Nikkei Asian Review is reporting that during Tim Cook's fourth appearance in China in a year, that Apple now has 27 China-based suppliers, up from 19 in 2017. Chinese manufacturers account for 13.5% of Apple's total suppliers, and if you add Hong Kong-based suppliers to those numbers, they go to 36 suppliers, or 18% of the total in 2018. In comparison Apple is currently using 39 U.S-based suppliers, down from 43 in 2017.

Makes me wonder what percentage of the parts apple uses come from each supplier.

"What I have seen during my lifetime is that countries that embrace openness, that embrace trade, that embrace diversity are the countries that do exceptionally," Apple boss Cook said in a panel discussion on March 24 during the China Development Forum, an annual event that helps Western companies build connections with Beijing officials.

Dear Apple, China is very disturbed that you would called out "Taiwan" as a "where"... it's just China (all is China, or soon will be).

Apple could care less about it. China is still in their wet dreams as usual.

"What I have seen during my lifetime is that countries that embrace openness, that embrace trade, that embrace diversity are the countries that do exceptionally,"

Especially when they embrace brutal communism and slave labor in addition to practicing xenophobia in everything else but what brings them money.

Although I believe he was (likely) suggesting that the other side (China) could learn a thing or two from our side (US/EU), his words still ring out as mostly hollow or hypocritical (as I suggest in my post above). I also point out in my post above how many vaunted Asian cultures (and in fact most are) quite homogeneous by any standard, that is to say not very "diverse." You mention xenophobia here and I reply because I enjoy the advantage of having read a lot of history about the region and one thing many people may not appreciate is how racist the Chinese are and, more specifically, how aggressive the Han have been in eliminating people outside their culture in China. Here we have arguably what will be the most economically relevant country in the current century being quite the opposite of embracing openness, trade, and diversity, and this dingo-head is basically trying to suggest it's okay Apple does more business with them because they'll eventually come around to our way of thinking. This from the CEO of the largest technology company in the world. These aren't smart people, folks.

that is to say not very "diverse."

but your missing what he is MEANING.... He says "diversity" and you take it to mean its population.. But what he means is.. diversity of who they TRADE with.. LOL

now with that meaning,

those that embrace diversity(of trade) are the countries that do exceptionally

see.. now that makes perfect sense.

BS statistic. It is showing where the company is headquartered. For example Foxconn is headquartered in Taiwan, but almost all production is in China.

If they took those same companies and showed factory location by country, I'd guess that >75% is China.

yes, i agree. and they are studying and even prefer to move there. i have found some info about Chinese investments to Europe. For example, chineese invest a lot in a property in Greece, because there are many very good programs for foreigners who want to buy a real estate or business in Greece. I read a good article about this https://tranio.com/articles/greeces-influx-of-chinese-capital_5460/ Who knows maybe escape of chineese citisens to EU would make their goverment less strict.

Wealthy Chinese have been buying up real estate across NA and in the EU for quite a while now, largely to keep the money off-shore and untouchable by the Chinese government (and the prevalence of cryptocurrency there is related to this phenomenon). It's largely not to live but as an investment (as you state) and it's caused a lot of problems in some areas, for example the west coasts of the US and Canada; spiking real estate prices without tenants (or rather, the places are leased/rented out) is creating a situation where a housing collapse in China would have major political ramifications, but I digress. Unfortunately I would not say these wealthy Chinese are turning over a new leaf - they do often educate their children in the West (we see how that worked for Jong-un) but by far and large they're known to be terrible tourists, racist in general (as I mentioned in a post above, specifically feeling superior to others), and their interest in democracy is thoroughly selfish (which is not unique to them, of course). It does encourage their home government to think twice as they do not want too much money to move out of the country but as it stands the middle class is still culturally stranded.
