I wasn't speaking to lack of hand holding specifically but rather the rough controls. For example, during swimming going back up bugs out many times and she doesn't surface properly. Then she keeps hitting her head on the sprites instead of just grabbing the ledge. Sometimes, she would completely miss the ledge during a jump. Then run over a ledge simply because of keyboard inputs.
As for finding the gears, I will ultimately get there but generally, it is a rough experience as far as controls are concerned.
To the question of did they add mouse look - the answer is yes. However, given there is no lock on button it is a bit tough to hit the targets when you are running away from them and she is facing in a different direction as she only shoots in the front.
If you want to play the old games but with some QOL improvements, I would recommend Anniversary and Underworld over these 3 (which I have never played before btw). I will continue to soldier on but yeah it is not a good time generally. Hoping TR2 and 3 are better in terms of controls.
