AMD’s Vega & Ryzen “Capsaicin & Cream” Live Event

Kyle didn't say Polaris or Vega can deliver a great VR experience. He used Ryzen as a fall back without causing a dumpster fire.
But he also said "at least we can't call BS on Ryzen later"....burn.

No, you broke it for me but hey, common sense was not your strong suit, eh? Of course, I really do not give two shits after all what you think, I go there, here, Guru3d, Techpowerup, Overclock.net, and a few other sites and that will not change. Amazing how AMD is now doing good and suddenly, H is the go to place for good information on them from their forum goers? Last I checked, except for the site owner and a handful of folks here, H was nothing but a bash AMD site day after day.

Oh well, enjoy living in your bubble.

I cant entertain AMD and VR in the same sentence.
They have delivered very little and bullshitted so much about it.
I no longer want to watch anything they host for fear of being infected by what they preach.
From what has been written here the experience reflected that in the end.
Honestly sad Kyle got dragged in.
The only good part is how he is a stand up guy for what he believes in and VR is worthy. Just not with what AMD make.

Just because Kyle is getting friendly with AMD again doesn't mean it will change his methodologies, or be "dragged into" anything.

VR requires maintaining 90fps, so as long as you can hit an 11ms frame render time, you can have a good VR experience. AMD doesn't really have anything that does this today, but whose to say Vega won't?

Yet.

Don't judge an unreleased product. Sure their existing products suck for VR but no one knows what the future holds. You'll either be proven right or wrong.

We'll all find out in a few days.
I havent judged an unreleased product, I stated my case very clearly.
They released products and bullshitted prolifically about their VR ability.
Kyle rightly commented on it in his VR reviews.
I dont trust AMDs word even slightly, and that they deserve,

I agree with you to a certain extent.

Over the last few years AMD's publicity and marketing efforts have often been intentionally misleading, and they have often had a hostile approach towards anyone who called them out on it, which is one of the many reasons Kyle wasn't sampled by them for some time.

(Before this next part, just let me make excruciatingly clear that I have no inside knowledge about this at all, I am just guessing based on the public information out there. My function here is that I post news, that's all I do, other than that I am a forum member like the rest of you)

I feel like this has been Roy Taylor's influence on the organization, and it seems clear to me that he has lost out in the recent environment of things, or there is no way that Kyle would have been on that stage today. Roy's boss, Raja, whom Kyle met with a couple of weeks back, as he posted in the forums, must have instructed him that they were making nice with Kyle.

I feel this demonstrates a shift away from the Roy way of doing things. Of course, this is easier to do when you have a winning product on your hands, but still, it is a good thing to see, and I'm hoping that AMD will return to being the good guy underdog they have been for most of their existence.

I cant be convinced that easily.
The VR stuff was when I stopped trying to give them some credit, they had been posting crap a long time before that was cringeworthy, this wasnt a one off.
For a company to publish such utter rubbish for headlines and marketing means that this came from high up.
A lot of people will have been involved.
I think Roy is a symptom of what they allow.
Their attitude toward Kyle for stating the truth is further evidence, that couldnt have been Roys doing.

Would you like some cheese with that whine.

Can't wait for the reviews. I won't believe anything until I see it but it would be nice if true.

Please explain how bashing Reddit, the armpit, no, the dirty butt-hole of the internet, means I lack common sense?

Like you I go elsewhere too for information. Just not Reddit. My common sense tells me Not to trust dirty butt-holes.

Probably a good idea. I use reddit. Wouldn't want to contaminate yourself with Tawnos. Hell, I suggest you get off [H] since you're scared about "butt-holes", we're full-up here.

I'm not scared of butt-holes. A few on this site but as a whole, this site is a much cleaner butt-hole.

Smart move by AMD ask the person most likely to call them on their BS non announcement to be a speaker.

To be fair, major shows don't always align with when you are ready to launch a new product, but you are still kind of expected to be there, so they can't always have major announcements at these things.

They touched upon some interesting topics during the presentation, but I would have liked to see some more geeky details, like - for instance - how does this High Bandwidth Cache work?

Yar, hard not to be disappointed here. The way Raja was commenting about the after party (and its timing) I thought for sure we'd hear something exciting. And with Kyle being at their event schmoozing and whatnot - we don't even get any of his snarky commentary to amuse us on the forum. :-(

On their twitter feed they're showcasing Ryzen systems combined with 2x RX 480s at the party... where that Vega love?

Hm if AMD can make something better or super close to the 1080Ti with competitive pricing I will move back at the end of the year when I plan on buying a VR headset.

Even if it is 30% it is a year later compared to 1080. That's not a win in anyway. By the time Vega finally hits Volta will be here.

If so, that's enough to compete with the 1080Ti which just dropped.. Volta ain't coming this year at high end if they just launched the Ti plus Volta is only 16nm..

Well Kyle, my mouth hung open when I saw you on stage. I was REALLY surprised. (y)

Glad to see a link to the presentation up on the front page. Couldn't watch the streaming event yesterday.

I am a great fan of AMD (fanboi?), but I do not enjoyed being misled.

You could tell from the presenters, all of them including Kyle, that they had to choose their words oh so carefully.

Don't get me wrong, Kyle was there obviously to promote his new gig, but he had to choose his words also when it came to addressing AMD's message.

I think that was the right thing to do. Don't shit on your hosts party! Have your drink, say goodnight, stay loyal, go home, jerk off, and that is all you need to do!

I don't quite get this rush to love for VR......

To me, you are looking to cater to a real niche of a niche.

From what I can gather, to have a good VR experience, you will need a killer PC and then add another 7 or 8 hundred dollars for the headset and equipment.

There just aren't enough folks ready for this, let alone any killer titles to make me want to do this.

Plus how are folks who make money on gaming....ie Twitch.....going to broadcast their stuff when it's confined to a VR headset?

A lot of "ifs " here........alot more than say EyeFinity or Surround, which was adopted by quite a lot of folks.

Good luck.....Inside VR

You know whenever AMD was about to release a major product, NVIDIA countered the next day with slightly better specs &| pricing. The lack of details this time could be a fake out by AMD to see where NVIDIA is going to lay their cards so AMD can adjust their specs and pricing to be more competitive.

It could be said that GDC is a really important event. One that rallies developers to your side or not. They are the ones that build what we are after, great gaming.

I was really disappointed after seeing the different level of excitement between the developers in the AMD vs NVidia sessions.

Not a good thing when like me, I want to get the most out of my AMD cards.

Have you ever tried on a good PC based VR headset in a decent title? It really does blow you away. The experience is transformative. I would agree with the criticism that a lot of the titles that exist today are a little silly, and reminiscent of Wii games, but that isn't going to be the case forever. In this generation you need a pretty badass PC in order to render the 90fps required for a good VR experience, but we are still in the first generation.

As we all know, what costs a fortune one generation becomes more and more mainstream with every generation that passes. My Kepler Titan cost me $1000 in early 2013. Today it is blown away by a $160 RX470 and narrowly beaten by a $140 1050Ti in most titles. It won't be long before a low-mid end gaming PC will handle VR well. That, and as volumes grow and adoption becomes more and more mainstream, the price of decent headsets will fall. Just on Monday HTC announced a 0% financing option for the Vive for $66 per month for 12 months, making it easier to afford for most people.

Make no mistake, VR is coming. I don't think it will be long before it is the dominant form of PC gaming. As Kyle predicted in his video, 2017 will probably be the year that turns the mainstream gaming thought about VR from one of "oh, that's a cute, but expensive toy, I'll just focus on my real serious gaming" to "wow, VR really is the next big thing". While I am not 100% ready to jump in on VR myself yet, I believe him. Having tried the experience myself, as well as seeing my 73 year old mother-in-law gasp and chuckle with excitement when I put the headset on her, I can say with some confidence that I don't believe this is the next "3D TV" or "motion controller" type fad, that will die away. I truly believe VR will not only become big, but that in relative short order it will become the way MOST people play games.

Also consider this. One of the reasons HardOCP has had such staying power over the years is that it got into the PC Hardware and Gaming review site thing early on. Many have comne and gone since. If you wan't to be one of the leading voices on a subject, you have to get in early. You can't wait until something is already a mainstream success. Just look at all the Youtube streamers. There are lots of early ones doing it before anyone else was who are massive successes. There are very few later copycats doing as well at it.

I find it funny that people keep saying that Kyle is no longer on the out with AMD...I think the opposite is true. Kyle is a man of principal and integrity. If AMD was still being a bunch of shits I very much doubt Kyle would give them the time of day.

The way I see it is that AMD is a big company. Not as big as Intel, but still a big company. In any big company there are going to be some shits, but also some good people. I think Kyle is reasonable, and not opposed to working with the good people in AMD, of which Raja Koduri appears to be one.

(Again, my standard disclaimer here is, I am drawing these conclusions on my own. I'm not privy to inside knowledge, I just post news)

I agree.

It was a no win situation for either side.
Kyle needs to be able to demonstrate the true worth of new products in a timely fashion and have many sources of information.
AMD need reputable sites and editors like Kyle to show off new products that are sure to perform well and to give a bit of build up hype.
This even more so when nobody can believe what AMD themselves say, they properly shot themselves in the foot.

Symbiotic relationship.
And why not make it work well if possible.
Kudos to both for the effort.
Hopefully its a permanent shift in the way AMD deals with the public.
But the Roys need to go.

Raja said, AMD are ahead of NVIDIA, VEGA is targeting Volta.

Admittedly, that's a pretty lofty goal, now that NVIDIA has revealed that GTX 1080 Ti will be faster than Titan XP at stock clocks (and have priced it accordingly at $699 for the FE).
Hopefully, that means good news for us video card purchasers.
