Samsung Display’s ‘Unbreakable Panel’ Certified by Underwriters Laboratories

Samsung has received Underwriters Laboratories certification for a bendable/unbreakable OLED smartphone panel. This panel was dropped from a height of 1.2 meters 26 times in succession and it didn't break or crack and continued working. They even tested the panel from a height of 1.8M and it didn't suffer any damage and kept working. I don't know what anybody else thinks, but this is amazing and Samsung is really going to reap the benefits of this panel in their products. I wonder if they'll sell any to Apple?

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company.
 
As if none of you would put a screen protector on it anyway. Calm yourselves. Let the innovation flow through you.

I agree. The ultimate test should be how it takes a Nunchuk to the face at 80 MPH.

The screen protector should come from the factory, not something the end user needs to add themselves.
 
Drop the screen with a complete phone attached to it and I'll be impressed. You could drop a bare iPhone screen too and it's unlikely to break because of its low mass and air resistance.

And glass is glass even if it is gorilla glass 1million and 1. Plastic can be made very resistant to scratching. I have also personally seen a glass material that flexes quite a bit with out breaking. How ever it is not very good optically While yeh you can read printed text through it it looks foggy. Also if you flex it really fast it breaks. It would not be to terribly hard to put some sort of micro glass beads in to a plastic substrate to add some pretty substantial scratch resistance to plastic. Hell it has already been done some decades ago infact. But it would not be very good for a phone display least not that stuff it had a bumpy texture you could feel with your finger tips. I do not think we are to many years from seeing a plastic that flexes like what it is with scratch resistance of a level 6 or 7 hardness like gorilla glass. That does not mean it can not break and we would still not see a end to broken screens but it would become much more difficult.
