Which GTX 1080? Gigabyte xtreme gaming vs Zotac amp extreme

Man thats impressive. I think you hit silicone jackpot. Its showing only 1.062v at that speed. Did you boost voltage at all?

Yeah, like you say, i'm pretty certain about the silicon lottery, just been really lucky for a change. As regards the voltage, EVGA PrecisionXoc just increased the voltage automatically without any input from me. All I did was increase the core clock by 80mhz and nothing more. although it's impressive the final result is only a tiny increase in frame rates so it makes you wonder if it's really worth the bother, time and effort just for the sake of an extra 10fps max. I need to do some more testing as regards frame rates etc and a comparison from default to max clock just to confirm etc.

What's really impressive is Doom 2016 using the Vulcan API maxed out settings at 1080p and the constant frame rate of 200fps and using Fraps also it topped @ 206fps, even online gaming. Now this is the thing, at the time of all these tests I have 2 browsers open with around 80+ tabs open + many other things running in the background and this is not a clean install, it's an install from when windows 10 first came out but I am runnning raid stripe and using a 5960x clocked cpu and that helps a lot so all in all it's quite impressive. It will be interesting to find out what Score etc on a clean install. In a few months I will do this as I purchased the Asus x99 Delux usb3.1 and install that to replace my MSI Gaming 7 and then will go through all this again just to see.....I will post results here once I do.

My card seems to pretty well tap out above 2050. That is basically using similar settings to the default oc mode. I think with lots of effort I might squeeze it closer to 2075 but it artifacts quickly. Dissapointing but that stock oc isnt bad. I'm wondering if I should make sure hsf has good contact, I did notice slight crackling sounds (like plastic bending a little)when I installed it.

I'm not sure of the best way to go for you.....If you attempt to check good contact with gpu paste with the heat block and fans could it not void your warranty? To be honest I think it could.......The conclusion I have come up with is that overclocking the core will only be noticeable @ 4k when you need every last drop of fps to give smoother game play. I don't see the point @ 1080p or even 2k as the fps easily surpasses 60fps for smooth game play (on average). Although saying that I have noticed with everything maxed on FarCry 3 @ 1080p it does drop below 60fps the odd time but not by much, maybe 2-3fps. Is the gtx 1080 capable of 60fps and above @ 1080p? Not every time. I am sure that I was lucky as regards silicon lottery after reading countless other threads about the Gtx 1080. It does seem the odd one is capable of clocking like mine does but it seems to be rare. All in all I am pleased I upgraded from the Gtx 690 as it easily outperforms it. I was waiting until a gpu came out that made it worth upgrading and the Gtx 1080 is that card.

Unfortunately after about two months of use, my Gigabyte Xtreme is starting to exhibit some significant artifacting even at 65C and stock speeds (not even the Gigabyte OC Mode - that is even worse). On Eco mode it seems fine but I didn't buy an "Xtreme" card to run 100+ MHz under stock.

I was running it at +25 over OC mode on the GPU and +75 on the RAM for a long time...just recently it has started artifacting and crashing VR games even turned down to stock speeds.

Heaven benchmark reports it's running between 2050 and 2088 MHz on the GPU, 5120 MHz on the VRAM.

Tried reseating the card (no sag at all noticed - great build quality and backplate on this card) - no change. Tried rolling back to previous nVidia drivers - no change.

Might be time for an RMA. I've contacted Gigabyte support, they've been reasonably responsive in the past.

I could try pulling the HSF to see about reapplying thermal paste, but the temps are not high so I don't think it's that. Just seems to be generally unstable.

Might be the newer drivers.. if not yeah rma.

Hi again MavericK. I have known PSU's to be responsible for the problems you are having but it's extremely rare. One thing I would try before you RMA is to try another PSU. Do you have access to another computer to try the graphics card in? if the card is also giving the same problems in another computer then you know for a fact that the problem is a faulty graphics card. Believe it or not even a faulty Northbridge chipset on the motherboard can also give you the same problems and even memory but these are also very very rare. If you have a local computer shop, they may try the card for you in one of their setups free of charge, I myself have done this in the past. I can assure you that the driver won't be responsible especially as I also have the very latest driver installed and report no problems. The driver being responsible is even rarer than the other known issues that can cause your problem. I would say though that I am 98% certain that your graphics card is responsible/faulty.

Thanks for the helpful info. I have read similar things about the PSU. What I may do is pop back in a previous card with a higher power draw and see if I still get issues. Unfortunately I don't have another PSU to test with (should probably buy one), so I can't just swap it out. I may be able to try the card in a different machine entirely, though.

I am pretty sure at this point that it's the card as well. Still waiting to hear back from Gigabyte support.

Just commenting to say I got my new Gigabyte 1080 delivered today and it seems rock solid, even with a pretty decent overclock.

Does anybody here experience coil whine on giga xtreme? I have some buzzing sound (not from fans as it appears only during the load) which I can notice in the quiet time. Actually the heavier the game/the higher fps is - the more noticeable it gets. I'm debating whether I should RMA the card or not bother with it at all.

If it's disruptive enough, I would do an RMA. If you can live with it, it's probably not hurting the card so...up to you.
