Last week the rumor was that Disney was interested in buying Twitter. This week the rumor is that Disney is interested in buying Netflix. I can't wait until next week to find out who Disney is interested in buying.

Recent reports that Disney wants to pop Netflix in its shopping basket have sent the streaming company’s shares upward, with a 4.1% increase in active trading on Monday, MarketWatch notes. But if there is a discussion going on, Netflix isn’t commenting, saying the company doesn’t weigh in on rumors. A Disney spokesperson wasn’t available for comment to MarketWatch, either.

My gawd, those jacked ticket prices must be working if they afford a serious spending spree like this.

Doesn't sound so crazy, between Netflix, Marvel and Pixar and Lucas, Disney would have the young adult market locked-up, and a sizable portion of kids.

How many old people do you know who watch Netflix? This is an opportune time to catch one wave while the other is waning. They already have a distribution deal with Netflix anyway, they might as well get a more direct cut, and more control over things.

Let's not forget that Disney has a "point of view" on matters relating to intellectual property law.

Then we could get those Netflix action figures and merchandise we all desperately need.

Why would disney turn netflix from a profitable business that PAYS them money to something that they manage that costs them money? The money angle is bullshit. Unless they get a mega bargain, that investment would not pay them back for probably 10 years just as competition for licensing is increasing, and thus netflix will have to engage in more bidding wars.

The only money argument I can think of would be as a tax write off for a banner year of starwars, pixar, and MCU releases.

They buy them so that a competitor can not?

This makes perfect sense. Disney already offers content to every relevant consuming demographic, not just young adults.

Disney is thinking longer term than most of us, they want to corner the entertainment market place for all demographics, becoming the single largest content provider in the world. They don't really care about how long it takes to make that money back, because when you control the market it doesn't matter.

The company's main entertainment holdings include Walt Disney Studios, Disney Music Group, Disney Theatrical Group, Disney-ABC Television Group, Radio Disney, ESPN Inc., Disney Interactive, Disney Consumer Products, Disney India Ltd., The Muppets Studio,Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Studios, UTV Software Communications, Lucasfilm, and Maker Studios.

Add in their resorts and joint ventures, I wouldn't be surprised to see Disney investing far and wide with an eye to future take overs.

I'd hate it more, but they are making some good things these days and the reality is there is little we can do when things you want to see are owned by the same firm and are being done with quality.

Maybe next week Disney will be interested in buying itself, like Warner Bros cease and desisted itself.
