra content is not that big of a deal, but I need to look into it more. If that article about 89% of the pre-orders being the $100 is true that is unprecedented. Essentially $30 more than the typical AAA game.

I mean, you're already spending $80

Might as well eat another $20 for your once in 15 years video game so you can enjoy mullet Jason and big hair Lucia

Told you, fomo is a strong drug. Nobody wants to spend $80 on an inferior version.

Rockstar is very insidious. Sure other games have bonus content in the ultimate edition too, like some useless eccentric armor or weapon that only boost your stats in early game, but this is very different. This feels more like they are taking away content from you if you don't pass the $100 poverty check as opposed to granting some minor bonus item on top.

Depending on what he PS5 pro version looks like and if it has a 40fps VRR mode I may buy it now rather than wait.

There's one guy around here that constantly says sequels do worse because they're released when people are poor and there's a financial crisis, well, nothing has changed over the past few years, prices for goods are still going up while our paychecks don't keep up, yet a lot of people can still afford a $100 version of GTA 6.

I'm curious to see how his argument will change next time when this is brought up.

Myself, I am not going to get this until it's less than $10, gta 5 was okay, but 4 is my favorite.

TBF early pre-orders are the most rabid fans, I doubt total sales will show the same ratio between normal and ultimate editions.

True, but it's GTA 6, it'll sell like hot cakes, the only difference is that the people that would trade it in after they're done or bored with it, can't.

I traded in my copy of GTAV on PS3, this is just another reason to wait for the PC version. It's hard to judge how many sales they loose since it will be incredibly popular either way.

Here's to hoping you can dump Lucia as Jason & move on with a higher quality woman. The femcoded girlboss & dopey boytoy crap ain't for me when its released on PC. If you can't even leave that "romantic" relationship in game, hopefully mods will do the job.

Thankfully I'm in the boat that I'll happily wait x more years for a polished game after any blowback and spend only $20 for it.

I realize though that for $100 you will get days if not months of entertainment versus say going out to dinner or going to the movies 2-3 times. So $100 is still quite a bargain these days IF you enjoy the game enough and have the equipment to run it already.

Jason's face after Lucia finds out he went to the strip club.

So then what is the upgrade if not a microtransaction?
A macro transaction ? micro tend to be smaller piece meal than big DLC amount of stuff.

Still a pain, I think they wanted that price and that virtually 100% of the target audience was OK with it, the game is obviously worth $20 more than Doom and $30 more than about all $70, but there is some taboo and lot of content about people complaining about the price tag, that believe that a 2 billion game that took 10 years pushing the medium ahead should be sold the same price as a 200 millions game that just did what already existed over a different IP... even if the game will be a decade long affair with an different tier completely of content and stuff to do in it like the previous one.

So you can easily avoid a lot of the negative content machine with that trick.

GTA VI Won’t Just Be Bigger Than GTA V, as Rockstar Touts Deeper Interactivity Than Even Red Dead Redemption 2

Head of Development Rob Nelson:

Vice City is twice the size as Los Santos, but the number of built-up towns outside the city is 11 times the size of GTAV in terms of the little towns you can come across!...so you start way down here in the Keys for the first part of the game, and that’s Jason’s little house that you see in Trailer 2...and then the game just opens and you can go anywhere, anytime...you can enter a lot of buildings, a lot, a huge number...
