Trump phone is an HTC with a Samsung display

I'm reminded more than a little of the Escobar phones... it's an old phone with a layer of tacky faux gold on top. Very on-brand.

So if people aren't getting ripped off (relative to the U24 Pro's price if you could buy it in the US), what's the big deal? Did anyone really expect a brand new phone to be designed for this? I mean, sure, a little explicit indication that it's not a new design would have been nice. As was also pointed out in the article, the best "made in the USA" device you can get costs $2000, and even then the SoC probably came from China.

I don't think anyone sensible expected this to be a true made-in-the-USA phone. The problem is that a lot of the target audience probably thinks otherwise, especially with that name and a big (if incorrect) American flag on the back. So it's not a ripoff, but it is deliberately misleading — their "America First" phone is designed by a Taiwanese brand and assembled in China.

You could get an iPhone, a Pixel, or even a Galaxy and have more American involvement than a U24 Pro.

I'm certainly not going to justify this but I can tell you why the Trump plan is $47. BTW you had 45 posts as of that one. You missed a shot, buddy. Shoulda made a couple of filler posts first. :)

Edit: also, granting the price is too high, it's not related to the phone itself being overpriced or anything.

No surprise. Even Trump's MAGA hat is Made in China. Who would even make the components in the US? I think circuit boards are all made in China. Federal law states something can't be called "Made in USA" unless all parts are made here.

There are companies that make phone components in the US. Apple sources some of its iPhone parts in the States. You can't get everything in the country, though, and Taiwan / China is still an ideal hub due to the sheer number of suppliers, the huge manufacturing base, and easy access to rare earth minerals.

Either way, the administration loves to maintain the lie that it can just say the word and have everything made in the US. And, for that matter, the illusion that new manufacturing would lead to significantly more jobs (robotics, anyone?).

In some cases they're foreign companies with US presences (like Samsung and TSMC), but others are American firms like Corning, Cirrus Logic, and TI. There's even some rare earth mineral sourcing, although it definitely won't handle all of Apple's needs.

This isn't giving anyone a free pass; Apple put out that PR not just to tout its US presence, but to get the White House off its back. It's still true that production isn't as deeply rooted in China (or India, for that matter) as some say.
