DOOM: The Dark Ages

So does this mean any plans of a next generation Quake game are not happening now?

I'm sure Quake is a big enough name and series that MS will push ID to make a sequel - just not sure how I'd feel about the game running on anything other than a ID tech engine.

The chain spear is just awful IMO so far.

I haven't bought the new expansion yet, but to me, Doom 2016 was the best of the new trilogy of Doom games. I actually found Dark Ages to be way to repetitive and got boring quick with each level being practically being the same thing over and over. Get to a new level, fight off the weak zombies, then fight some mini bosses and deflect and reflect the green energy orb blasts, and then a boss for that map. Rinse and repeat the same, got old quick for me.

Doom Eternal was great and not great, didn't appreciate the Super Mario Bros stuff, with Doom I just want to run and gun things down, not be a circus trapeze guy, but without that stuff Eternal was super cool, and the graphics looked amazing.

I think they were trying to make each game different in the trilogy, with Doom 2016 being the straightforward shooter, and DE having the platforming and parkour stuff, and DA bringing in the melee stuff with the shield and spear. I get that, make each new game be something fresh and different, but it was too much, just give me 2016 style game, no parkour, no shields to throw, just my trusty shotgun and rocket launcher and let me mow down enemies while running around.

Yeah that's the thing, they have outright stated that they want each game and expansion to be different (too different if you ask me), which reminds me of Nintendo, who say things like they don't want to make a new F-Zero for example cuz they don't know how to make it different. Gawd damnit I don't want different! I just want a new fucking game! But then Nintendo goes and makes like 4 or 5 games in the New Super Mario Bros. series that are all extremely similar, and then Super Mario Bros. Wonder didn't feel different enough from the NSMB series. Anyways, I get id Software 2.0 (R.I.P.) wanting to do different things with each game, but they change shit up a bit too much. I recall that when Marty Stratton was recently asked about their next game, he said "we would hope that our next game is nothing like anything we've done before". Like for Nintendo I would advise them to focus on making a good game first, rather than prioritizing and focusing on just making the game different. I understand developers get bored and wanna try new things, but there's a fine line to walk before the games don't even feel like they are even in the same series anymore. At least now I know how id Software 2.0 rolls, so for example when TDA showed up I was a lot more prepared for it to be different than when Eternal showed up. So I'll be wary of their next game too (if they ever even get to make another game, considering the butchering the asshats at Microsoft just gave them).

"You can't rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn't be your default belief"

That's a fair point. Doom The Dark Ages I don't think actually sold all that well? Could've sworn it's first month of sales were worse than Eternal?

Not sure why that was?

Of the 3 newer Doom games I think only Eternal was successful and a big hit. 2016 and Dark Ages were mediocre in sales from what I recall.

What did Bethesda pay for iD?

only 1 member of the id Tech team is left after the layoffs...very sad...Unreal Engine is set to dominate the gaming industry...

I'm not surprised. MS buying up a bunch of game studios was never going to end well. MS would just manage then into producing a bunch of corporate shovelware. Hopefully these mass cuts will result in a bunch of new game studios that actually make something new and interesting.

At this point why even keep them? If they need money they could have just sold the studio or allowed it to go independent. If the axe the engine you're pretty much killing off half the purpose of iD. It often makes sense to have an in house engine if you can can use it in multiple games being developed, which Microsoft certainly has. Doom Eternal sold well but the Dark Ages did poorly likely due to Gamepass. Sounds like Microsoft is blaming iD's failure on their own business strategy.

There is another Wolfenstien game in development, and if the people working on idTech are gone it will probably make development more problematic. Which might result in more delays and a rough launch. And Microsoft will wonder why it under performs, and then probably kill MachineGames.

F that biatch.
It appears Cultural Nepotism is thriving at M$: “Xbox Indian CEO Asha Sharma just announced firing 3,200 Americans,” read a widely viewed tweet by @cutoffs_io, a handle that posts about the US labour market." She filed for 5,000 H-1B visa hires this year. Asha was appointed CEO of Xbox in February by Indian Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. It's really the only explanation as to how someone so inexperienced was able to acquire the position over much more qualified candidates like Sarah Bond.
