Apple has replaced their old recycling robot with a new one called Daisy. Daisy has the capability of disassembling 200 iPhones an hour. During the process Daisy also sorts all of the parts and puts those aside that have valuable materials that can be recycled. If you think about this it's a really good process for Apple and the environment. The more minerals that are recycled means less mining overall has to get these minerals in the first place (in theory). Also, this means less harmful scrap is sent to third world countries to pollute their environment. Check out the robot below.

Watch the video here.

Apple’s newest disassembly robot, Daisy, is the most efficient way to reclaim more of the valuable materials stored in iPhone. Created through years of R&D, Daisy incorporates revolutionary technology based on Apple’s learnings from Liam, its first disassembly robot launched in 2016.

I'm surprised they didn't go with their prototype.

Could someone give me a breakdown on what the valuable materials in a phone are? Just curious.

Copper, gold, silver, palladium, and platinum are just some of the materials used not just in phones but lots of electronics. The big reason to recycle though, is for rare earth metals mostly from the batteries and I think from the screens too.

So, at 200/hr, that thing chews through 1.75m iPhones a year. Which means Apple'd only need about 120 to close the loop on the product lifecycle.

Interesting.

I imagine that at least half of old iPhones go straight into the trash so they need to provide some kind of incentive for owners if they want this to work.

Europe got that pretty much figured out...just make a law. There is too much nasty shit in a phone just to go into a landfill. We don't allow lead acid batteries in a landfill...not sure why a phone would be any different.

yes, because no one has ever thrown away something that shouldn't be thrown away.... man, laws just fix everything, can't wait until they make a law against heroine...

At least Apple is closing the loop. No other manufactuer gives a shit what happens to their products once they are sold
