According to this article, the increased demand for smartphone memory caused by the Galaxy Note 7 recall could impact the production of PC memory, leading to delays unless suppliers increase capacity to meet demand.

With smartphone vendors having been aggressively placing short-term orders for the fourth quarter, several component suppliers have been delaying their shipments to PC vendors recently and the action could relatively impact these PC vendors' shipments in the quarter. To satisfy demand from its smartphone clients, many memory component suppliers have shifted their capacity for PC memory to produce memory for smartphones, which has seriously delayed their delivery schedules from 10 weeks to over 20 weeks. Since memory components require a series of certifications and testing, the suppliers are unlikely to be able to shorten the delay.

Figures.

One of the reasons I haven't charged ahead and upgraded is the expense of buying all new DDR4 ram, and now it will likely get even more expensive...

I doubt ddr4 is being used in phones, that's overkill.

Shows what you know.

RAMalicious: 5 phones and tablets with DDR4 RAM memory tech

That's from last year. Every single high-end phone this year is using DDR4. Because GPUs to power 1080p/1440p displays COMPETENTLY IN GAMES are bandwidth hogs, and using more than a 64 to 128-bit bus gets expensive quick on a tiny handheld PCB.

Obviously the power consumption is not an issue (or else the S6/s7 battery life would have tanked), so yes, DDR4 orders are all targeted at smart phones first now.

I'm glad to see someone benefits from the note 7 debacle.

I don't see any skyrocket, you can pick up 16GB right now for around $80, that is cheap compared to years ago.

That's normal and happens with every new generation of RAM.

Yep, as major manufacturers shift over to DDR4 faster than demand ceases for DDR3. Happens every generation.

The redeeming factor here is that it makes it easier for those of us looking to sell our old RAM when we upgrade to a DDR4 platform :p

RAM has been cheap for months. 16 GB of DDR4 could be had for $65 or so. Buy it soon before it spikes.

Nah. I'm not going to buy RAM before I have a system to out it in.

I'm holding off to see what Zen looks like before I upgrade. My Sandy-E 3930k is still a champ at 4.8Ghz, so there is no immediate rush. If DDR4 is expensive come January, I'll just wait it out.
