i'm a wrinkly old millennial and i never thought i'd play a game again that hooked me like a few did when i was in my teens and twenties. i got DayZ about a year ago though and i quickly racked up the hours. in faact i now have more hours in DayZ than anything else in my (huge) Steam library by FAR.

even though the standalone version of DayZ has been out since late 2018 it actually had its highest concurrent player count last year, so growth/player numbers has been pretty good. it has a huge modding scene with painless Workshop integration which no doubt has kept people going more than anything else, but the devs are still adding content nonetheless and i guess there's a huge update planned for late this year with a new map and a bunch of gameplay additions.

what's crazy is that there is NOTHING else like DayZ out there. even though it's obviously a "multiplayer open world survival" game (which has turned into a massive gaming genre) it's NOT the "chop wood, chop stones, chop iron ore, melt iron ore, chop tin, build floors, now build walls.." loop that most of the genre is built around. instead it's mostly about finding stuff. there IS base building in official/unmodded servers but it's more just building a wall or two and a gate to block off a pre-existing building on the map, rather than elaborate structures built from scratch (different story on modded servers though, the sky's the limit there.) and it's just for storing your loot, there's no crafting workstations and shit like that. there is also ZERO structure to the gameplay. you don't get missions from NPCs or buy things from NPC traders, you don't level up skills or gain XP - it's just you versus the environment and other players. i freaking love that.

anyone here play it?

I played it when it was a mod a long time ago. It was fun for a while . There are/were actually a lot of games like it that kicked off when it got big as an Arma mod. H1Z1 was probably the biggest clone, then there were numerous spin off genres and games.

betcha can't name a single current game that's like it
Haven't played it but sounds similar to Rust.
it's only similar in that they're both "multiplayer open world survival." otherwise they are massively different game. rust is very basebuilding-centric, to the point that i would argue the entire point of rust is building and defending your base and attacking other bases. and in a closely related way, rust is also heavily focused on crafting. there is NO crafting in dayz really, other than some simple "recipes" that are just combining two items, for example a stack of small sticks and some rags can make a splint (the structural base building stuff is, again, extremely basic). rust also has group UI where you can see where your teammates are at all times and so on. none of that in dayz, it's completely up to the players to make groups and try to differentiate friend from foe.**

**all this goes out of the window of course when mods come into play, but i'm referring to the core, unmodded gameplay here

PUBG is probably the closest since it began life as DayZ: Battle Royale, a mod of DayZ.
My son and I played the shit out of it years ago, DayZ not PUBG.

I had it installed again recently but still havent gotten around to trying it.

He’s talented enough, if you’re into rap music, I guess. Not sure what this has to do with pc gaming though???

Played a ton of it even before it was released as standalone. Haven't played it for many years now though (excluding firing it up once in a while to check what's going on).
I have only 108 hours in it on Steam, but that doesn't count thousands of hours I put into it when it was ARMA III mod.

Escape from Tarkov
This is nothing like DayZ, at least for me, and that's the reason I love it. The whole pressure to loot up and extract is gone and you're free to play however you want. Live in the woods surviving off of mushrooms, trapping rabbits and shooting the occasional deer while never seeing another person? You can do that. The next day you can decide to loot a military area and find some PvP if you're feeling up to it. Zero objectives, zero pressure other than not starving to death. Its almost my perfect game.

similar in some ways, but EFT is instanced, small (relatively) maps with match making; DayZ is true open world, no sessions or time limits, you log in where you logged out and the day/night cycle rolls on without you. like an MMO in that sense. the other huge difference is that EFT has a lot of persistence with your character/account, where DayZ has none (other than how you can log out and back in and continue on)

my dream game would basically be DayZ but with a supernatural horror component (i mean, more than just zombies...) and maybe just a teeeeny tiny bit of (OPTIONAL) structure, like random quests you get the option to do, or temporary "hot zones" that spring up occasionally with various mutators to keep things fresh.

but i mean, as it stands right now even, i've never been so hooked by a game, ever.

oh, and you know what else i love about DayZ? it's so hardcore, and the learning curve so steep, that i don't think i've ever heard a single player on voicechat who didn't sound at least 18. usually they sound more like, cough cough, my age range. that's a nice change from something like Rust where little babies are everywhere.

I was over 500 hours when I stopped playing. The fear and anxiety of seeing other players was matched but the excitement and joy of finding an awesome gun. Have not found another game that replicates those feelings
