Bill Gates has given away 64 million Microsoft shares, reducing his stake in the company to 1.3 percent: it’s the largest donation he has made since 2000. The shares are valued at $4.6 billion, though it is unclear who the lucky recipient was.

Bill and Melinda Gates have given away about $35 billion of stock and cash since 1994, based on the value of the shares at the time of gifts, according to a review of two decades worth of Gates Foundation tax returns, annual reports and regulatory filings. Gates created the Giving Pledge in 2010 with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and the pair have been joined by 168 others who’ve promised to give the majority of their wealth to charity.

This is why i have always respected Bill Gate and his family. This guys gives so much back and is actively trying to change things for the good. Regardless of what MS does, he still trying to make things right.

Nice ... in before hipster conservative millennial liberal baby boomer bashers!

It woulda been cool if he offered a share per person in the us of a.

Aren't most charities just tax havens for the people who donate to and run them?

You must know next to nothing about Bill Gates who is one of the greatest philanthropists in the world.

He's championed tons of projects focused on education, disease, clean drinking water in areas that don't have it, etc etc etc.

He's also worked with Warren Buffett on this:

cool, i surely woudnt mind a few more african people like Charlize Theron and Candice Swanepoel in the planet :p

b-b-but STEVE JOBS is the greatest man of all time. He hath bestowed upon us the Iphone, which has cured world hunger and starvation in order to feed us daily doses of social media.

Bill gates is a greedy asshole!

Now that's pretty good. That actually shows up on the radar. His previous donations I heard about were comparable to me giving 1$ to someone in relation to his net worth, but this is like 5% of it.

Quite a few are. The Gate's foundation is the real deal though. Their foundation passes the funds around in addition to all the work they do.
Bill Gates can do what he wants with his money. But he needs to stop pretending to be a philanthropist. The Gates Foundation has invested billions of dollars in companies who do the exact opposite of what the Foundation is supposedly trying to accomplish.

The Foundation has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in oil companies whose operations in Africa are responsible for much of the pollution causing respiratory problems and other afflictions among the local population.

The Gates Foundation has investments in sixty-nine of the worst polluting companies in the US and Canada. It holds investments in pharmaceutical companies whose drugs cost far beyond what most patients around the world can afford and the Foundation often lobbies on behalf of those companies for "Intellectual Property" protections that make obtaining low cost medicines more difficult.

Other companies in the Foundation’s portfolio have been accused of causing thousands of people to lose their homes, supporting child labor and defrauding and neglecting patients in need of medical care.

Gates created the Giving Pledge in 2010 with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and the pair have been joined by 168 others who’ve promised to give the majority of their wealth to charity.
From 2010 to today, Bill Gates net worth has gone from $50 Billion to $90 Billion. So "giving away the majority of their wealth to charity" . . . not so much.

Gates has made pledges to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International to fight polio in the past. Polio is almost eradicated. Malaria is in one disease which is next. Gates is on the leading edge. And yes, I am a Rotarian.

They has donated $35 billion dollars of his own money since 1994. Just because his stock in MS continues to increase each year how can you fault him for it? He could be like every other rich "elite" and say F everyone else I will keep it all to myself. I still like seeing someone who can afford to help out actually help out. Not all charities are legit, I understand that, but I'm pretty sure his intention is not to f&*% up the world through these charities on purpose.

He donated the 35 billion to Buffet and then Buffet donated it back to him, fulfilling their "Giving Pledge".

very generous Bill, but for once, how about giving 4 billion people $1M each. you will satisfied a lot of people. You just need to create a form, and 4Billions lucky randomly people would be picked :)

If he did that inflation would skyrocket and you'd be lucky to buy a Toyota Carola for $2million.

Because he doesn't have 4 quadrillion dollars which is more money than exists on the planet?

"Frosty Melon Boy" isn't going to fund itself. It's expensive for Bill to talk to us through our mice. (Old HardOCP joke from way back!)

Let's not forget, he got all that cash by devious marketing methods, and driving any competitors out of business in some cases, stealing their technology in others. This guy is no philanthropist. If he wants to 'give back', how about giving some of that money back to all the people he got it from. How many times did people have to keep buying new computers because of windows rot, which they absolutely refuse to fix (found another windows problem that apparently no one in microsoft knows how to fix: Intstalled M$ movie maker, and the sound cuts out. Look for a fix, there isn't one. And this is Microsoft software on a Microsoft OS).
Like so many other rich folks that do this either due to the guilt of having been real pricks for so long, or trying to win admiration from the public after being known to be pricks for so long, let's not forget who he is, and what he's done to get where he is. It's not even finally doing the right thing for all the customers who M$ has screwed over the years, because none of THEM are getting anything. They make a big deal about Windows 10 being free to upgrade, and all it turns out to be, is a huge data theft trick. Nothing ever changes.

Philanthropist, my ass.
