i7-7700k or wait for Skylake-X? Looking for opinions

Hello all, just looking for informed opinions here.

I have an i7-3770k on an Asus P8z77-v and an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW on 2x 27" S2716DG GSync monitors...I mostly do casual WoW and FPS games or lite video editing when I am not working on school stuff.

My rig is about 3 years old now, and since I usually upgrade every 18 months I am chomping at the bit to get something new.

My question is, do I go for Kaby Lake, or wait to see what Skylake-X is all about? My assumptions are the Kaby Lake will give me about 33% performance improvement on CPU, but that probably will not translate to much improvement overall in gaming.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Cain

Personally i'd wait for Ryzen to be released, if its good enough you have more of a choice and maybe cheaper prices from intel. If its not, at least you'll know you made the right choice

I had not even considered Ryzen to be honest, mostly for reasons in the far past. I suppose it's probably worth waiting a few months. Honestly I was really hoping someone had information about Skylake-X that could help me justify the wait.

The old waiting game question . . . . both will be great pick the board with the best options , pick the processor for your needs. 2 cores are amazing at this point for games. . . so every core after that tell me something, your going to have it doing lol. it's like a job would you hire 8 employees for a job that only needs 4 fast employees just to say you could afford it

I watched this, it kept me from wanting to upgrade. They have other videos of overclocked performance also.

Of course there are newer and more demanding games out, as always it is up to you if it is worth the upgrade.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/01/13/kaby_lake_7700k_vs_sandy_bridge_2600k_ipc_review/4 that assumption is at least double the reality. The truth is, you should do nothing unless you are hitting some walls. That CPU is strong. And, may I ask, if you are only updating every 18 months where have you found an 1080 in 2015 :D ?

Heh, I just bought the 1080, and I skipped my last platform upgrade because college is not cheap.

I haven't really hit any walls per se, but I used to be a bleeding edge adopter so having the same computer for 3 years makes it feel ancient.

I think I have decided to wait until Black Friday and just go balls deep and buy top of the line everything. 7950x (or whatever skylake-x ends up being numbered) with 1080ti SLI, a couple 960 EVO Pros, 128gb of ram and 2 more of those sweet, sweet Dell S2716DG monitors. (Thank goodness for Newegg Credit Card lol)

That's amazing, how in the world do they benchmark like that I wonder?

I had a 26 or was it 2700k regardless I went from that to a 7700. My video card was a 1070. I gained no shit.. 100fps at 1080p everything at max in WOW (depending on the zone of course. The newer ones not so much.)

Still running a 3770 I got years ago in my Dell XPS 8500.
I wanted it to be the last thing I needed to upgrade, and I haven't seen anything to convince me to switch yet.

Get a 7700K and fast memory and go unless you want to wait and pay for SKL-X in august:)

I've got a 3770k since 2012....I always play the waiting game crap and here we go again.... Skylake X hopes to come out in August....New Chipset too.....If I upgrade now to a 7700k, of course I will cry in 5 months....THEN, what do I do with my 980 Ti's in SLI in August. Of course I will want to upgrade to the 1080 Ti's....BUT wait.....

Holy shit VOLTA is right around the corner....... Shit man....I love tech evolution and Moore's law, but I wish these manufacturers could stay on somewhat of a straight line path and release their upgrades with some fluidity....

Point being is I'd like to upgrade and build a whole new rig, and not get butt hurt knowing if I only would have waited a few more months. I could have got the best yet...Sometimes I think these asshole manufacturers do this crap on purpose!!! I'm done...I'm gonna go pull my panties out mah my ass crack now
