Destiny 2 PC Beta Players Up in Arms over Gamepad Controller Aim Assist

Gamers are begging Bungie to fix or remove aim assist from Destiny 2. Apparently, it’s super aggressive, giving controllers a huge advantage over mouse and keyboard: gamepad users can simply spray fire in a player's general direction and get a kill every time. One streamer has documented his experience of adding aim assist to M/KB with XIM4.

It's certainly really weird to even consider that gamepad owners would have an advantage over mouse & keyboard players in a FPS on PC, but there it is. We can certainly understand how annoying and unskillful this can be, and we're hoping that Bungie tone down the aim assist in the general release of the PC version. We weren't personally planning on touching PvP with a giant drill-shaped bargepole anyway, but this certainly would've made the experience even more humiliating for us.

This has to be Crucible specific as it certainly doesn't seem to be the case in PvE. I tested it out last night with an Xbox pad and while it has light assist, it in no way lines up head shots for you. It seems to aim for center mass by default, and it's situational.

Definitely has my pre-order cancellation on the line. I'm not a *huge* PVP-er but leaving in this game would essentially mean for me that I wouldn't play that part of the game (as I purchased this game specifically to play with kb+m on PC). Using a controller is totally fine, and to each their own, but ffs auto assist? L2AIM scrubs?

As far as PvE goes, I didn't test it yet personally with my own controller, and I don't own a XIM4, but I didn't notice anyone realling KILLING it - in fact I played through the strike mission 5 times last night and was pretty much always top of the kill charts in every way -- I never noticed someone just absolutely annihiliating things in PvE. But watching a couple of PvP twitch streams, it definitely looks like it's pretty OP.

Lots of irony: Now KBM PC users get a taste of how it feels to be on the other side of this coin. (I'm primarily a PC gamer saying this. ;) )

This has to be fixed. I'm not going to be big into PVP myself but still: This could ruin it very quickly and if that goes down, the overall prospects and life for this game and series on the PC also goes down.

XIM4 owners will destroy with ease if this doesn't get fixed. Some of the PVP Twitch and youtube footage is truly laugh out loud worthy.

You don't even need a XIM4. You can spoof a controller by using a combination of freely available programs, like Joy2Key with X360CE.

Really enjoyed the beta and almost pre-ordered, in fact was going to look for game keys today first. Yeah, this is horrible news. I'm not going to play against aim-bots. I'll have to cancel my plans to purchase this game now. Bummer.

That's what I was thinking. Don't the Destiny 2 developers understand that we can fake mice as gamepads? So you can have the benefits of the precision of a mouse plus aimbot. Gamepads shouldn't have aimbot and they should encourage players to use mice and keyboard. The console era is over and they should embrace PC way of life.

If anything, there's an entire generation of gamers that laugh at the idea of gaming with a typewriter pad. Gamepads aren't going anywhere. That doesn't mean they need to have complete auto-aim.
I'm pretty sure this is strictly a Crucible thing and it's strictly in the beta. It isn't in Destiny 1 and it isn't in the normal game for Destiny 2. Hell, it's probably a goof based upon how strong it appears to be.

There's cross play with Destiny 2? Otherwise, I don't see why console players be caring.

I remembered in Destiny 1 there was an option to disable aim assist. The magnetic pulling of the cursor really sucks while trying to pull a sniper shot off. They don't have this as an option this time around?

Hopefully this and the mouse polling rate issues get fixed before release. As was stated, that's what betas are for.

Personally I play PC games to not use a controller, unless it's a title created with controller use in mind and it makes sense to use one for it; I've never used a controller for a shooter on PC though.

For those that haven't had the issue, I ended up finding out for myself before I started searching, that if your mouse polling rate was set high (I use 1000 reports per second) the cursor would stutter horribly, and even stick at certain points, making aiming damn near impossible. Turning the polling rate down to 500 fixed the issue for me.

ill add my 2cents, being i own a xim4 for use on my ps4 as i prefer K/M type input to play fps, while im pretty good in pvp with native k/m in this game, i decided to test xim4 on pc with the beta this week and kills tippled, i went from about 4.0 KD to 11.0 KD using xim4 on pc, the AA is just retarded good, it auto snaps to the player head, and i was droping people 3 to 1 with ease, iv never felt the xim4 as unfair when used on consoles, since i suck with a controller and it puts me about even on ps4 in D1, being everyone has aim assist there, but on pc i defiantly felt like i was cheating, the only draw back is your turn speed is far worse with xim, but u can make up for that by just playing smart and using the AA to your advantage

They need to allow turning aim assist off, as well as have games where it's not allowed. I play on Xbox, and it was a pain in the ass while sniping. Hang on. IIRC *checks something*....I thought so...aim assist is a weapon stat in the game smh...check out this weapon stat sheet. I wonder how this will affect game balance. I also wonder if this will make Bungie say "This is too much work, screw 'em".

When a game developer views you like this, "Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.". It's time to stop paying them. Just sayin......

Luckily that was not the complaint.

They do. This is for people on the PC who just plugs in a controller and start pawning people with KB/M.

I'll be curious to see how they address this. Aim assist is a weapons stat tied to the sight you're using.

IE: In D1 a hand cannon with "Suresight IS" yields "strong target acquisition" what this means is the weapon is a bit "stickier" when ADS and tracking targets. It's part pf the "space magic" lore.

However, if you watch skilled gamepad users, you see they don't need it. After years of D1 on Xbox playing on PC was fun and frustrating. I was super potato until I got used to mouse/keyboard again.

That's how "users can simply spray fire in a player's general direction and get a kill every time" has to work. Normal center mass shots don't kill that fast. It would have to be inserting random head shots which it doesn't currently do in the normal (non-crucible) PvE version of the game. It doesn't do it in Destiny 1 either. Try it - it doesn't do it.

I didn't even know this was thing, and I have like 400-500 hours between the PS4 and X1 versions. No wonder I hit a skill barrier...

Well, I'd look to see what Bungie does about it first. If they care as much about the PvP in D2 as they did in D1 they'll fix it quickly. As someone who loathes PvP in games such as COD, etc. I actually loved the PvP in Destiny 1. They encourage you to play the PvP by offering an easier means of getting legendary gear, etc. (It drops more often per unit time of playing.) Also, your drops do not improve by being better at PvP, but rather simply being rewarded for participating.

I bet they wouldn't be up in arms if Blizzard wasn't involved in Destiny 2. Blizzard = no artificial aiming.

Don't underestimate the value of not missing. Reference: see overwatch'es soldier 76 ultimate. Zero headshots, will wipe teams.

Compare player population performance across both camps, and bell curve the aim assist to make it match.
