No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

I always ask this question and forget the answer by the next major update, but what is the core gameplay loop again?
Go to planet, scan things, collect resources, build things if you like, go to other planets, repeat. It's fundamentally an exploration/collecting/building game. There's story missions, but they basically are the same kind of thing (go to planet, collect resources, etc). It is kinda of a large sandbox. At this point there's plenty of different things to do, like you can build bases on planets if you like, either to gather more resources or just for fun, you can get a freighter which is a mobile base and build the interior of that. You can own/manage a settlement. You can do space and land combat, though it isn't super deep. It has a touch of a bunch of different things that you can engage with, or not, as you like.

The original "goal" was to reach the center of the galaxy, which you can still do at which point you get dumped in to a new galaxy (there are 256 galaxies) but there's not really a compelling reason to do that if you don't want to, for the most part people just play around in the first galaxy.

It's something of a "make your own fun" game. While it does have a story, I wouldn't say it is super solid and if you are looking for good, curated, narrative, gameplay this isn't it. It's here's a galactic sized sandbox, go play around. They just keep adding more things for you to play with. The problem it had initially, in addition to being super buggy, was there wasn't much to do. The core "collect, upgrade, travel" mechanic was there but that was about it. With each major patch, they give you more things to do while you do that, so the game is more fun, at least to me.

I find it kinda like Terraria or other "make your own fun" games in that I'll enjoy the hell out of it for awhile, get tired of it, set it aside and play something more scripted/narrative focused, then later go back and enjoy it all over again.

What is the core gameplay loop of MineCraft?
It's just a space sandbox. You explore.
Have never played MineCraft so I honestly wouldn't know.

Cheers! I should bookmark this post for the next time there is a large update. 😎

They need to work on snapping of parts. Some things make no sense at all. They will fit on an edge but not centered. Then you can place parts that bleed into the others so you can't move around in your ship due to doorways being blocked.

It's interesting how they cater to people that want to just stand put on 1 planet and those that want to keep planet hoping. I don't think I could ever stay put.

Just rocked through the xeno rooster fighting. It took a bit to understand the mechanics, but after snatching up a few S and A tier critters I was doing pretty well. Minor system battles I am darn near wiping the NPC three beasts with just my one. The Nexus dude though.. the game scales him up a few ticks higher and been on the losing end of that game.

It's a fun extra mechanic in the game and I got a few more hours of game play out of it.

Also I ended up trying the fishing mini game and that was amusing and I can see where trying to flesh out your fish catalog would be interesting. Not a whole mess of skill, but dedicated time to find the planets.

I got back into this game. Loaded up a file I haven't used since 2024, man this game is a lot bigger than even 2 years ago. There are so many quest lines and various things to do and max out. I haven't even started arena battles yet, I've been trying to finish the AI minotaur quest after I found a suitable Guppy exotic and maxed that out. Very relaxing game to get lost in.

Found my new buddy Master Thuga, thought that name was humerous.

This was a werid one. I thought I found a new feature where you could find wrecks in trees, but it was just a bug. Flew off as soon as I took the tree down. Still funny.

I think i will play this one day - i started a game around 2018 and played off and on but never got very far and then shelved it. Time to revisit.

I think I am good for a bit, and I explored what I wanted to see.

Did a few ranks in the creature battles and beat the Anomaly Oceanitus guy once so I feel I have explored that.

Made some bone statues, made a basic corvette, did some fishing, and decided to pass on the industrial waste and base ownership.

A little disappointed I am not finding a new exotic ship or a S-class freighter, but so it goes.

Rawr, I'm a scary bone sculpture!

After talking with a coworker he convinced me to give the corvette building a chance.

So a few 30 minute grind sessions for salvageable scrap and I concocted this monstrosity. Honestly, not a bad experience. Now I just need to trick out the inside like a 70's swinger pad.

Once again coworker pipes up in standup and was shocked I wasn't doing the "trade routes" for credits.

He told me to take a bit to:
- Find 3 star systems with a sell percentage 70-80 and a buy -20 to -30.
- Slap a base at a trade post consisting of: base computer, solar panel, battery, teleportor on each
- Name each the system and the next system..
- Buy everything from the terminal, hop to the next system, and sell to an NPC to not crash the economy.

https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Trade_route

Fair enough - did the four banger route with one 3-star and three 2-stars. Got that setup and timed my loop. Eight minutes and I made 14 million credits. Dang. Not like I was hurting for credits at 550 million, but not a bad output for the eight minutes of input going forward.

Edit: added in the three banger system two 2-stars and one 3-star. 5 and a half minutes and I banged out another 15 million credits.

A good trade route is an easy way to make cash early on. Though, I don't bother much with the trade routes, I just sell to the terminals as I make the rounds of my various mineral farms. Cad/gold/silver/nanites/gravatino farm and back again.

I love the statistics on this game. 10 years after release and millions of players less than 0.000000001% of the planets (18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets in the game) have been explored, 14% of Euclid - the first galaxy - has been explored, and 90-95% of players never even left Euclid out of the 256 galaxies in the game. Absolutely insane.

Oddly I am just looking into them now off my third or fourth start of the game since having it. It was a nice quirky thing I never looked into but was surprised it is there.

Now there are seven planets with my trash portals on it. ha!

I never did much farming either. Not a high interest like the industrial waste stuff.

It depends on which system it is, most of the time I just sell my minerals at the same planet I harvest them but I think my gold and cadmium technically make 10million a day? Active Indium used to be the motherload price wise but they nerfed it a year or two ago. Not long after I'd set one up if I remember right.

Finding fighters and salvaging them at stations can be worth it. Look up Starship AI valves, they are worth 12million each. Pirate systems with smuggling goods can be decent too. Real easy to just teleport between your own bases, dont have to worry about being caught in space with naughty goods. Selling items worth nanites to the merchant in the pirate stations that sell nanite goods is an easy way to earn nanites. Buy the suspicious goods from the one vendor for 70k or so, then walk over to the nanite parts guy and sell there. Just don't equip any of the items you get out of the goods you bought (shields for jetpack or ship etc.).

Refocused with a new plan - warping my ass to the core. No black holes, no monoliths, just my freighter and the grind.

I did find a nice S-class derelict if anyone needs to farm it. RNG hasn't been good but one more hyperdrive and I can hit the road again.

It's three rooms and takes an average one minute to speed run it. No ladders, no bio aliens. Straight shot and you don't even need to refuel your cold shield.

I figure I have 52ish 83ish jumps with my current setup and at about a minute to complete each jump it shouldn't be that bad of a grind.

After the four previous play throughs, and owning this since 2016, I can finally leave Euclid.

After 489 hours, four different saves, and owning the game since August 2016, I join the 1-5%'ers to leave Euclid.

I threw a base down about 3k light years from the core as a goodbye. Not surprising all the systems around the core have been discovered and recorded.

At least I was smart enough to check if warping through with my freighter would be a problem. Just got a throw away ship and multi tool as active, and cleaned out my exosuit mods. Then sayonara Euclid and hello Hilbert.

I also just jumped to Hilbert, but forgot about clearing slots on anything. Oh my gosh is that annoying. Got a very nice cliffside settlement over a huge ocean on a paradise planet right after jumping though so that's nice.
