Which is the best messaging platform in your opinion, and why?

Same thing here in Finland. Everyone uses WhatsApp no matter which platform.

Same in Brazil. (My fiance is Brazilian)

I get the impression this is the case most places outside the U.S. and China (and maybe Russia now too)

Never heard anyone using iMessage here.

Well, iMessage is integrated into the SMS app on iPhones. If you have an iPhone and you send an SMS to someone else with an iPhone it automatically uses iMessage. Lots of people probably use it without even realizing they are doing so.

Quite simple, on android it's stock google messages, especially now, when it's launched on web.

Other than that, I like telegram for privacy.

Signal third but the source code for server is not released so is likely CIA fuckery (like the rest) and cannot be trusted.
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server

Doesn't matter anyway, there's no way to verify that they're actually using that code on the server.
Since the app is end-to-end encrypted - and you can verify that the app is build from the publish source - the CIA at least cannot read your messages.

That leaves metadata.
Metadata is far more dangerous than most people believe.
There is a small chance that three-letter agencies collect metadata from Signal and any other messaging service they can coerce.

But what's the alternative?
Telecom companies are definitely collecting metadata on calls and text messages (SMS) and share them with three-letter agencies. We know that for a fact. And calls and text messages are not even end-to-end encrypted.
So that is the least privacy conscious solution.

With the messengers, at least we can hope they're not collaborating.
So which one to choose?
We know for a fact that Google and Facebook are mining everything they can on us, which rules them out from the start.

I guess the most secure solution is to choose a messenger from an antagonistic jurisdiction.
As a U.S. citizen who is not a high value target, there's no reason to assume the Russians would want to create a profile on you. So Telegram would be your app. It's probably highly unlikely that the NSA could get a Russian court to force Telegram to hand over their metadata on you.
Conversely, if you're a Russian citizen, going with Signal may be your best choice.

When it comes to trust Signal >>>>>>>>> Telegram and it's not even close. But I'd still take Telegram over SMS

Thanks, I didn't realize Google implemented a web interface until I read what you wrote. And yes, it is very nice. I composed a text message to myself and dragged and dropped a photo onto the PC web page, it appeared on my phone within 5 seconds. Same ease when I sent a small mp3 file too.

Glad you like it. I find it very useful too.

I guess my take is, the best messaging service is the one people you want to talk to are using.

I'm not sold on any of them. Honestly I prefer to avoid messaging all together, but that's not the world we live in anymore. So with that in mind, I prefer plain old SMS, just because it is universal. In certain circles WhatsApp is dominant, so I use that to communicate with those people.

Someone recently tried to get me to sign up for something called Marco Polo. I refused. I already had them as a contact on WhatsApp, and my philosophy is the fewer apps on my phone the better. (fewer shady special interests to spy on me and collect my data)
